  1. A new season of Love & Hip Hop Atlanta is on the way and it's suiting up to be an intense one for Alexis Sky. The reality star returns to Love & Hip Hop and this time, her storyline will center on her life experiences before fame. Alexis's relationships have often taken center stage as she's openly talked about her romances with Fetty Wap or Trouble, but now she's hoping that people won't be so judgemental if they are aware of her history. Aaron J. Thornton / Stringer / Getty Images Alexis Skyy shared a preview of the upcoming season of Love & Hip Hop Atlanta on Instagram where she talked about her harrowing experiences. "I was just basically sold to whoever, highest bidder," she said. "I had to forcefully do it or he would say he was gonna kill me. I didn't want to die." In the caption, Alexis wrote a lengthy message where she gave more details about what she reportedly endured. "Everyday I’m attacked, judged & accused of lying... all because, I’ve never spoke on my story before, but what nobody knows is, I still to this day haven’t told my mom, my grandmother or none of my immediate family!!!" she penned, adding that she's been afraid to speak out. "I was only 15 years old when I was kidnapped & forced into human trafficking by a guy 20 years older than me!! Every single day.. for 2 months... he would beat on me, threaten to kill me, my family & etc!!! Multiple times he held a loaded gun to my face, abused & raped me!! Also forcing me to have sexual intercourse who would pay!!! It’s so much shyt I’ve been thru as a young girl that nobody knows!!" She also shared that this will be the first time she's ever spoken about this but decided to come forward because "I gotta be a role model to these young girls!!" 2. Not long after announcing that he and his wife Crystal Smith planned to divorce, Ne-Yo stepped back into the music scene with a brand new single "Pinky Ring" featuring O.T. Genasis. The superproducer-singer-songwriter and his ex have been cordial in the media and during his visit to Pull Up with Joe Budden, Ne-Yo expounded on his personal life. Dimitrios Kambouris / Staff / Getty Images "'Pinky Ring' is a song about taking lemons and turning them into lemonade," the singer said. "It is about a situation that anybody can use as an excuse to be down and feel a way, but instead, taking it and letting it be a positive thing. Not allowing it to bring you down." Joe didn't seem too satisfied with the answer and wanted to know what Ne-Yo did that led to the breakup with his wife. “Without incriminating myself, without incriminating her and without putting any negative connotation on this... I will say that neither one of us was exactly who we needed to be in order for this to last, and that’s why it didn’t. Bottom line,” Ne-Yo said. “That's what it was. I own mine, she owns hers, and the craziest thing is there’s no beef, there’s no animosity, there’s no love lost because we both understand that.” Budden wasn't convinced that there's no beef between Ne-Yo and Crystal and called the singer "oblivious to what's going on." Ney-Yo disagreed. Budden later talked about his struggle with getting his engagement ring back from his ex-fiancé Cyn Santana and was surprised to hear that Crystal gave her wedding ring to Ne-Yo without a problem. Budden revealed he had to legally wait for the courts to rule on the matter. According to Ne-Yo, Crystal isn't the type of person who would hold onto something in order to get back at him or make things difficult. “She’s never been petty like that,” Ne-Yo added. “She’s never been money petty like that. That’s not her.” Watch Ne-Yo and Joe Budden chop it up on Pull Up below. View the full article
  3. Nike has been working on auto-lacing sneakers for a very long time now. It all started with the basketball-oriented Hyper Adapt which eventually became the Adapt BB. Recently, the Huarache got its own auto-lacing model and moving forward, it looks like the Air Max will be getting the self-lacing treatment. According to Yankee Kicks on Instagram, the model is being dubbed the Nike Adapt LE 01 and features a massive chunky midsole with Air Max technology embedded inside of it. Based on the look of the midsole, it even feels like Nike is trying to replicate the Air Max 90, except with a much bigger platform and rejuvenated silhouette. The first colorway is a mixture of grey and orange. As it stands, there is no timetable for when this shoe will actually be released. Nike has yet to issue a statement on this sneaker and the images above are the first sightings of this model. It seems like Nike has plans to add to its auto-lacing efforts and this Air Max shoe could be a great jumping-off point. Stay tuned for updates on this sneaker as we will be sure to bring them to you. In the meantime, let us know what you think, in the comments below. View the full article
