It seemed like a good idea at the time

20 years later, New Coke and other marketing fiascoes

By Michael E. Ross, Reporter MSNBC

Updated: 9:30 p.m. ET April 22, 2005

It was early 1985, and the news was slowly leaking out: The Coca-Cola Co. was working on a new kind of Coke, a variation of a product that reached back through American history and a rejoinder to the emerging challenge from an upstart called Pepsi.

That was when I quit drinking Coke............I've never been able to drink it since, they may say "Coke Classic" but I just never did think it tasted the same after that.

I very very seldom even drink cola now, it's usually Root Beer, Grape, Orange or some other flavor unless I can locate a Jolt Cola somewhere.

Jolt can be bought on-line but it's way too expensive, they want $19.95 for a case of 12 cans.

It's not that I hate it but I don't srink it. I kind of like Pepsi-Max though.

Can someone send me a case of root beer? I can't remeber the brand but it was in Seattle a few years ago where I found the best one. I had to go back and buy about 30 cans. THAT was the nectar of gods.

much to our shock, coke and pepsi have different formulae over here, so do their 'lite' variations. so do marlboro cigs (both lite and regular), they totally taste wrong. and camel have a lavender packet in germany for some reason...chris was a camel lite smoker in the states but the second he saw those packets he switched to marlboro lites.

gimme a dr pepper anytime (not available in DE but thankfully here). :)

I can't remember Dude but I remember it said "old style root beer" on it

cigarettes are different all right. Lucky Strike tasted like puke in the states. Perfect taste here

I like IBC better than Barq's....but since Coca-Cola owns Barq's I know where Dude stands...

No preference when it comes to root beer, but cola is another story

Mountain Dew works for me...

You don't get that here :(

The second time I went to America, with all the great things I was due to see on my tour, Mountain Dew was near the top of my list of things that made me excited I was going!

EDIT: Due -> Dew :bonk

Well, if you're not going to send us all a case, at least you could let us know what brand you think is best.... :(

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
