PYTHON TAKES TOP SPOT

Comedy classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail has been named the favourite British film of all time.

With lines such as, "We are the knights who say 'ni'," the flick knocked Stanley Kubrick's landmark film A Clockwork Orange off the top spot.

The annual top 10 also had the more recent releases Trainspotting, Shakespeare In Love, Sense and Sensibility and Love Actually.

They were joined by Lawrence of Arabia, The Third Man, The Bridge On the River Kwai and another film from the Monty Python team - Life of Brian.

The survey was carried out by website firm Amazon and the Internet Movie Database to coincide with this Sunday's Bafta awards.

Amazon DVD product manager Mark Walker said: "This survey demonstrates the eclectic nature of British films.

"I think the biggest surprise is the presence of two Monty Python films in the top 10, they lead a strong field from the genre of great British comedy."

Only one Bond movie makes the top 20 - Goldfinger, starring Sean Connery as 007 and Honor Blackman as Pussy Galore, at 11.

The top 20:

1 Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

2 A Clockwork Orange (1971)

3 Trainspotting (1996)

4 Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

I much prefer 'The Meaning of Life' to any other Python effort, but what do I know.

It's more of a sketch-based film than a flowing fully fledged film, but it's a classic AFAIC.

The Beatles movies - A Hard Days Night, Help and particularly, Yellow Submarine were all pretty good. Other offbeat movies include: Morgan, and The Loved One, Casino Royale (the model for Austin Powers) and anything else Peter Sellers was in.. (all comedies)

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
