The Games finally came home! Today is one of the biggest days in recent Greek history. The olympic flame for our own Olympics was lit today in Olympia. I'm watching the event live right now and I can't tell you how touched I am.

Proud day for our little town too. A little kid that was chosen to take the olive branch and hand it to the first athlete is from my town. He was chosen from 1000s of kids that applied for it!

details here. Find out the dates that the torch goes through your town

That's quite a journey for a flame. How are they going to cope with the extra traffic for the games in Athens (not Georgia.... the REAL one)? or has that vastly improved in recent years?

it has improved...

The journey of the flame was chosen by the greek commitee. It's the first time it will go to all continents. Approximately 78000 km and more than 11000 people will carry it! Maybe the rest of the world finally finds out what the 'olympic spirit' means...

My flatmate has been training and has lottery funding and sponsership and everything. His team (two man boat) regularly beats the british champions. He is very serious.

A friend suggested that this year, instead of getting athletes to carry the flame, old grannies should do it. That way perhaps the construction will be done by the time the flame arrives! lol. j/k.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