  4. A simple tweet from Young M.A about R&B kicked up some dust. "Music don’t feel the same because we barely have R&B," the rapper tweeted last month. "R&B brung that balance to music.. now everything is leanin one way smh so it gets played out quick! We need R&B for the balance no kap!" As the tweet went viral, this generation's R&B artists came forward to defend the genre and claimed that if someone thinks R&B is lacking, then they just aren't searching hard enough. Arturo Holmes / Stringer / Getty Images Young M.A talked about her recent controversy during a visit to State of the Culture and revealed that people took what she was saying the wrong way. "It was just a spontaneous tweet," she said. "I didn't even know how crazy it was gon' get. It was just something I was feeling at the moment 'cause I am a very huge fan of R&B. Most of my playlist is R&B and I was just listening to music in the house and this idea just sprung in my head so I went to Twitter to kinda express that." The rapper explained that when she checks out playlists, R&B doesn't seem to have a stronghold in today's music culture the way it has in the past. Young M.A also clarified that she never said "R&B is dead" but adds "we don't hear it as often on front street as we would years prior." She added that she knows nowadays you have to "search for it" but that fact proves her point. "I do search for R&B and that's the problem, why I gotta go search for it?" the rapper asked. "Why ain't it in our faces as much as it used to be?" Young M.A listens to both old and new R&B and recognizes that the vibe is different, but she questions what's keeping the genre from taking over the airwaves like it did decades ago. 6. Last month, a Los Angeles judge dismissed an open lawsuit against the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige and her ex-husband Kendu Isaacs after the ex-couple and the opposing party failed to appear in court to determine a settlement. Back in Sept. 2018, the "Only Love" singer and her ex were sued by Golden Venus LLC for breach of contract for allegedly not paying nearly $60,000 in back rent, damaging their Beverly Hills mansion, and removing pre-installed audio-visual equipment that supposedly came with the house, according to court documents obtained by Bossip. Craig Barritt/Getty Images The landlord company claims that Blige and Isaacs caused $16,000 in damage to the property as well. However, Blige and her legal team refuted the company's statement, revealing that she and Golden Venus agreed to cancel her current agreement and paid the business a lump sum that was less than her original contract to make sure that she was in good standing prior to vacating the property. Blige and her legal counsel also stated that Golden Venus would be "unjustly enriched" if she was forced to pay any more money than she already has and accuses the company of "unlawful or improper conduct" for the alleged damage and missing property from the mansion, but fails to state her reasoning. Fortunately, it appears that the conflict has been settled out of court as the case was dismissed. However, Golden Venus LLC does have the power to open up a new lawsuit against the multi-platinum singer/songwriter and her ex-husband/manager, Kendu Isaacs, if they choose to. Since filing for divorce from her husband in 2016, Mary J. Blige has had one of the most successful music career resurgences in recent memory. Diddy is currently executive producing a documentary the 49-year-old songstress and she currently has a major role in the Power Book II, Power spin-off series alongside Method Man. Check out Mary J. Blige's short cameo in the upcoming Power Book II television series in the video provided below. View the full article
  7. After Gayle King brought up Kobe Bryant's sexual assault case from the 1990s in an interview with WNBA icon Lisa Leslie, the backlash was swift. It was only weeks after the world learned of the tragic deaths of the Los Angeles Lakers star, his daughter Gianna, and seven of their friends, so many believed Gayle's probing about the scandal was in poor taste. What followed was a tsunami of criticism, including a viral video of Snoop Dogg unleashing his anger. The rapper would later apologize for his comments and explained his thoughts behind his scathing words on Red Table Talk. Oprah Winfrey’s "2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus Tour" had its final stop in Denver, Colorado over the weekend. Gayle King was the featured guest of the sold-out discussion and the two best friends talked about Gayle's recent controversy. "The intention certainly didn't align with the impact and the fallout from that, but what got to me what the vitriol and the vulgarity that was just unleashed at me in ways that I couldn't even understand where that was coming from," Gayle said. She doesn't mind if people disagree with her methods or a story she's covering but insists the hateful words she experienced weren't acceptable. “I have moved on," she added. "Is there a scab? Yeah. But I have moved on. I put on my game face and my big girl pants, because I never lost sight of who I was, what I believe I am, and my intention. I’ve never lost sight of that. But it certainly was a learning curve, and it was very painful. I think sometimes you have to go through that. That makes you question things in life." 8. This past weekend, all of us celebrated the incredible women around us for International Women's Day. The public and celebrities alike made it a point to show our support for the women that tend to us, support us, and move the world in the right direction. Many people took to social media