i thought paranoid was the new normal. when i saw your article, i immediately thought--oh great, that's like the UK version of 'bin laden determined to strike w/i the US' memo that was ignored.

Reuters:

Britain’s top intelligence and law enforcement officials concluded less than a month before the London bombings that there was no group with current intent and the capability to attack the United Kingdom, the New York Times reported on Tuesday, citing a confidential intelligence report.

The media is focusing on this, pointing fingers at intelligence agencies saying they let us down. I think that is just more towards pushing for the inevitable conclusion that we need a facist state.

Before we all draw that conclusion, what I want to know is if the government had this information, WhyTF are we being told we need ID cards as terrorists are ten a penny?

I agree with Hunter's perspective.

As for me, I have no fear whatsoever. I am not going to change my lifestyle one iota...

Eventually the terrorists will be brought to their knees, and the leadership in this country will be changed for the better

Spot on that man. I'm going to carry on exactly as before. I can't spend the next (hopefully) 60 years avoiding places on the off chance that someone is going to blow me up.

These bastards should grasp the concept that they might cause what in the scheme of things is a relatively minor inconvenience (that might sound like I'm trivialising it but London is conducting it's business pretty much as normal at the moment) and that they will never win.

It isn't the terrorist who change things, it is the political reaction.

The funniest thing I hear is people saying we wont let them win. Do we even know what it is they want? No one has said, except the politicians who put forward the laughable sugestion that they want us to run around screaming until democracy collapses and we all hate and kill each other.

Unless we know what they want, we cant stop them from getting it. Perhaps they want us all branded with "property of the UK government" in the form of ID cards or perhaps they love the idea of people being locked away without trail. Maybe they enjoy stop and searches. If that is what they want, then I hate to say it, but they are winning.

To those who say this wont change their lifestyle, I say the government will make sure that is not true.

There is speculation that it is just a group after publicity, rather then anyone wanted to do real damage.

What is strange is that the police keep pushing everyone further back as if they are expecting something they weren't when the police first arrived and 100m seemed enough.

Arrest at Whitehall now. PM to speak soon.

Blair sounded more annoyed that it has interupted his meeting with Howard.

Yet again he makes sense. His undertone was that it was a minor incident that has been blown out of proportion. He is saying again that nothing can be done to stop stupid events like this.

Then it all went wrong with the Q+A.

Howard came across well - wrong, but well.

Man shot dead by police on Tube

A man has been shot dead by armed officers at Stockwell Tube station, as police hunt four would-be bombers.

Passenger Mark Whitby told BBC News he had seen a man of Asian appearance shot five times by "plain-clothes police officers" with a handgun.

"I saw the gun being fired five times into the guy - he is dead," he said.

Passengers were evacuated from the Northern Line station in south London. Police have also cordoned off a 200-metre area around the station.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
