me too especially after reading things like this from today's NYTimes:

'In one of the several pieces of startling video exhibited for the first time in Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11," we catch a candid glimpse of President Bush some...minutes before he makes his own prime-time TV address to take the nation to war in Iraq. He is sitting at his desk in the Oval Office. A makeup woman is doing his face. And Mr. Bush is having a high old time. He darts his eyes about and grins, as if he were playing a peek-a-boo game with someone just off-camera. He could be a teenager goofing with his buds to relieve the passing tedium of a haircut.

"In your wildest dreams you couldn't imagine Franklin Roosevelt behaving this way 30 seconds before declaring war, with grave decisions and their consequences at stake...'

and this: '...Instead of recycling images of the planes hitting the World Trade Center on 9/11 once again, Mr. Moore can revel in extended new close-ups of the president continuing to read "My Pet Goat" to elementary school students in Florida for nearly seven long minutes after learning of the attack. Just when Abu Ghraib and the savage beheading of Nicholas Berg make us think we've seen it all, here is yet another major escalation in the nation-jolting images that have become the battleground for the war about the war....'

and 'Wasn't it just weeks ago that we were debating whether we should see the coffins of the American dead and whether Ted Koppel should read their names on "Nightline"? In "Fahrenheit 9/11," we see the actual dying, of American troops and Iraqi civilians alike, with all the ripped flesh and spilled guts that the violence of war entails. (If Steven Spielberg can simulate World War II carnage in "Saving Private Ryan," it's hard to argue that Mr. Moore should shy away from the reality in a present-day war.)'

and 'We also see some of the 4,000-plus American casualties: those troops hidden away in clinics at Walter Reed and at Blanchfield Army Community Hospital in Fort Campbell, Ky., where they try to cope with nerve damage and multiple severed limbs. They are not silent. They talk about their pain and their morphine, and they talk about betrayal. "I was a Republican for quite a few years," one soldier says with an almost innocent air of bafflement, "and for some reason they conduct business in a very dishonest way."

that's just from the first page; the rest of the article by Frank Rich is here.

I believe his film won top honor because French public opinion of the U.S. goverment, on average, is negative, not because Moore speaks the truth.

Moore is a reverse crack-pot. A polar opposite of the extreme conservative, so to speak.

Let's not lie to ourselves here, the reasoning seems very clear.

Given the crap that comes out of the White House, what makes anyone think that Moore is not too far of the mark? I think I will reserve judgment until I see the film - he may be a muckraker, but he's far more entertaining than DICK Cheney and crew.

Yep, it's no suprise that France of all countries would have a negative opinion of the US government

the Cannes awards are decided by different actors, directors, producers etc from around the world. One of them was Quentin Tarantino. The French public has nothing to do with it.

After all, he got a grammy award too. Those awards are American

http://www.mooreexposed.com/ Found this site on slashdot and i think its a good site and should be seen to be able to put this bozo into prespective rather than taking everything he says at face value.

I wont argue that its entertainment but its fiction or may as well be by butchering comments and creative editing being presented as facts in a documentary when its more his political commetary.

those sites say that he is a multimillionaire who lives in a huge apartment but what the hell is wrong with that? He makes movies and books and makes money from that. Is that so wrong?

I really don't care what those sites say.

I saw some parts from the new movie and there wasn't any lies in it. He pointed out stuff that the big newspapers like the Washington Post said before.

If some people don't want to believe some things he says then don't watch the movie or read his books

Agreed. But I have also heard he doesnt treat his employees well - that makes him a hypocrite personally. Nonetheless, I will still see his movies...despite his hyperbole, he still manages to bring out a lot of uncomfortable truths

Weinsteins buy 'Fahrenheit 9/11' rights

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Miramax founders Bob and Harvey Weinstein have obtained the rights to Michael Moore's new movie, "Fahrenheit 9/11," according to the Walt Disney Co., which had held the authorization but had declined to show the controversial film.

The brothers Weinstein officially acquired the rights through the Fellowship Adventure Group, which Disney said in a press release (DIS: news, chart, profile) is a special-purpose company. The Weinsteins bought the rights independently from the Miramax Film Corp., a Disney subsidiary, and have paid Miramax for all costs of the film so far.

"Fahrenheit 9/11," which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival last week, is said to feature a scathing critique of the Bush administration's policy in Iraq. The movie's overt political content made Disney uncomfortable, though the company staunchly denied it was censoring Moore.

Disney's shares dropped 24 cents to $23.47.

Yeah i cant wait for someone to post the truth behind this one. The only "debate" which i think the whole belief behind "debate" is flawed for various reasons, anyways the only thing that this will accomplish is just dragging up the same shit that went on after the last election, i dont expect anything new to come out of it and really i think we all have better things to do than to relive the 2000 election.

Film Industry Gives Controversial Iraq Film Ovation

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (Reuters) - Director Michael Moore's controversial anti-Iraq war film "Fahrenheit 9/11" won a standing ovation on Tuesday night from an audience of film industry professionals attending its West Coast debut at Academy Award headquarters.

After an audience of more than 600 people in the theater of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences cheered, whistled and laughed their way through the two-hour film, they jumped to their feet to give Moore a standing ovation as he took the stage.

Clearly buoyed by the reception, Moore, whose film is scathingly critical and mocking of President Bush, declared: "There has been a shift in this country. ... The average American is finally beginning to figure it out. We were duped (into invading Iraq)."

"I hope this country will be back in our hands in a short period of time," he added.

Republicans have denounced the film as unfair.

"Fahrenheit 9/11," with its strong attack on a U.S. president who is highly unpopular in Europe, won the top prize at the recent Cannes Film Festival, but it was refused distribution by the Walt Disney Co., whose Miramax film unit made the movie.

Disney chief Michael Eisner said the company did not want to distribute a highly partisan film in the middle of a presidential election year. He sold the rights to the film back to Miramax heads Bob and Harvey Weinstein, who formed a consortium to distribute the film and have it in theaters on June 25.

The dispute led to a spate of stories of bad blood between the embattled Eisner and the Weinsteins, including a recent one in The New York Times that speculated that Eisner was seeking a buyer for the prestigious Miramax unit.

Weinstein alluded to that controversy when he introduced the film and joked that he and his brother were taking out a classified ad saying: "Two executives looking for company to run. Resumes on request." He added, "If any of you know anything, we will be outside waiting."

Moore won an Academy Award for his 2002 documentary, "Bowling for Columbine," about the Columbine High School massacre in Colorado and the ease with which one can buy a gun in the United States.

In his remarks on Tuesday, Moore predicted "Fahrenheit 9/11" will do three times as well as his Columbine movie, which earned a record amount for a documentary film, $21.5 million.

Moore told Reuters afterward that "Fahrenheit" would open in between 500 and 1,000 theaters on June 25, an amazingly high number for a documentary.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