to publicly share their feelings about the day, and the women in their lives- Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson took the time to share his love for his daughters. He shared several posts inspired by his daughters, affirming that he would be there to love and protect them for the rest of his life. He appropriately tagged all of his posts with "#FatherDaughter", a term likely inspired by the "Girl-Dad" campaign that has been championed as part of Kobe Bryant's legacy. His eldest daughter, Simone, is set to make a WWE run, following her father's footsteps. She will be the first fourth-generation superstar in WWE history, following the careers of her father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. For his youngest daughters, aged 4 and 1, respectively, Dwayne chose to share an almost cryptic, yet inspiring message for both of them. He assures us that we will hear from his daughters, and feel their impact soon. If The Rock's larger than life personality is any sign, the world is lucky to have the Johnson girls as well. 9. Love & Hip Hop New York is bringing back the "Creep Squad," but this time there's some fisticuffs. The season finale of Love & Hip Hop New York aired on Monday (March 9) evening, and things took a turn when Rich Dollaz, Peter Gunz, and Cisco got together for a friendly chat. Wanting to put everything out on the table, Rich asked Cisco, "When are you gonna tell this n*gga that Amina stayed at your house last Super Bowl?" He was referring to Amina Buddafly, Peter's baby mama and former Love & Hip Hop co-star. Maury Phillips / Stringer / Getty Images Peter initially kept his cool during the revelation and tried to draw a parallel with Cisco. "So, let me ask you this," Peter said. "I can call your baby moms and tell her to come stay with me for the weekend? 'Cause you know I can do that." In a green screen clip, Peter added that he wasn't convinced that nothing happened when his ex stayed the night with his former friend. Cisco didn't take too kindly to Peter even mentioning the mother of his children, but Peter didn't care. Before you knew it, punches were thrown, fists were flying, people were running in the streets, and Rich was complaining about folks messing up his car. Watch the argumentative clip below as Peter Gunz and Cisco get heated over baby mama boundaries. View the full article

  11. Jared Leto, the notable actor turned musician, shared the aftermath footage of the moment a rock-climbing incident could have led to his death. The 48-year-old Louisiana-bred thespian took to his Twitter account this past Friday (March 6) to share photos and video of what transpired when he began to notice the rope that was supporting his body weight had begun to fray before he could establish himself in a save spot in the world-renowned Red Rock Canyon in Colorado. Charley Gallay/Getty Images The Suicide Squad actor, captioned the initial Twitter post featuring a photo of him gripping onto the side of a cliff and his frayed support rope, writing: "Not to sound dramatic, but this is the day I nearly died. Took a pretty good fall climbing with @AlexHonnold at Red Rock. Looked up and within seconds the rope was being cut by the rock while I dangled some 600 ft in the air. I remember looking down at the ground below." Leto followed up the original Tweet with a short ten-second video of the incident where his helmet cam recorded the footage of the Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman frantically gasping for air and attempting to calm his nerves, as he states: "Holy f*cking sh*t! Holy f*ck! It was fraying right at the point!" With Jared Leto and the rest of the Morbius (2020) cast preparing to go into full promo mode prior to the release of the "Living Vampire" movie in July, it would be tragic if the world and the production lost their leading man to an unexpected rock climbing accident. 12. Amber Heard and Johnny Depp's divorce debacle has been a tough one to wrap our minds around. Plenty of information about the allegations and case have been shared, but still, none of us truly know what happened. There is a lot of "he says", "she says", and although a settlement has been reached, more insight is surfacing. Heard had a restraining order placed on Depp after their split, preventing the two from communicating with each other, however, after they disregarded the order in favor of an in-person meeting, a mutual-agent, Christian Carino ended up being their muse. Text messages between Heard and Depp had to be filtered through Carino before making their way to each other, and as you would expect, the texts were very dramatic. "It feels like a dream and a nightmare all in one, it was difficult to not die when our eyes met. i have no choice but to dive into those pools of green. they represent every millisecond of what we had. i miss her. i love her. i always will. as will she. there were some difficult things to swallow...but, one either swallows or chokes,” an agonized Depp shared to his confidant. Frazer Harrison/Getty Images "What I wanted was a fresh start with my wife. which, i thought was what she wanted. she should do what she really feels...if her priorities are not us, then i will proceed and do what i have to do. i dangle no more," he added. Heard, too, opened up via text, "I'm afraid I am setting myself up to fall back in again. It was so hard to leave him. I've been through too much. And I see no future in this. And every time I see him it's like my chest is ripped open and every piece of my soul is ground down to a pulp. Since seeing him in San Francisco, I have been a complete mess. I literally have been sobbing all day and night". After news broke that Heard felt Depp violated the restraining order by traveling to San Fransisco for their meeting, Depp carefully deliberated. "Why did she come to Frisco??", was his conclusion. View the full article
