The Texas House of Representatives passed a bill banning homosexuals, bisexuals and transsexuals from being foster parents.

If the bill gains approval from the Texas Senate, the state will be allowed to investigate the backgrounds of current foster parents and remove children living in non-heterosexual households. All future foster parents will be required to disclose their sexual preference on an application form, a legislative aide said.

T-Shirt Ban Causes Stir At Panhandle School

BAKER, Fla. -- Two seniors at this rural Florida Panhandle community's only public school have been suspended and others were punished after they violated their principal's ban on T-shirts that read "Kiss Our Class Good-bye" or "Holy Ship, we're graduating."

"There's an obvious suggestion that many people find offensive," Principal Tom Shipp said. "I guess I might be old-fashioned, but I believe values are important."

Sarcasm lands breeder in dog box

A snarky remark made after a dog show has turned into a cat fight that has gone all the way to the High Court.

She apparently told her own dog: "Come along, see if you can move your back legs like that and slip your patellas (kneecaps) like that and win." In the notoriously cut-throat world of dog shows – highlighted in the spoof movie Best in Show – the judge took offence.

ATLANTA An 88-year-old Georgia woman isn't taking this one lying down.

She's filed suit against Orkin after allegedly being pinned down by an exterminator after she questioned the amount of the bill.

Patience Von Suttka claims Antonio Battle came to her home last year, and got out of control when she challenged the higher-than-usual fee for pest control. The woman claims Battle grabbed her walker, threw it across the room and then jumped on her.

She says he shoved a pesticide nozzle into her throat and sprayed it. Battle was fired just hours later.

2 Journos Fired for Drinking With Subjects of Beer-Pong Story

NEW YORK When reporter Craig McCool and photographer Mairin Chapman of The Kalamazoo (Mich.) Gazette went to a local party to research a series on drinking among young adults, they saw nothing wrong with partaking of the libations themselves.

But editors did. The result: The two were dismissed, and the paper ran an editor's note this weekend explaining the incident.

"Their conduct is unacceptable and violates the standards that we uphold every day as journalists," Editor Rebecca Pierce said in the note, published Saturday. "We don't condone it and we can't ignore it."

Elgin Police May Have Thought Teen's 911 Call Was A Prank

Was Kidnapped Teen's 911 Call Thought To Be A Prank?

ELGIN (CBS 2) The Elgin Police Department is investigating a call made by a kidnapped teen who was later found brutally murdered. David Steeves dialed 911 from inside the trunk of a car seconds after his abduction, but as CBS 2's Kristyn Hartman reports, there's now speculation that operators thought the call was a prank.

But by that time 911 had Steeves’ name and his general location. There was a question, though, about the validity of the call. A recorded voice says, "Call taker thinks it could be a prank. But isn't definite on it.”

Activity didn't end there. The recording shows that in less than a minute Elgin officers were heading toward the area of South Street. But they didn't find anything. However, the next morning a South Street resident discovered a gym shoe and blood in a driveway.

An investigation Steeves' family called "tireless" led to the Rockford location of the Toyota Steeves placed the call from and to the ultimate arrest of two suspects.

Florida Governor Signs Deadly Force Law

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Reuters) - Florida Gov. Jeb Bush signed a new anti-crime law on Tuesday that allows people to kill in self-defense without first trying to flee.

Supporters say the law is a logical extension of common law that allows homeowners who fear for their lives to use deadly force to defend themselves from an intruder in their homes.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
