Texas Marine Told He's No Resident, Must Pay Higher Tuition

AUSTIN, Texas — A decorated Marine (search) enrolling in college was shocked to learn his Texas driver's license, car registration and bank records weren't enough to get the lower resident tuition rates.

Carl Basham (search) said officials at Austin Community College recently told him that he lost his Texas resident's status because of the years he spent out of state on two tours of duty in Iraq.

Not having the in-state designation would mean paying around $2600 a semester in tuition, instead of about $500.

The school's response surprised the 27-year-old Beeville native, who is registered to vote in Travis County, has a Texas driver's license and does his banking in Austin

Disabled 7-year-old ejected from theater

Town of Wallkill – If you're a 7-year-old kid with cerebral palsy and autism, you have to take your laughs anywhere you can get them.

Just don't have too much fun at the local movie theater, or you might get thrown out.

That's what happened to young Anthony Pratti this week. To say his parents are upset about it would be an understatement.

Anthony, who uses a wheelchair, was with his parents, his sister and his grandmother at the Loews Cineplex theaters in the Galleria at Crystal Run Sunday, watching a 1:15 p.m. matinee of the G-rated film "March of the Penguins."

Officers won't face charges in Snelgrove death

None of the Boston police officers involved in the fatal shooting last fall of 21-year-old Victoria Snelgrove will face criminal charges, prosecutors announced yesterday.

While he described their actions as careless and negligent, Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said the officers who fired pepper pellets into crowds celebrating the Red Sox's pennant victory did not intend to hurt anyone but were trying to protect the public and themselves.

School Expels Girl for Having Gay Parents

ONTARIO, Calif.

A 14-year-old student was expelled from a Christian school because her parents are lesbians, the school's superintendent said in a letter.

Shay Clark was expelled from Ontario Christian School on Thursday.

"Your family does not meet the policies of admission," Superintendent Leonard Stob wrote to Tina Clark, the girl's biological mother.

Stob wrote that school policy requires that at least one parent may not engage in practices "immoral or inconsistent with a positive Christian life style, such as cohabitating without marriage or in a homosexual relationship," The Los Angeles Times reported in Friday's edition.

Stob could not be reached for comment by the newspaper. Shay and her parents said they won't fight the ruling.

School administrators learned of the parents' relationship this week after Shay was reprimanded for talking to the crowd during a football game, Tina Clark said.

Oswego City Cell Phones Recalled

In an effort to cut down on cell phone abuse, all Oswego City employees were ordered to turn in their cell phones on Monday afternoon.

It's the new city administration's reaction to charges against former Mayor John Gosek, accused of soliciting sex from underaged girls on his city phone. The move is rubbing some people the wrong way.  But, others say they have no problem with acting Mayor Bill Dunsmoor order.

It's caught up on the count now and I threw in comparisons per 100K.

If you can't live in an unmentioned state, your best bets are New Jersey, North Carolina and Minnesota. [in that order] *two blue states - one red*

Your worst bets are Florida and Wyoming. *cough - red states*

Keeping in mind that a lot of the unmentioned states were so-called red states.

what is the state by state count and how does the 100k thingy affect it?

You have to expect that California is going to get more stories like this than say Alaska just based on population.

I tried to find out comparitively how many stories were turning out of places based on population. e.g. Yeah Florida has a shit load, but wouldn't it be worse if it was a State of one million?

So if a state of 5 million gets five and a state of one million gets one, the state with 5 million isn't necessarily...well, crazier.

True, but each state makes their own laws, and by and large, the southern states are more conservative, so it stands that they will get a large number of offensive posts. In fact, I would bet that Florida and Texas stand out in this regard.

What happened to the old state count vote?

It's still there

Alaska – 1 = 626,932 = 1 in 6

California & New York both at 16

Texas at 23

Florida at 32

As if for every six posts in this thread, every 1 out of em, is from Alaska?

Although we could not possibly get all such stories in one thread these sorts of stories tend to get fairly wide publicity.

As such, we could pretend to have a fair representation of such stories here. The 1 in 6 has less to do with the thread as it has to do with the total population of whatever state divided by 100K, then again by the number of stories about said state that were collected.

At best it offers an idea of how likely it is to have a strange story come out of a said state if they were of equal population.

It would make no sense to simply say that less weird stuff happens in The District of Columbia than in Florida when Florida has so many more times the people.

I don't know man. It makes sense to me.

Texas Judge Orders Teen Barred From Sex

September 29,2005 | SHERMAN, Texas -- A state district judge has ordered a 17-year-old drug offender barred from sex as a condition of her probation. Judge Lauri Blake made the ruling that bars the girl from having sex as long as she is living with her parents and attending school.

It is one of several unorthodox rulings Blake has imposed since she was elected 10 months ago in the 336th District Court covering Fannin and Grayson counties. She has also prohibited tattoos, body piercings, earrings and clothing "associated with the drug culture" for those on probation. Blake also enforces rules on the lawyers in her courtroom including a ban on sleeveless shirts and cleavage.

Boy Risks Suspension By Attempting to Join Girl's HS Bowling Team

November 8, 2005 - A battle is ongoing over a boy who wants to join a girls bowling team at a northwest suburban high school. Officials at Schaumburg High School have told the senior he cannot be on the team because of Illinois High School Association rules. The school does not have a boys bowling team. The student's parents say they are ready to file a lawsuit.

Seventeen-year-old Paul Rofus, a senior at Schaumburg High School, knew he risked being suspended if he attempted to show up at the bowling tryouts Tuesday for the female bowling team at Hoffman Lanes. He says although he was warned by the school's athletic director that he would be suspended, he decided to proceed with his fight.

"He also said if I show up at the bowling alley again like I did the other day or anybody approaches him or look at him the wrong way, he will suspend me," said Rofus.

Tennessee high school newspaper seized

OAK RIDGE, Tennessee (AP) -- Copies of a high school's student newspaper were seized by administrators because the edition contained stories about birth control and tattoos, stirring a First Amendment debate.

Administrators at Oak Ridge High School went into teachers' classrooms, desks and mailboxes to retrieve all 1,800 copies of the newspaper Tuesday, said teacher Wanda Grooms, who advises the staff, and Brittany Thomas, the student editor.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