  13. It was apparently a close call between Nia Long and Jada Pinkett-Smith for the role of Will Smith's girlfriend on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The part of Lisa Wilkes in season five of the classic series eventually went to Nia, but she revealed that she was actually production's second choice after Jada. In 1994, both ladies were toe-to-toe for the role, and the auditioning process for the part was how Will and Jada would first meet each other. The following year, Will and Jada officially became a couple. This is a story that has been shared repeatedly over the years, but Nia Long revisited the fun fact once again during a sit-down with PeopleTV's Couch Surfing. She watched her last scene on the show—the wedding—and reflected on a few memories. “First they cast Jada to play his girlfriend,” Nia said. “Yes! They cast Jada and they were like, ‘Jada’s too short.’ I’m like, 'I'm only about two inches taller than her, that does not make a difference, right.'" The casting didn't stop the two women from becoming friends over these past decades. “The joke that I have with Jada is that I got the job but she got the husband,” the 49-year-old added. “That’s like our running joke.” In another recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actress reflected on her Fresh Prince days and said, "Will is like a light. When he walks into a room, he changes the energy." Check out Nia Long's brief clip on PeopleTV's Couch Surfing and a scene from her time on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air below. View the full article
  14. Daniel Craig got candid about his life and legacy as one of the world's most coveted action-film stars, James Bond. The English actor originally took the helm of one of the longest-running film franchises following Pierce Bronsan's departure from the series following 2002's Die Another Day. Craig began his run as the overtly polished MI6 agent beginning with Casino Royale (2006) and following it with films Quantum of Solace (2008), Skyfall (2012), and Spectre (2015). Now, the 52-year-old is ending his tenure as James Bond in the upcoming No Time to Die (2020), which is currently being postponed due to the severity of the coronavirus. Daniel Craig sat down with GQ Magazine's very own Sam Knight for the publication's first-ever United States and British co-produced cover story between the two relative GQ entities. During the interview, the professionally-trained thespian revealed that he was originally reluctant to take on the role of James Bond, due to his desire to retain his anonymity. Craig states: "It was genuinely like, 'My life is going to get fucked if I do this' . . . It was literally like, 'Fuck off. I don't fucking want this. How dare you? How dare you offer this to me?'" The Knives Out actor later revealed his hesitance was nothing but a defense mechanism and felt that the studio's offer to him was "ludicrous." After accepting the role, Craig began to intensely study the character, reading all of Ian Fleming's book about the MI6 agent and relating to him. Craig believes that James Bond is actually a "really f*cking dark" character despite his caricature presented in the films. Craig continued: "I think it's more interesting. I know we can’t have him having amphetamine and speed and doing all these things. But inside, I know I'm doing that. And I wanted to inform the part and say that’s what he is. He's kind of a f*ckup. Because this job would f*ck you up." After 2015's Spectre, Daniel Craig was prepared to leave the franchise stating he felt "really physically low." His unwillingness to participate in the franchise caused the five-year wait between Spectre and the upcoming Cary Joji Fukunaga-directed No Time to Die. However, after he convinced the studio to let him be more hands-on in the writing process and add Phoebe Waller-Bridge to the production team, he agreed to do one last 007 film. Daniel Craig told GQ: "I don't think I would have been [okay] if I'd done the last film and that had been it. But this, I'm like…Let's go. Let's get on with it. I'm fine." The hardcopy of GQ's 2020 April issue will be available for purchase on March 17. Daniel Craig's full interview with the publication can be read, here. With that said, check out the official trailer for No Time to Die starring Daniel Craig in the video provided below. View the full article
