Hilton: I'm not above the law...

Five days after she was sentenced to jail, Paris Hilton says she understands the seriousness of driving under the influence and that she is not "above the law".

"I am ready to face the consequences of violating probation," Hilton said in a statement released today by her new attorney, Richard Hutton, a specialist in driving under the influence cases. "I do not expect to be treated better than anyone else who violated probation. However, my hope is that I will not be treated worse."

The 26-year-old socialite was represented by attorney Howard Weitzman during her probation-violation hearing on Friday. A receptionist at Hutton's Pasadena office declined to say when Hilton retained his services.

Hutton did not return repeated calls for comment.

Hilton said she released the statement because "I feel the need to correct what I believe are misperceptions about me".

"I absolutely realise how serious driving under the influence is," she said.

"I could not live with myself if anyone was injured or killed while I was driving while impaired. Clearly, no one should - no matter how slightly."

The notorious party girl, who parlayed her pampered lifestyle into a reality TV show and a pop CD, was sentenced to 45 days in county jail for violating the terms of her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case.

A judge ordered her to report to the women's jail in suburban Lynwood by June 5, adding that she will not be allowed any work release, furloughs, use of an alternative jail or electronic monitoring instead of time behind bars.

Hilton's original legal team, headed by Weitzman, filed a notice with the court on Friday indicating their intent to appeal the decision.

Paris Hilton DEAD in new sculpture...

A New York gallery is featuring a bizarre sculpture of Hollywood celebutante and socialite Paris Hilton in a distinctly unglamorous pose - pregnant on an autopsy slab with one leg up in stirrups.

The sculpture, which goes on public display on Friday, was dreamed up by artist Daniel Edwards, whose previous works have included a nude, life-sized sculpture of pop princess Britney Spears on all fours giving birth.

The Hilton sculpture, which is designed to warn of the dangers of drink driving, comes complete with interactive opened abdominal cavity. The gallery is encouraging art lovers to get their hands on the removable organs.

Hilton was arrested in September last year for drink driving and was sentenced to a jail term last week for driving on a suspended licence.

"An interactive Public Service Announcement featuring the graphic display of a tiara-wearing, autopsied Paris Hilton with removable innards is designed to warn teenagers of the hazards of underage drinking," the gallery said.

"Paris's internals, which include her small intestines, uterus and foetuses, are removable to assist teens with an empathetic view of drunk driving tragedy from the coroner's perspective," gallery director David Kesting said.

The sculpture also features Hilton's Chihuahua Tinkerbell, also wearing a tiara, rampant and begging for attention.

"The tableau ... reminds potential prom queens no one is impervious to the pitfalls of drinking," the gallery, Capla Kesting Fine Art, said.

The sculpture is for sale, although the asking price was not disclosed.

The gallery has also invited students to compose an obituary for the socialite, based on the artwork.

Paris 'distraught' over jail term - psychiatrist...

Socialite Paris Hilton is "traumatised" and "distraught" over her 45-day jail term, according to her psychiatrist.

The blonde hotel heiress, who is facing an order to testify in a $US10 million civil suit against her, is not capable of taking part in the trial, claims Dr Charles Sophy.

Sophy insists Paris needs to recover from the shock of receiving a 45-day jail sentence, after violating her probation by driving with a suspended licence.

The psychiatric report said: "Given Miss Hilton's current psychological and emotional state she is not capable of any meaningful participation in a trial.

"She is emotionally distraught and traumatised as a consequence of the findings at the May 4 hearing, the jail sentence imposed upon her by the judge, and her fear of incarceration."

Papers filed by Paris' lawyers reveal the 26-year-old has received treatment from Sophy for eight months, and has visited the psychiatrist several times since her probation violation hearing.

The slander and libel suit, filed against Paris by actress Zeta Graff, is due to begin on May 21.

Graff claims she was falsely accused by Paris of stalking the socialite and her ex-lover Paris Latsis - who Graff previously dated. Graff has accused Paris of spreading "vicious lies" about her which appeared in the New York Post newspaper in July 2005.

A representative for Paris has declined to comment on the psychiatric report.

Paris Hilton on chain gang

PARIS Hilton could be forced to join a "chain gang" because overcrowding in Los Angeles jails mean the hotel heiress might not be able to serve her 45-day sentence in prison.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, in charge of the US's only "all-female chain gang", says he's spoken to the chief of jails in Los Angeles and offered to house Hilton at Tent City.

"I just made an offer," Arpaio told the Drudge Report. "Instead of reducing for her sentence, which I feel is wrong, why not bring her over here? We can incarcerate her here. She can do her time over here."

NEW YORK — Kathy Hilton hopes young people will learn from her 26-year-old socialite daughter, Paris, who is facing 45 days in jail for violating her probation.

"We can only hope that something positive will come from all of this. Hopefully, young people who look up to people like Paris will learn from this," Hilton said in a statement read Wednesday on ABC's "The View" by co-host Barbara Walters.

Kathy Hilton called her Tuesday night and offered the statement, Walters said.

Paris Hilton will serve about half of her 45-day jail sentence and will be separated from the general inmate population, authorities said.

The hotel heiress will spend about 23 days in a "special needs housing unit" at the Century Regional Detention Centre in suburban Lynwood, Los Angeles County sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

Her sentence was shortened after jail officials gave her credit for good behaviour, Whitmore said.

Officials considered several factors in calculating the credit, including that she appeared for her latest court date, he said.

Hilton will stay in a unit that contains 12 two-person cells reserved for police officers, public officials, celebrities and other high-profile inmates, he said.

Like everyone else in the 2,200-inmate facility, Hilton will get at least an hour outside her cell each day to shower, watch television, participate in outdoor recreation or talk on the telephone, he said.

The 26-year-old socialite was sentenced to jail this month for violating the terms of her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case.

A judge ordered her to report to jail by June 5.

A call to her lawyer, DUI (driving under the influence) specialist Richard Hutton, was not immediately returned.

Her publicist, Elliot Mintz, declined to comment.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
