Google to launch instant messaging program

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Google reportedly plans to launch an instant messaging program as early as this week, in a challenge to America Online, Yahoo and Microsoft.

"Google Talk" will allow computer users to chat with their keyboards and allow users with headsets to have voice conversations with other computer users with headsets, according to the Los Angeles Times, citing unnamed sources.

Not sure how another IM will fit into the marketplace.

Everyone needs to be on the same one for it to work, yet competition is also good.

Hopefully the Gaim/Trillian plugins will be available shortly after launch.

The company moto is something like "do no wrong". With fantastic free software like google world, i love them, but i'm seriously concerned about how they can plan to fund it all in the long run. People have been warning google is a privacy time bomb for a long time - and their EULAs do nothing to quell those fears.

Not sure if I trust them on my desktop, but I may cave if it is up to their usually standard :(

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google Inc. is set to introduce its own instant messaging system, the Los Angeles Times reported on Tuesday, marking the expansion by the Web search leader into text and also voice communications.

Citing unnamed sources "familiar with the service," the Los Angeles Times said that Google's Instant Messaging program would be called Google Talk and could be launched as early as Wednesday.

Google Talk goes beyond text-based instant messaging using a computer keyboard to let users hold voice conversations with other computer users, the newspaper quoted a source as saying.

It is just their own Jabber client. Jabber is an open source IM protocol, but is crap because their servers cut out every 10mins. Use any jabber compatible client and set the server to google's for a best-of-both experience.

If you want VOIP, you currently need to use the official client.
