Children who can't cook ... can't sew ... can't save

JIM MCBETH

Critics say that the devaluation of home economics and a lack of parental guidance has produced youngsters ignorant of basic life skills - such as knowing to boil potatoes before mashing them

A NEW generation of children is growing up as "incompetents", unable to sew, care for their clothes, or even realise that potatoes are boiled before being mashed.

IPS police and Marion County child protection workers are investigating an incident involving two first-graders who officials said were caught trying to have sex Wednesday at an Eastside school.

District officials worried that the incident may have signaled that at least one of the 6-year-olds had been abused before. A child psychologist acknowledged that possibility but said the behavior simply could have been an attempt to copy something seen on a video or cable TV.

"One of them may be a victim," said Indianapolis Public Schools Superintendent Duncan Pat Pritchett. "We're waiting for the conclusion of the two investigations. At that age, that's learned behavior."

The names of the two children have not been made public. But the girl and boy, who were released to their parents, received five-day suspensions and could be booted from classes at School 69 for the rest of the year.

Speaker tells Palo Alto students that stripping can be lucrative

Thursday, January 13, 2005

(01-13) 16:55 PST SAN FRANCISCO (AP) --

School officials in Palo Alto are reconsidering their use of a popular speaker for an annual career day after he advised middle school students that they could earn a good living as strip dancers.

William Fried told eighth-graders at Jane Lathrop Stanford Middle School that stripping and exotic dancing could be lucrative career moves for girls, offering as much as $250,000 or more per year, depending on their bust size.

Student sent home for inappropriate shirt

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

LONGVIEW, Wash. -- An openly gay high school student was sent home to change after he wore a shirt that said "Too Gay To Function" during homecoming week.

Billy Zepeda, a senior at R.A. Long High School, decorated the lime green shirt with marker-drawn rainbows and wrote the phrase from the teen movie "Mean Girls" on the front. He wore it Thursday during the school's make-your-own-shirt day. A teacher told him the shirt was inappropriate and offensive to homosexuals, said Zepeda, 17.

BEST DAYS OF THEIR LIVES

Pupils at a comprehensive school are considering themselves the luckiest 12-year-olds in Britain after all homework was scrapped for them.

The head called homework a "dinosaur" and insists the move will encourage students to "love learning for its own sake". Dr Patrick Hazlewood told the Daily Telegraph he thinks pupils should "manage their own learning".

Friday, January 21, 2005

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Three 11-year-old boys and a 10-year-old girl tried to hijack their school bus near Punxsutawney this morning.

Student Sues to End Summer Homework in Wisconsin, Claims Unfair Workload After Vacation Spoiled

MILWAUKEE Jan 21, 2005 — A student whose vacation plans were spoiled has sued to end summer homework in Wisconsin, claiming it creates an unfair workload and unnecessary stress.

Peer Larson, 17, had lined up a dream camp counselor job last June, but honors pre-calculus homework turned his summer into a headache.

"It didn't completely ruin my summer, but it did give me a lot of undue stress both at home and at work," the high school junior said Thursday. "I just didn't have the energy or the time for it."

Children Charged With Felonies Over Violent Drawings

POSTED: 7:00 am EST January 26, 2005

OCALA, Fla. -- Two boys, ages 9 and 10, were charged with felonies and taken away from school in handcuffs, accused of making violent drawings of stick figures.

The boys were arrested Monday on charges of making a written threat to kill or harm another person, a second-degree felony. The special education students used pencil and red crayon to draw primitive stick figure scenes on scrap paper that showed a 10-year-old classmate being stabbed and hung, police said.

The boy depicted in the drawings told his teacher, who took the sketches and contacted the school dean, Marty Clifford. Clifford called police, who arrested the boys after consulting with the State Attorney.

Baby fined for littering

By GUY PATRICK

A BABY boy landed his dad with a £50 litter fine — for throwing an empty can out of his pram. Elliot Nightingale became the latest victim of Britain’s daft fines culture at just 16-MONTHS-OLD.

He playfully tossed the Pepsi Max can into a bush after 21-year-old dad Lee put it in his pram. But it was spotted by a litter enforcement officer who stung the jobless labourer with the on-the-spot penalty.

Florida Teacher Accused Of Biting Student

January 31, 2005

PERRY, Fla. -- It was a biting fight between a Taylor County teacher and her special education student. Now the state attorney's office has to decide who to charge. Natalie Whalen, 58, is accused of biting one of her special education students. The fight began when Whalen confiscated an unauthorized CD player from the student.

Lt. Martin Towles said the student apparently took the music player from the teacher's desk without permission. Whalen tried stopping the student but ended up getting bit on the arm.

Towles said bite marks were found on the child's back. He adds that Whalen didn't admit to intentionally biting the student. Whalen, who uses a wheelchair, is suspended with pay until further investigation.

Here's an interesting twist that happened to a would-be creep. Even though I support academic freedom, and the student's right to publish his views, and disagree with the school that expelled him, I disagree with the student's philosophy...

LeMoyne expels man over paper

By Brian Hecht

Published: 1/25/2005

While students are guaranteed the freedom of speech, LeMoyne College's recent actions against a student have raised questions of whether or not academic papers are the place to exercise this right.

LeMoyne College expelled Scott McConnell, a student from its Masters of Education program, for writing a paper in which he advocated the use of corporal punishment in schools, he said.

The paper, written for a class on classroom management, originally earned McConnell an A-. However, when he attempted to enroll in classes for the spring semester, he found he couldn't.

Study finds abstinence programs haven't influenced TX teens

By The Associated Press

(01/31/05 - DALLAS, TX) — Abstinence-only programs like those promoted by the Bush administration don't seem to be working on teenagers in the president's home state, according to a state-sponsored study by Texas A&M University researchers.

The ongoing study, the first evaluation of the abstinence programs across the state, found that students in almost all high school grades were more sexually active after undergoing abstinence education.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
