Parents of Truant Students Miss Meeting

Wed Mar 16, 1:36 PM ET

 Strange News - AP

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Prosecutors summoned parents of repeatedly truant children to attend a meeting about the law concerning excessive absences, but 241 of the adults didn't show up.

Knox County District Attorney General Randy Nichols mailed letters about the Tuesday evening meeting to 582 parents, and about 41 percent were absent.

State law allows prosecutors to to hold parents accountable for their children's school absences. Knox County in February arrested 19 parents whose children had 10 or more unexcused absences from school. Parents found guilty can be punished by a year in jail.

Baboon crisis keeps children out of school

March 16 2005 at 05:44PM

Kampala - Bands of marauding baboons in eastern Uganda are forcing parents to keep their children at home to guard crops, causing rampant absenteeism in the region's primary schools, officials said on Wednesday.

More than 85 percent of children in Uganda's Busia district are staying home from school due to the menace caused by the baboons, which are attacking gardens and farms to feast on fruits and vegetables grown there.

"This has forced many parents to deploy their children to guard and scare away the animals instead of sending them to school," Busia district council chairperson Stephen Wanyama Oundo told reporters.

ASU Spokesman Reassigned After Statements Made About Police Taser Use

March 16th, 2005 @ 9:13am

by Associated Press

Arizona State University has reassigned a spokesman for statements he made about why campus police shocked football fans with Tasers after the Fiesta Bowl.

Campus police shocked up to 24 fans who tried to rush the field after the Utah-Pittsburgh game.

Jennings was quoted as saying police used Tasers because the school has a contract with the Cardinals to protect the field and so that fans would not be hurt in a mob scene.

Teaching Interrupted: Do Discipline Policies in Today's Public Schools Foster the Common Good?

Public Agenda, May 1, 2004

A new poll conducted by Public Agenda and commissioned by Common Good found that discipline in America's public schools is falling victim to "a culture of challenge and second guessing." Teachers told Public Agenda about a "tyranny of the few," armed with the possibility of a lawsuit, undermining their ability to maintain order in the classroom.

Among the most alarming results demonstrating how our lawsuit culture undermines school discipline:

Nearly 8 in 10 teachers (78%) said students are quick to remind them that they have rights or that their parents can sue.

Nearly half of teachers surveyed (49%) reported they have been accused of unfairly disciplining a student.

More than half of teachers (55%) said that districts backing down from assertive parents causes discipline problems in the nation's schools.

Inhalant Abuse Increasing Among U.S. Teens

Thu Mar 17,12:54 PM ET

 Health - Reuters

By Alan Elsner

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Over a million American teenagers intentionally inhale the vapors of common household products like hairspray, shoe polish and glue each year and the number is rising, government officials said on Thursday.

As drug use overall has gone down in this country, we have had an increase in inhalant use," Walters said.

Inhalants commonly sniffed, or "huffed," by children as young as eight include gasoline and lighter fluid, spray paints, cleaning fluids, paint thinners and other solvents, degreasers, correction fluids, hair sprays and odorizers.

St. Petersburg 5-year-old cuffed after school outburst

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A 5-year-old girl was arrested, cuffed and put in back of a police cruiser after an outburst at school where she threw books and boxes, kicked a teacher in the shins, smashed a candy dish, hit an assistant principal in the stomach and drew on the walls.

The students were counting jelly beans as part of a math exercise at Fairmount Park Elementary School when the little girl began acting silly. That's when her teacher took away her jelly beans, outraging the child.

Minutes later, the 40-pound girl was in the back of a police cruiser, under arrest for battery. Her hands were bound with plastic ties, her ankles in handcuffs.

"I don't want to go to jail," she said moments after her arrest Monday.

No charges were filed and the girl went home with her mother.

While police say their actions were proper, school officials were not pleased with the outcome.

"We never want to have 5-year-old children arrested," said Michael Bessette, the district's Area III superintendent.

The district's campus police should have been called to help and not local police, he said.

Bessette said campus police routinely deal with children and are trained to calm them in such situations.

Under the district's code of student conduct, students are to be suspended for 10 days and recommended for expulsion for unprovoked attacks, even if they don't result in serious injury. But district spokesman Ron Stone said that rule wouldn't apply to kindergartners.

"She's been appropriately disciplined under the circumstances," he said.

The girl's mother, Inda Akins, said she is consulting an attorney.

"She's never going back to that school," Akins said. "They set my baby up."

12-year-old boy orders hit on father.....

Mar 19, 2005

A 12-year-old Brazilian boy put out a hit on his father adding that the man's killing was solved after a teen hitman complained he had not received his agreed payoff for the slaying.

The hit took place last month in the metropolitan Fortaleza area of Ceara state in the northeast, but police said they had only solved the case now because the alleged 16-year-old assassin told his family he had killed a person, but had not been paid the agreed $US550 for the murder.

The young son confessed to police he had ordered the hit against his father, a 65-year-old pensioner, because his father beat him.

However, the authorities believe the boy was after his father's pension payments which they say he raided, among other things, to rent the pistol used by the alleged assassin.

Investigators believe the father had discovered his son was stealing his pension payments and spending the cash on cinema tickets and on food and clothes for his friends. Police said the beatings started after the father's discovery.

According to the teen trigger-puller, the mother of the 12-year-old had been present when the two youngsters negotiated the terms of the hit.

The 12-year-old remains free, due to his age, while the authorities continue to investigate the case.

By ERIKA MARTINEZ, LORENA MONGELLI and MURRAY WEISS

March 19, 2005 -- A heartless thug seething with "pure evil" and posing as a good Samaritan approached a blind 19-year-old college student on a Queens subway platform, offered to help her get home, then raped her inside a darkened elevator, law-enforcement sources said yesterday.

Cops said the unidentified teenager, who uses a red and white cane, got off the E train at Parsons Boulevard and Archer.

Sorry but I am a little more liberal with the death penalty than the rest of you. Some of these mofo's are too low to live. :reallymad:

well there you are then red..we can agree...in certain instances i must admit that i am leaning towards capital punishment myself.....although they`ll never have it again in nz.... ( The last person to be hanged in New Zealand was in 1957.... Walter James Bolton convicted of poisoning his wife with arsenic. He protested his innocence to the end. In 1961 the Crimes Act abolished capital punishment.) what that bastard did to that blind girl was horrifying....... :o:mad:

People that do things like that against the defenseless deserve whatever they get. You occasionally read that some strong 25 yr old male beats up a 80 yr old woman in her house and robs her. That's the kind of stuff I have less than no tolerance for. If he robs me give him 5 or 10 yrs. If he robs an 80 yr old widow woman and beats her up....give him life.

Tricking and raping a blind girl.....what a turd. I hope the mofo gets caught and while he is out on bail, gets run over by a cement truck. Then the girl will have the satisfaction of knowing he is gone forever.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
