  1. And there you have it, Skepta has come out the woodwork to answer Wiley's oh-so-public derision. Back in October of last year, Wiley accused Skepta of treason for doing business with his longtime rival Dizzee Rascal. For those who don't know: Wiley and Dizzee were closer than kin once upon a time, only to see their friendship into chaos over a stabbing some 15 years ago. Wiley would later take responsibility for the incident. So, Wiley went ahead and labeled both his longtime rival and Skepta "frauds" and "paigons" for skulking behind his back - not to mention a second callout to Skepta for venturing out of pocket with non-domestic collaborations with Drake and A$AP Rocky. It would seem, Wiley is something of a Grime purist, perhaps even by his own admission. "I tell people to work with you, you tell people to ‘fuck Wiley. Fuck grime, I’m a pop star. Fuck all them man.’" Wiley tweeted in October. "You and Skepta, I hope you’re happily ever after bruv.” Now that we're in February of 2019, Skepta deemed it appropriate to file his response on wax. "Wish You Were Here" is every bit the type of diss record that reads like a rap sheet. The second verse in particular summons tons of names to the gridlock, some more public than others. And when you do give it a listen, bear in mind, the Tim Westwood dubbing is both nauseating and necessary, at the same time. As far as the Grime scene is concerned, no greater platform exists than TimWestwoodTV for a commencement notice of this magnitude. 2. Marianne Williamson officially announced her presidential campaign in Los Angeles on Monday, January 28, after which she sat down with CNN's John Berman to discuss her political agenda. During the network's "New Day" program on Thursday, the aspiring democratic nominee emphasized her belief in the need for a "moral and spiritual awakening" for the nation, an ideal that serves as the backbone of her crusade. A notable element of her plans relates to reparations. She cites the country's "amoral economic system and systematic racism" to justify the need for a reparations budget. "We need a moral and spiritual awakening in the country," Williamson said. "Nothing short of that is adequate to fundamentally change the patterns of our political dysfunction... I have had a 35-year career in naming and transforming those dynamics. That's my qualification for the presidency.” Araya Diaz/Getty Images Williamson suggests that reparations for slavery and other socio-economic injustices be paid out in yearly installments of $10 billion over the span of one decade. The funds would be donated to educational and economic projects. "I believe $100 billion given to a council to apply this money to economic projects and educational projects of renewal for that population is a debt to be paid," she added. When asked about her campaign strategy, Williamson said she doesn't have a typical plan. "My strategy is that I seek to speak as deeply, articulately and passionately as I can," she told Berman, "I'm not trying to figure out what to say to get people to vote for me. I'm seeking to have the conversation that I believe we need to be having. These are very serious times. We need to be very serious, deep thinkers." View the full article
  3. G Herbo's "Sacrifice" is the perfect blend of spare brutalism and storytelling. As always, he and 808Mafia's Southside provide their fans with an irksome quality that is equal parts, hard to digest - hard to look away. Their follow-up record Still Swervin, has Pac-like properties to it, in the sense of continuity: once a thug, still a thug. As untouched as he may seem while his playing with his infant child, G Herbo is stubbornly stuck on the stories of his past, and to some extent, the way he views the World today. On "Sacrifice," G Herbo uses incremental flashcards to travel back-and-forth through time. The date of August 10th gets penciled in, unbeknownst to us all, Chicago's 78th neighborhood is mentioned without all the glitz associated with its riverfront remodeling - these are the broad strokes of a rapper whose music is one giant stream undivided. Check out "Sacrifice" and the rest of Still Swervin if you haven't already. 4. A$AP Rocky is on the tail end of his Injured GenerationTour. He has recently announced the production of a movie that seems to chronicle his time on the road. The teaser uploaded to the rapper's Instagram captures some visceral behind-the-scenes action. Watch the clip below. Based on the preview, the movie is set to be a hardcore representation of what goes down during his live performances. The clip features scenes of fans being hauled away from concerts. One guy gets lifted by bodyguards after kicking his way out of a wheelchair in an apparent medical emergency. The fan is taken away in the arms of a couple of strongmen while he screams at the top of his lungs, "I don't care." His fit continues with a repeated phrase: "Nothing will f*cking mean anything." Female fans flashing the crowd are also featured in some censored footage. The visuals are pretty wild and it's only the beginning. A$AP has yet to reveal the movie's release date so stay tuned. 5. Akon is of the opinion that social issues in our modern age, are often-times overly bloated. Take his recent conversation with TMZ as an exception or an example if you will. If the decision went down to the wire, with a choice to either boycott the NFL in support of Colin Kaepernick, or perform the Halftime show during the Super Bowl, Akon would pick the latter - but not because he lacks in compassion for the social causes of Black Americans. When asked to touch on the delicate issue, Akon seemed more than willing to speak frankly. His belief is that a Super Bowl halftime spot is just too big a stage to pass up. So, on a bilateral level, from a Pro-Black standpoint, it would be wiser "to play ball" with NFL and work internally, rather than go to war with the establishment. Akon breaks it down in two measures: impact, and of utmost importance to him, "the business of it," it being the exposure that comes with the Super Bowl nod. Akon's opinion is as critically needed as it is contentious, but bear in mind: the tension of opposites makes the World go 'round. One thing to note, Akon's philanthropy is mostly centered on his Pan-African beliefs. Travis Scott, who performs tonight with Maroon 5 in the highly sought-after Halftime slot, has received a fair share of criticism for accepting the NFL's offer. With all that said, what do you make of Akon's two-fold idea? - comment below. View the full article
