Lawmakers to examine smoking in film

Copyright-protection also to be studied

WASHINGTON (Hollywood Reporter) -- Hollywood lobbyists will be busy this week as lawmakers examine smoking on film and legislation that could undo some key portions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

The hearings, one in the Senate Commerce Committee on Tuesday and one in the House Commerce Committee on Wednesday, make nice legislative bookends for the entertainment industry's current troubles in Washington as one focuses on content and the other on copyright.

Smoking in film? Legislators have no business telling artists what they may write in their scripts or make into films. Hey Leggyslators, go take a hike :reallymad: :reallymad:

from the article: "pushes for R ratings for movies in which the actors light up"

but you can show partial nudity and drop the f-bomb once and get a PG-13, and not to mention the violence!

But you smoke and it gets an R? - gimmie a break!

So the second half of the article was interesting too - about the DCMA - there's a bill trying to go through which would allow you to circumvent copy protection for making fair-use copies! Using logic you would think it would pass, but that's never been the case in laws anyway.

At least you could back up your DVDs legally.

Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
