A first grader carried 40 bags of crack to school and began handing them out, apparently mistaking them for candy. His concerned family had hid crack in his school bag to be careful. <_>

Naked teens on web a 'disturbing trend'

WINNIPEG -- Manitoba police and justice officials are warning parents of a "disturbing trend" in which young teens are posing nude in front of webcams and sending the pictures out on the Internet. "I'm very concerned parents and families are losing control," Justice Minister Gord Mackintosh said yesterday, calling webcams a "peephole for the world into a child's bedroom."

Lianna McDonald, executive director of Child Find Manitoba, said it's becoming a more common practice for teens, especially girls.

McDonald said cybertip.ca, Canada's national Internet pervert snitch line, has received 10 such complaints in the past few months alone. The majority of cases have involved girls between the ages of 13 and 15.

Nearly half of the country's secondary school teachers have suffered mental health problems due to worsening pupil behaviour, a survey has revealed.

The research, by the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, on 300 secondary school teachers, showed that abuse at the hands of pupils had left 46 per cent taking antidepressants or facing long lay-offs from school through stress.

Trooper Suspended for 'Too Bad' 911 Remark

By Associated Press

March 22, 2005, 1:33 PM EST

LISBON, Conn. -- A state trooper was suspended for 15 days without pay after he was recorded on a 911 tape saying "too bad" to a caller seeking help for a man injured in a motorcycle accident.

State police said the dismissive answer by Trooper Robert Peasley did not affect the response time to the accident involving Justin Sawyer, 21, who died of a severe head injury a week after the crash last August. Peasley was suspended on Monday.

Iowa HS Wrestler Hazing Update: Seven Charged With Misdemeanor Assault for Applying Famous "Wieners to the Face" Hold on Teammates - The latest HS hazing incident had gotten a little more serious with seven members of the AHST High School wrestling team (including one former member) being charged with misdemeanor assault for "forcibly restraining" seven freshman wrestlers on eight different occasions, and each time "one individual would take down his pants and place his bare genitals against the face and head of the alleged victims." Some of the older wrestlers will also face hazing charges, also a misdemeanor in Iowa. Details. (At right, a picture of the AHST Wrestling Team in happier times. Fla. Teen Who Killed Friend in Fight Gets 45 Years

Published: Mar 25, 2005

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) - A 15-year-old girl was sentenced to 45 years in state prison Thursday for slitting the throat of a longtime friend in a fight over fireworks.

Christine Rogers, who was 13 when she was arrested in the July 2003 death Ashley Harvey, was tried as an adult and was convicted in February of second-degree murder.

She had faced life in prison but Circuit Judge Nick Geeker said he took her age into account in deciding on 45 years.

"This is not an easy case," he said. "The court wants to temper justice with mercy."

Rogers showed little reaction after hearing the sentence, which allows her to spend the rest of her youth with other young-adult offenders.

Witnesses testified that Rogers chased the 15-year-old Harvey with a butcher knife because she believed she was shooting fireworks at one of Rogers' younger sisters. The victim bled to death after being stabbed in the neck.

45 years. I'd get less here for 'doing in' the Prime Minister.

Not that I would mind you. I'll just continue crushing his head from afar.

From a pure medical standpoint that would have ironically choked her to death. There is reason she was on a TUBE.

Pioneer' With Weapons and Bibles Arrested

Fri Mar 25, 5:29 PM ET

By JIM SUHR, Associated Press Writer

ST. LOUIS - Two sheriff's deputies checking on a motorist stopped along Interstate 70 in the predawn darkness were puzzled at first by what they found — a driver dressed like an old-time pioneer, saying he was headed for South Dakota with Bibles and "supplies" for American Indian children.

It's only after the West Virginia man got mouthy and smelled of marijuana, according to police, did the deputies uncover a staggering arsenal of firepower inside the sport utility vehicle, including loaded pistols and an assault rifle with a 30-round clip and a bullet in the chamber.

Warrant returns to haunt

Saturday, March 26, 2005

By MIKE WIGGINS

The Daily Sentinel

Maria Galante knew something was awry when the officers who knocked on her front door called her by a last name she hasn’t used in 20 years.

It turned out to be just the beginning.

The 58-year-old woman was taken from her Aztec, N.M., home to jail, where she stayed for more than a week before she was shackled by her wrists and ankles, driven in a van 6½ hours through the snow to Grand Junction and booked into the Mesa County Jail on Thursday — all for allegedly violating her probation on a 24-year-old attempted theft case.

Mesa County court officials on Friday appeared just as surprised about Galante’s case as she was. They had trouble finding her case file — it’s not on the courts’ computers because it’s so old — and couldn’t explain to Galante what she was accused of doing to violate her probation.

Galante had no idea that prosecutors filed a probation violation complaint against her in January 1985 until Mesa County Judge Art Smith informed her about it on Friday. She was arrested on that alleged violation on March 15 and extradited to Mesa County on Thursday.

Galante posted a $3,000 bond Thursday night and was told to appear in court Friday afternoon, but nobody at the Mesa County Justice Center had any record of her appearance. Her name didn’t appear on any court docket, and prosecutors didn’t know anything about her case. Smith responded, “Holy smokes!” when Deputy District Attorney Andrew Lemke informed him Galante was appearing in court on the case. After looking at her case file, the judge noted that he was Galante’s prosecutor.

“I have taken care of my fines, and I was told I was good to go,” Galante told Smith. “I don’t understand why this has come up (24) years later.”

Galante attempted to meet with a prosecutor after her court appearance but was unsuccessful.

Pennsylvania Teen High School Hideaway Discovered

(Bentleyville, Pa. -AP, March 25, 2005) — School officials have discovered a secret hideaway at Bentworth High School, in the small coal-patch town of Bentleyville, Pennsylvania.

The secret room was behind a hallway hatch used to access pipes. Inside, officials found marijuana roaches, candles, and a disposable camera with pictures of a boy bound with duct tape and a girl flashing her breasts.

Police say no crimes were committed but at least ten students have been disciplined. However, some parents think officials aren't taking the secret hideaway seriously enough.

Kay Keen, a former PTA vice president, says "those sorts of things shouldn't be happening in a school."

Student defecates in RA's dorm room

By Rachel Streitfeld and Helen Rhee

Published: Friday, March 25, 2005

Lee 3 resident advisors walked in on a nasty surprise last Friday night: someone had broken into and vandalized their rooms, reportedly defecating in at least one RA's room.

Police are offering $500 for any information regarding the incident.

"The vandalism was out of the bounds of any sense of decency," said Washington University Police Chief Don Strom. "It was disgusting. The behavior was totally unacceptable and inconsistent with behavior expected of the Washington University community."

Student Life agreed not to print the names of the Lee 3 RAs due to the sensitive nature of the situation. The RAs asked Lee 3 residents not to speak to reporters. The Residential College Director for Lee, Urisonya Roberson, also declined to be interviewed.

Strom alluded to past conflicts between the RAs and students on Lee 3 as a possible motive for the crimes.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