  15. Can you still be considered one of the top rappers in the game if you use a ghostwriter? Jadakiss weighed in on the subject with two answers that he called "politically correct." The veteran emcee recently shared his anticipated and acclaimed project Ignatius, so he stopped by Sway in the Morning to chat about the record. While there, Jadakiss was asked if an artist can be considered one of the "Top 5" emcees if they use a ghostwriter, and the rapper answered both yes and no. Robin Marchant / Stringer / Getty Images "In our era, no way at all," Jadakiss said. "In today's [era], it don't matter." He added, "In our era, it wasn't even a thought. You wouldn't even think...once that happens, you outta the thing. You ain't gettin' a yellow jacket after that. Today, that don't even matter. If you can turn up to it and do whatever crazy-ass dances they do, they don't care. And that's what I don't like that's happening to the game." Jadakiss added that he's happy that the young artists are able to make money and have success, "but...when we're just erasing things out of the original black book of hip hop, I can't really condone that." During his talk, Jadakiss also revealed why the early days in his career were more "fun" for him. "In this particular business, when you get success, you get a target on your back," he said. "You gotta move different and accordingly. Watch family, friends, the snakes, spiders, things of that nature. It takes some of the happiness out of it. Opposed to when you going for that, that journey in the beginning is more fun 'cause the valleys and peaks and meeting people and learning new stuff. Then after you cross that line, the financial situation, everything is much better, but it's also that much dangerous and that much more snakes." Check out more from Jadakiss including his take on why he agrees with Young M.A about a lack of R&B in the current music culture below. View the full article
  16. Boston Celtics' All Star Jayson Tatum laced up yet another exclusive Air Jordan 34 colorway on Sunday night in Boston, following up the "Chinese Takeout" colorway, "Lemonade" PE and other special edition styles he has in the stash. This time around, Tatum's Air Jordan 34 was outfitted with multiple colors, honoring the women in Jayson’s life in celebration of yesterday being "International Women's Day." Tatum finished with 19 points, five rebounds and three assists with the colorful "Women's Day" PE on his feet but it wasn't enough to lift the Celtics to victory on Sunday, as the team fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder by the final of 105-104. That said, the Cs are still sitting in third place in the East with a record of 42-21, and Jordan Brand is surely cooking up even more PEs in preparation of Boston's post-season run. The 23-year-old took to her private Instagram account to announce the triumphant news to her 76,000-plus followers that she has successfully been maintaining her sobriety in the midst of all of the conflict and coverage she has been receiving over the past month. Last month, Spielberg revealed that she was entering the adult film industry, self-producing her very own solo sex acts and considering stripping as a means to provide steady income while fulfilling her very own creative/artistic desires. A little over a week later, the self-described 'sexual creature' was arrested on misdemeanor domestic violence charges in her hometown of Nashville, TN, following a public dispute with her 47-year-old professional darts-player fiancé, Chuck Pankow. Spielberg spent a total of twelve hours behind bars before being freed on a $1,000 bond on Feb. 29. Navigating my own fears like a pro who somehow still knows nothing. Send me good loving energy y’all and I can try to put that into the world," Spielberg continued. Spielberg followed her caption with several hashtags including #alcoholismawareness and #soberentertainer. Hopefully, the aspiring actress will be able to maintain her positive outlook and sobriety for many years to come. 19. Krizz Kaliko took to socials to share the album art and release of his forthcoming album. In November of last year, Krizz released the Immortal EP, which was followed up in January by the Forever EP. Although his next project is expected to be a full-length album, he has opted to stay consistent, titling it Eternal. Releasing all this music in such a short time might be stressful for most artists, but for Krizz, this is what he's been waiting for. Immortal was his first release in over three years. It signalled the end of a hunt for a new label. Krizz recently re-signed to Strange Music, the record label founded by fellow-Missourian, Tech N9ne. After speculation that he would be leaving Strange Music, Krizz decided to take a step back and remain loyal to the base that built him. With the help of his fans and wife, while Strange Music executives were in attendance, Krizz proudly signed a Strange Music contract while on stage. Krizz admitted to taking meetings with other labels but ultimately decided that he did not want to "restart" with a new label, especially ones that thought so highly of the imprint that he was signed to. Eternal will be released on March 13th, and we're very excited to hear it! View the full article

