Average U.S. Gas Price Drops 25 Cents

October 23,2005 | CAMARILLO, Calif. -- Retail gas prices across the nation fell an average of 25 cents in the past two weeks as refineries in the Gulf Coast steadily resumed production, according to a survey released Sunday.

Still, prices remained slightly higher than pre-Hurricane Katrina levels.

After record profits, oil companies see backlash

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A profit bonanza for major oil companies has sparked a backlash among US lawmakers and others, who argue the gains should be used to help ease consumers' pain from record energy prices.

The scrutiny intensified after Exxon Mobil, the world's biggest oil company, posted a profit of 9.92 billion dollars for the third quarter -- the biggest in US corporate history.

"Oil and gas companies are enjoying record profits. That is fine. This is America," House of Representatives Speaker

Dennis Hastert said.

I wonder how many energy stocks he owns? <_>

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist called for hearings into possible price-gouging.

Oh yea, that's gonna fix the problem! Never mind the hurricanes, big oil profit mongering and war in the middle east. Those things had absolutely nothing to do with gas prices going up!!

Document Says Oil Chiefs Met With Cheney Task Force

A White House document shows that executives from big oil companies met with Vice President Cheney's energy task force in 2001 -- something long suspected by environmentalists but denied as recently as last week by industry officials testifying before Congress.

The document, obtained this week by The Washington Post, shows that officials from Exxon Mobil Corp., Conoco (before its merger with Phillips), Shell Oil Co. and BP America Inc. met in the White House complex with the Cheney aides who were developing a national energy policy, parts of which became law and parts of which are still being debated.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
