Colorful beads lead to court

Student claims Schenectady school district cannot ban her red, white and blue necklace

By MICHELE MORGAN BOLTON, Staff writer

First published: Thursday, February 17, 2005

ALBANY -- A Mont Pleasant middle school student is taking her freedom-of-expression fight to federal court, claiming Schenectady school officials have no right to ban her from wearing a handmade red, white and blue necklace to class.

The beads, which Raven Furbert got as a string-it-yourself Christmas gift, symbolize love of country and respect for soldiers serving in Iraq, according to the lawsuit her mother, Katie Grzywna, filed in U.S. District Court in Albany.

I'm not sure how much better Texas is, if any. Everytime they do a survey of high school seniors it is amazing how many don't know that Mexico is the country that borders Texas on the south. That's just a damn shame.

Forum: Communism for kids

Any parent with a child in a public school has likely discovered our education system is little more than a means by which liberals indoctrinate children with socialist ideology.

I agree with the article. If you do too, Dude, then I must have missed something and will of course immediately re-read it.

Since communism is dead, one must blame the liberals  On a more serious note:

The whatever culture A new book says uncaring, punitive adults -- parents and professionals alike -- are responsible for an epidemic of checked-out, drug-taking middle-class teens

I'm glad my son is 22 and hasn't been a problem. I think that is a reflection on how well I beat him at an early age. He still remembers it and has a healthy respect for/fear of....ole' dad. Doctors say he may even be able to walk without crutches one day.

That and the fact that I told him I would take back the car and credit card.

oh really? so what's their reasoning for my cohort for the most part, having taken all the drugs we could get our hands on? dr spock's book (baby and child care, i believe it wsa called) was all the rage in the 50s, 60s and possibly the 70s. my own parents were extremely caring and attentive (too much so IMO). i haven't read the article but i want to and will ASAP.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Reuters) - A California high school teacher was arraigned on Monday at a Sacramento court accused of having sex with a student in a car as her two-year child was strapped into the back seat.

Margaret De Barraicua, 30, a teacher trainee, was charged with four counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, a 16-year-old student. The married woman was caught having sex in the late afternoon last week in what was apparently a consensual agreement, officials said.

"We received a call about a suspicious parked vehicle at a school here in Sacramento," said local police spokesman Justin Risley. "They got there and observed two people, windows-steamed-up type of thing."

Two boys arrested after SLO man's death

13-year-old to be charged with murder after attack on victim, 87, at his south street home

Laurie Phillips

The Tribune

When three San Luis Obispo police officers entered Gerald "Jerry" O'Malley's mobile home Monday night to find out why his Ford Explorer was abandoned, they discovered the 87-year-old dead in the living room.

His killer, they would suspect by the end of the night, was 13 years old. And the cause of the blunt head trauma, they now say, was a skateboard.

By 1 a.m. Tuesday near San Luis Obispo's Railroad Square, two other officers arrested the 13-year-old and a 12-year-old friend, the younger boy on suspicion of auto theft.

Braxton schools rocked by charges

Sixth-grade teacher accused of having sex with three students

By Dave Gustafson

Staff writer By Eric Eyre

Staff writer

Braxton County school employees and students were “shocked, dismayed and broken-hearted” after learning that a female middle school teacher stood accused of having sex with four students under age 16, the county’s school superintendent said Friday.

Toni Lynn Woods, 36, a sixth-grade teacher at Braxton County Middle School, was arrested Wednesday and charged with eight counts of third-degree sexual assault. Woods allegedly had sexual intercourse with three students four times and oral sex with one of those and another juvenile four times, according to a criminal complaint.

“We didn’t expect anything like this,” Braxton County Superintendent Carolyn Long said Friday. “I’ve never had to deal with a situation of this nature.”

Woods resigned from her job and surrendered her teaching certificate on Thursday.

Woods started work at the middle school last fall. She was an assistant coach for the school’s wrestling team. Her husband — a preacher — is head coach. Woods previously worked as a special education teacher at Flatwoods Elementary School, Long said.

A man who spoke anonymously to WSAZ-TV on Friday said his son was on the wrestling team. The man said his son told him that he was going to friend’s birthday party, but instead he went to a local motel with Woods, who allegedly bought him alcohol and had sex with him.

The alleged incidents happened between Jan. 1 and Feb. 26, according to a criminal complaint.

“At this point, the alleged incidents did not happen on school property or on school time or during a school event,” Long said.

Braxton Middle has offered extra counseling services to students, she said.

“We’ll do whatever we can to help all children at the school,” Long said. “We’re working very hard with the kids. We want everything to be well with them.”

But Long acknowledged that Woods’ arrest has rocked the community and the 700-student middle school.

“The bottom line is, we want to get back to normal as much as is humanly possible,” Long said. “It’s a wonderful little school. It shouldn’t be tarnished by one person’s actions.”

A preliminary hearing on Woods’ eight felony charges will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Braxton County Prosecutor Bill Martin said Friday.

Martin said his office would not release any information about the students’ ages, gender or what schools they attend to protect their identities.

“The parents are very concerned about their privacy,” he said. “I’m not going to give any kind of clues as to who they are.”

Woods filed another financial affidavit Friday that reflected not having her teaching job, Braxton County Magistrate Beth Smith said. Woods was then assigned a court-appointed attorney, Smith said. However, the lawyer’s name will not be released until they get paperwork on her charges, she said.

Smith said that Woods consented to State Police searching her Strange Creek home, so no search warrant was filed.

The story has already garnered national and international media attention. It has been picked up by news Web sites across the country plus Ireland, Great Britain, Scotland and South Africa.

Martin said people from Geraldo Rivera’s Fox News office and Inside Edition with Deborah Norville have called him for information.

A regular school board meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Braxton County Board of Education in Sutton. Personnel matters will be taken up at that time, Long said.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