  21. Nike and Kyrie Irving have paid tribute to Kobe Bryant's iconic signature sneakers over the last few years with special edition "Mamba Mentality" colorways inspired by some of Kobe's most popular kicks. With "Mamba Day" (April 13th) on the horizon, rumors are swirling that Nike has plans to release the "Mamba Mentality" Nike Kyrie 6 next month. Specific details regarding the release have not yet been announced, but you can get an idea of what the kicks will look like via the leaked images embedded below. The overall color scheme harkens back to the Bruce Lee-inspired "Mamba Mentality" Nike Kyrie 3s, which were inspired by the yellow and black jumpsuit worn by Lee in the 1978 film "Game of Death." Specifically, this Kyrie 6 borrows design cues from the unreleased "Mamba Mentality" Kyrie 3, featuring a predominately red build with four yellow claw marks. As is tradition, an alternate Kobe/Kyrie logo sits proudly on the tongue. Any sneaker attached to Kobe will carry significantly more weight in the aftermath of his passing, so it'll be interesting to see how Nike handles this release. Stay tuned for additional images and release updates, and click here to preview the "Lakers" Kyrie 5 that is rumored to drop this month. View the full article
  22. After making a name for themselves on Wiz Khalifa's 2018 album Rolling Papers 2, THEMXXNLIGHT has been keeping their momentum going strong with a handful of releases since then. The latest offering comes in the form of Double Trouble, a two-song EP that features a standout track titled "Ride." Presley Ann/Getty Images for Taylor Gang Entertainment Although Wiz doesn't make an appearance this time around, frequent production collaborator Sledgren returns to provide a dreamy beat with help from BatmanOnTheBeatz. The song's theme deals with classic California love, with both Akash and Krish Chandani taking turns crooning about driving their respective lucky ladies around L.A. while clothes get lost and crimes get committed. Although the track is very much inspired by The Weeknd, both vocally and production-wise, the overall catchiness of the song itself gives it just enough cred to not get boxed in as just another take on the popular XO sound. Listen to "Ride" off the Double Trouble EP by THEMXXNLIGHT below: Quotable Lyrics: I don't care what your name is I'll pretend that I'm not famous I'll drive you throught Las Vegas Watch you strip until you naked You're my fantasy, if I wanna show it Just roll with it Shawty just ride with it View the full article

Along with his foray into acting, he recently teamed up with streaming platform Caffeine for two new shows including Bet With Set that finds the rapper placing bets against celebrity guests while they livestream themselves playing video games. Offset and his wife Cardi B are dominating right now as an entertainment power couple. Cardi herself recently made her acting debut in 2019's summer smash Hustlers starring J. Lo. There's no doubt that she had some sort of influence in Offset getting further into the world of acting. View the full article
  24. After years of struggling with her mental health, it appears though Amanda Bynes will receive the help she needs. As reported by The Blast, after a court hearing with her family and fiance appearing in front of a judge, Bynes was given the opportunity to admit herself into a psychiatric facility. The alternative option would be that she would be taken there directly after her trial. At the time of the hearing, Bynes agreed to the conditions, but once the weekend came around and she wasn't complying, her family had to get involved. After not reporting to the live-in facility, Bynes also ended things with her recent fiance, a student whom she met through AA. The engagement was called off as a way for both parties to focus on getting themselves better, without the added responsibilities of treating each other. According to her former fiance, he was caught off-guard about the severity of her situation, assuming that she hadn't been truthful with him about her condition. Bynes was very open about her relationship and love for Paul, her ex-fiance, and is likely heart-broken that he left at such a vulnerable time. Bynes' family has been in contact with her since the trial and is trying to get her the help she deserves. We all want the best for the parties involved and would want nothing less than her getting the help she promised the judge she would get. View the full article
  25. When the anticipation for Lil Uzi Vert’s sophomore album reached desperate heights, he would repeatedly be rushed by fans demanding an expected release window. Uzi would often give a nonchalant response to this pestering, as if the question didn’t really concern him. In one instance, when someone shouted “When could we see the album?” as the Philadelphia rapper was entering his car, he paused for a moment to ponder. He seemed like he was deciding where he could conveniently fit an album release into his schedule, but then he just gave up, tossing out an “I don’t even know” before disappearing. While this uncertainty could have been attributed to Uzi’s well-publicized label issues, deep down, fans knew that his interest wasn’t in the album at that point. If Uzi wanted to drop, he would have found a way to drop. His indifference wasn’t performative. Uzi fans may have been left in the dark for some time, but he made it up to them with the Eternal Atake rollout. Uzi pivoted from