snoopdogg.jpgSnoop Dogg has appealed to Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Governor of California, to spare the life of an ex-gang leader.

Last week, Snoop went on a protest to the San Quentin prison calling for Stanley ‘Tookie’ Williams to be taken off death row.

Williams was found guilty of killing four people during robberies back in 1981, but has since spent his time in prison teaching young people to stay away from gangs. He has also written a series of books.

As the BBC reports, Snoop said outside the prison, "Stanley 'Tookie' Williams is not a regular guy, he's an inspiration.

“All I want to say to the governor is: it's about keeping this man alive because his voice needs to be heard."

And it could be argued that he's fundamentally a different person than he was when he was 20.

The question for the Governor is "Can I risk pardoning him and have him go out and rob a liquor store and shoot a policeman a few weeks later?" I don't think many politicians would take that risk.

That would be fine with me if I was governor...but Ah-Nold's base , if he has one anymore, is the right wingnuts.....and they would deficate bricks if he didn't kill the guy....especially a black guy. I bet a blond-haired guy with blue eyes would have a chance at getting the life sentence.

haha man it sure cold in here while I was gone. Is redneck still around or am I the only one from the right still here?

IMHO I would rather keep this idiot alive than cost the state even more money to execute him. I beleive the cost for the last state execution was somewhere near $2,000,000. Compare that to the average cost of keeping an inmate alive for life on death row which is near $990,000........

Anyway I still support the governor for what he is trying to do to help this state. I am a proud republican California voter(there are still a few of us here) that actually give a rats ass about this state. It seems that there is more socialism being preached here in this state and the rest of the USA for that matter than anyone wants to admit. Every time you turn around it is always another bullshit law being pushed thru by the left such as "Save a damn tree, Save a milk fetch(desert weed), your motorcycles are too loud in the middle of the frigging mohave desert(we now have noise ordiance laws that our bikes cant be above 96db), or you cant smoke at the beach anymore. WTF. These are just a few things that came to me this evening. There are plenty more but I wont go on for now. Oh well the climate and area here still rocks so I guess I gotta put up with it. haha

Rant over.......

He has been suspiciously absent.

I believe he's secretly Karl Rove.

Protecting the environment is not socialism. We live in a world which is controlled more and more every day by the corporations, who in turn control the government through all their donations. Where is the socialism? I dont see any handouts going may way. I dont see a free health care system which is available to everybody. Ironically, I run my own business. I dont see any handouts given to me there either. So whats your beef?

I believe that people can transform their lives. I believe this man, who has won a nobel prize, has done so. He will be more beneficial to society than being in jail. What does socialism have to do with that?

I did a research on this guy and he is pretty famous. I had heard of him but didn't remember...

Tookie's apology:

"Twenty-five years ago when I created the Crips youth gang with Raymond Lee Washington in South Central Los Angeles, I never imagined Crips membership would one day spread throughout California, would spread to much of the rest of the nation and to cities in South Africa, where Crips copycat gangs have formed. I also didn't expect the Crips to end up ruining the lives of so many young people, especially young black men who have hurt other young black men.

Raymond was murdered in 1979. But if he were here, I believe he would be as troubled as I am by the Crips legacy.

So today I apologize to you all -- the children of America and South Africa -- who must cope every day with dangerous street gangs. I no longer participate in the so-called gangster lifestyle, and I deeply regret that I ever did.

As a contribution to the struggle to end child-on-child brutality and black-on-black brutality, I have written the Tookie Speaks Out Against Gang Violence children's book series. My goal is to reach as many young minds as possible to warn you about the perils of a gang lifestyle.

I am no longer "dys-educated" (disease educated). I am no longer part of the problem. Thanks to the Almighty, I am no longer sleepwalking through life.

I pray that one day my apology will be accepted. I also pray that your suffering, caused by gang violence, will soon come to an end as more gang members wake up and stop hurting themselves and others.

I vow to spend the rest of my life working toward solutions.

Amani (Peace),

Stanley "Tookie" Williams, Surviving Crips Co-Founder,

April 13, 1997"

  • 3 weeks later...

The Reverend Jesse Jackson marches to Death Row Monday in a last-minute effort to try and spare the life of Stanley Tookie Williams. The convicted murderer is waiting to find out whether Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will grant him clemency. He is scheduled to be executed just after midnight at San Quentin prison for murdering four people in 1979.

Rev. Jesse Jackson, Williams supporter: "If he's killed it will not make us any safer, it will not make us any more secure, it will not deter crime."

It is quiet at San Quentin Prison so far; not a lot of protesters have arrived yet.

The staff is getting ready for it. The prisoners are on lockdown, and that means that no work or school programs will be running today. They want to dedicate the entire staff to the anticipated execution, and they want the guards to ready for the unexpected.

The Reverend Jesse Jackson joined death penalty opponents in a protest walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. Jackson said that he has met with Williams in the past, and that Williams wants to live but is prepared to die.

Williams was convicted of killing four people in 1979 and he founded the Crips street gang.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is considering granting clemency to Williams. We have been waiting for that decision since Thursday that's when the governor met with attorneys from both sides.

The people on both sides of the issue say that it's time for this matter to be resolved one way or the other.

Rev. Jesse Jackson, Williams supporter: "I feel that the governor, by dragging it out to the last hour, has created more punishment and more cruelty for Stanley Williams. Every hour of every day, 'Will I die or will I live? Is this my last night? Is this my last meal?' Dragging it out is essentially a form of punishment."

Lora Owens, victim's stepmother: "If you don't want the death penalty, then go before the legislature and get it changed. But don't stand behind men like Williams."

The Reverend Jackson is at San Quentin and arrived just before 11:00 a.m. Monday morning. He put his name on a list of people who want to visit with Williams today. The reverend doesn't know yet if Williams will see him.

Williams is in a visiting room surrounded by his legal team and loved ones.

Vernell Crittendon, San Quentin spokesman: "He did eat this morning, but he's very quiet and is very cooperative, and is causing no problem as far as following the direction given to him by the staff."

ABC7 saw one protester at the prison Monday morning, but hundreds more are expected later. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is going it be present to help with security.

It s a controversial issue, because Williams' supporters believe that he has been in prison and written children's books, and think he's better alive than dead. They are expected to be out in full-force with lots of emotion.

This evening around 6:00 p.m., Williams will be moved to solitary confinement. At that time he can decide on his last meal, if he has any requests. It can't cost more than $50, and it has to be something that the prison can buy at the local grocery store.

If clemency is not granted, Stanley Tookie Williams will be executed after midnight. ABC7 will keep you posted on any decision by the governor throughout the day.

I think if he's down to hoping Ahnold has the backbone to do anything he's screwed.

I'm against Capitol Punishment. I think society might have been better off if they allowed the guy to continue his anti-gang stuff in jail. However, I just spoke to some people who would know - and they say he was a violent killer who never admitted to the deeds - this makes me have no sympathy...

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
