As a Houston Astro fan since 1964 (when they were still named Colt 45's), I'd love to see them win it all this year...but common sense points toward a rematch of the 1967 World Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Boston Red Sox, with the Red Sox breaking their curse and taking the championship. The Yankees pitching woes and inconsistent hitting against top-caliber pitching will derail them, perhaps even in this Twins series.

That'd be good enough for some Twins fans... just knowing they knocked the Yanks out. :D

Just once I'd like to see the Twins do something wonderful. Just once I'd like to see any Minnesota sports team do something wonderful. Being in the headlines for hitting old ladies with cars doesn't count *coughVikingscough*

Potato, if that series goes to the 5th game Santana will smoke the Yankees, just like he did in Yankee Stadium....

BRISTOL, Connecticut - It was a sorry season on the field for the Seattle Mariners, but a record-breaking season by Ichiro Suzuki.

The 30-year-old native from Kobe, Japan broke an 84-year-old record with 262 hits and became the first player in major league history to collect 200 hits in his first four seasons.

Ichiro broke the record of 257 hits set by George Sisler of the St. Louis Browns in 1920.

so did this suzuki guy break the record?

Yes, he broke George Sisler's 84 year old record for hits in a season. He also set a record for most singles in a season, which does lend itself to some small criticism that he is just punching and slapping at the ball, and not taking a full swing. He is a blazingly fast baserunner, using his speed to beat out infield ground balls quite often. However, despite his speed, he only had 24 doubles (2-base hits) all season long, which indicates he's not hitting the ball with a lot of power into the outfield defensive gaps. Still, his hits record is quite an accomplishment despite the lack of power.

Dude was right...the Yankees did handle the Twins fairly easily, but their pitching weakness did stand out and the Red Sox are offensive giants with 2 pitching aces, as opposed to the Yankees, whose only actual pitching star at the moment is the closer, Mariano Rivera. It will surprise me greatly if the Yankees can beat the Red Sox this time for the league championship.

It wont surprise me. The Yanks have set a record this year for come from behind wins. Take a look at their roster and the stats - nearly the whole lineup has at least 20 home runs individually- and if they designated hitters were full time, they would hit 20 0r 30 easily. You cannot beat that kind of power...

The League Championship series are set. In the American League there's another intense Yankees/Red Sox battle, and in the National League my Astros won their first-ever playoff series and will face the St. Louis Cardinals for that League Championship. I still see a Red Sox vs. Cardinals matchup for the World Series, but some Dude may not agree....

I eat long odds for breakfast.... 'sides, there's been so many sports upsets lately I'm feeling anything can happen.

Look at the record this year - almost 50/50....

A topsy turvy game. Mike Mussina had a perfect game going for the first six innnings and the Yanks had an 8-0 lead, but Boston exploded for 5 in the seventh and two in the eighth to make it 8-7, but Rivera, the best reliever in baseball, closed the innning. Bernie Williams hit a triple in the ninth bringing home Rodriquez and Sheffield, to make it 10-7 for the Yanks. Boston threatened with two men on base and one out, but Rivera forced a double play. Yanks take game one...

Are there any bet takers yet

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