secrecy to total transparency. His Twitter page became a behind-the-scenes guided tour of the album’s creation process. It all started with the December release of “Futsal Shuffle 2020”. The dance challenge associated with the single got everyone up on their feet. Uzi’s energy was back in the game and it was contagious. All the people waiting around for him were now rapidly stepping in a procession towards his sophomore effort. Uzi was skipping at the front of the pack, his newly-dyed orange hair serving as the fire that led the way. A week ahead of Eternal Atake’s sudden release, Uzi descended in a spaceship to beam up his followers for an intergalactic trip. His anime-inspired alter-ego, Renji, had been swapped out for Baby Pluto, a cosmic traveller who was eager to take off. After teasing that the album would be arriving in two weeks time, Baby Pluto grabbed the wheel and pushed the big red button to unload all that was in store: 18 tracks. Shortly after Eternal Atake was launched into the world at the odd time of 10 AM on a Friday, Uzi confirmed that the project is comprised of three parts. A fan speculated that Uzi’s personas take turns presenting themselves: Baby Pluto on Tracks 1-6, Renji on Tracks 7-12 and Good Old Uzi on Tracks 13-18. Uzi retweeted this theory and complimented the fan’s acuity. With this table of contents, the album can be dissected as encounters with foreign creatures on distinct planets. Suzanne Cordeiro/AFP/Getty Images For years, Uzi has been trying to communicate the message that he’s not one of us. It’s been Lil Uzi Vert vs. The World. Being perpetually misunderstood has led to some despondent moments - which have been documented on social media - but at other points, he has floated above dull earthlings with glee. In the first section of Eternal Atake, we get to see Uzi fully embrace his extraterrestrial self. The opening track is named after it, “Baby Pluto”. The plinks of keys evoke shimmering stardust and Uzi is swirling in the midst of it. The sense that you’ve left Earth is either manifested through these ethereal effects or through beats that sound like ill-fated space missions. “Silly Watch” is when you suspect something has gone amiss with the ship. However, Uzi appears to be either in total control or blissfully uninterested in the looming danger. A brooding synthline lurks in the background but Uzi remains one step ahead of it. His music is always most invigorating when his youthful energy translates to a rapper who refuses to color inside the lines. “Silly Watch” sets off a four-track run of industrial bangers. Over clunking production, Uzi indulges in his brashest bars. “Neck is achoo, might catch the flu / Banana clip, straight from the zoo,” he swaggers on “You Better Move”, a song which could be considered as the sequel to Luv Is Rage2’s “For Real”. Uzi’s so good at tackling these sparse, off-kilter instrumentals because his flows are rarely constrained by whatever madness is occurring around him anyway. On “POP”, he spins himself into a frenzy when shouting, “Balenci, Balenci, Balenci, Balenci, Balenci, Balenci, Balenci, Balenci, Balenci, Balenci, Balenci, Balenci, Balenci, Balenci, Balenci.” Meanwhile, the beat is similarly self-destructing with spastic hiccups. It makes you feel as untouchable as Uzi sounds. Renji arrives to pull you out of this dark region. If there was still any doubt about Uzi’s strong pop sensibilities, it’s put to rest with “I’m Sorry” and the two bubbly songs that follow, “Celebration Station” and “Bigger Than Life”. If there’s any justice in this world, at least one of these will be sent to the top of the Hot 100. He pulls out the catchy melodies and sing-songy cadences that turned “XO Tour Llif3” into a hit. While the first act of the album featured songs with impulsive interludes and stray thoughts, Renji returns to more conventional structures. These anthems are meant to get everyone to hold hands and run into the rainbow-painted animated world Uzi created. The dancing comes to a halt with “Chrome Heart Tags”, where you can just float in the euphoric atmosphere produced by Chief Keef. Eternal Atake’s final chunk re-introduces the rapper that we have grown to know and love. It even houses “P2”, the subdued sequel to “XO Tour Llif3”. While these tracks might not reflect some otherworldly narrative, they have enough quirks to stay interesting. The sunshine of the Renji portion trickles into “Urgency”, where Uzi passionately sings alongside Syd (of The Internet), the album’s unexpected sole feature. Lil Uzi Vert engaged fans in what was perhaps the most immersive album rollout in recent years. When an album can come and go so quickly these days, its embarking on these kinds of rollercoasters that allows the consumption process to exist beyond a Friday release. There will now be weeks of memories associated with these songs. The world of Eternal Atake is still expanding. Uzi is currently interacting with fans as they plot the album’s deluxe edition as a communal endeavor. We have always suspected that there was so much going on inside Uzi’s mind that we couldn’t penetrate. Eternal Atake and the whole experience that came along with it delivered what fans were desperately waiting for. View the full article
