From BBC 12.04.04

'Canadian sealers have pushed out to sea for the largest cull in 50 years despite protests by environmentalists and animal rights groups.

'The government is allowing more than 300,000 seals to be killed, arguing that the campaign is both ecologically sound and economically justified...

'...Under new guidelines, most seals are meant to be shot and not clubbed to death in a bid to make the killing more humane.

What the article fails to take into account is that 98.7% of Canadians depend on freshly culled seal fat to heat their homes and provide electricity. That's not even taking into account the nutritional value. Seal meat is a mainstay on almost every Canadian's table, with the average family eating it at least twice a day.

Well, maybe not.

I have no problem with this.

i think there's a cultural thing going on here. when i moved to EU i freaked over how much more appreciative europeans are about all kinds of animals. it's like a given here that everyone's an animal-lover; you can see loads of TV programmes on all sorts every day (not like in NYC where something good would be on like once a month).

& this extends to pets: you can take your cat/dog on public transportation, in shops, restaurants &c. back in north amerika, it's a totally different thing and they're relegated under the FDA (food & drug administration). i've never been to canada but if what Shawn says is correct, then it's more a matter of necessity (although it hurts me to think about it, loving 'anything covered in fur...').

You forgot to mention they also make roofing material and fiberglass from it.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