  6. As the story goes, Bow Wow and a woman named "Leslie Holden" were incidentally booked on matching assault & battery charges when cops couldn't suss who did what in their dispute. Those "in the know" were probably able to remark on the similarity between the names "Leslie Holden" and Kiyomi Leslie, who just so happens to be Bow Wow's on again, off again girlfriend. Yes, they are the same person, as Bow Wow's reps have confirmed. His reps spoke with the Shade Room to confirm Bow Wow's release bond, but also to set the record straight: they want us to believe Kiyomi was the main aggressor in their violent altercation. Without much insight into the matter, social media has come to Bow Wow's defense on the basis of a crude "double standard" on domestic violence. A statement written by his legal team is also making the rounds - which states that Leslie beat him with a lamp, bit him, and spat on him, while he tried in vain to maintain order. Since been properly identified by the press, Kiyomi has been granted the same bond as her ex, as confirmed by the Fulton County Magistrate. “Both were able to go before a Fulton County Magistrate Judge who granted the defendants $8,000 signature bonds," a statement read from the local jurors. If you are at all curious, TMZ has obtained mugshots for both Kiyomi and Bow Wow (right here) - notice how the former So So Def rapper has several nicks on his forehead. This is certainly not the least we hear from Kiyomi Leslie, or "Leslie Holden" as the court clerks have her registered. View the full article
  7. As is generally the custom, the NFL announced its class of award winners a day before the Super Bowl goes to a coin flip. This year, the biggest honors went to Kansas Chiefs' quarterback Patrick Mahomes, fresh off a season of historical proportions, as he became just the second player ever to throw 50 touchdown scores over 5,000 yards in a single term. His 41 first-place votes easily bested Drew Brees, who earned a respectable 9 votes to place a distant second. The freshly-minted MVP was on hand to accept his award, at the NFL Honors gala celebrating the year that was. Unsurprisingly, a few of the players suiting up this evening were awarded something or other. The Rams' Aaron Donald took home the AP Defensive Player of the Year award, while his teammates over on the other unit grabbed the Built Ford Tough Offensive Line of the Year award. 9. According to new numbers pulled by Nielsen music, Cardi has now notched her third No. 1 atop the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart with her "Money" single after experiencing a jump of 9 percent, reaching an audience of 29.7 million listeners. Previously, Cardi occupied No. for her "Bodak Yellow" breakout and her role in G-Eazy and A$AP Rocky's "No Limit" cut. While the former held on for 10 weeks straight, the latter clocked in at No. for six weeks. "Money" now plays a role in the culmination of Cardi's top 10 singles on the chart which are now tallied at ten tracks total. Rounding it to the figure is also Cardi's part in Pardison Fontaine "Backin' It Up," which lands at No. 9 this week after a jump of 11 percent. For Pardi, it's the New York songwriter and rapperr's first visit to the top 10 as a front-facing artist. "Money" also makes the leap to No. 1 on the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop chart, becoming the most played track on R&B/hip-hop radio stations, confirming her for a fifth No. 1 on that chart. "Backin It Up" also moves to No.6 on the same chart after locking in a 12 percent boost in plays. Next up, eyes will be set to see if Cardi is keen on recreating the same magic that granted her such a successful 2018 as we await her sophomore outing. View the full article
  10. Most recently, Montreal shared a new clip pulled from a sit-down with Trippie Redd in which the rapper previewed an unreleased track, titled "Be Yourself. " while labeled as a freestyle, the video seems to point toward a simple a capella rendition of Trippe's "Be Yourself" song. While unreleased, a studio snippet of the song did surface online earlier in the year. This new clip serves as an extension of that leak as Trippie seems to perform the track in its entirety while backstage at his last performance at Rolling Loud. The subject matter on "Be Yourself" doesn't vary much from Trippie's regularly scheduled program as he resorts to melodic delivery of lines that reflect both self and one's surrounding environment: "I spoke to god yesterday and I told him "save me"/Think its the rapture today and I told him "take me"/I empty clips on niggas don’t know bout safeties/I got him clutching and shaking like they got rabies." So far, Trippie offers no update on the whereabouts of the "Be Yourself" track and has been MIA for some days now as far as social media is concerned. His most recent appearance was at the Super Bowl Music Festival Saturday night in Atlanta, gracing the stage alongside the likes of Bruno Mars and fellow QC management mate Cardi B. 11. Last year, K. Forest shared his Forest Fire II outing, a direct follow up to his debut project and an honest indication of the consistency that the Canadian singer has managed to maintain over the years. Now, after a brief hiatus during the last part of 2018, hopping behind the scenes for work with the likes of Baka, he gets ready to usher in the arrival of a new full-length project. With that in mind, K has delivered on a pair of singles with his "Fall Back Gang/Love Worth Having" EP. The pair of selections is K at his finest, shedding flowery language and gliding over minimal production, courtesy of collaborator dF, to share tales of love and loss, vacillating between the decision to focus on his music rather than a lover and the contrasting choice to hone in on romance. 12. Cautious Clay is coming off a stellar showing in 2018, having earned notable looks on NPR's Tiny Desk platform and gracing the coveted Insecure soundtrack. He dropped off his Blood Type effort last year as well and as we settle into 2019, Clay is prepping the arrival of his follow-up Table Of Context output. But just before that arrives, the Brooklyn-bred singer has joined forces with producer Medasin for his latest offering, "HONEST ENOUGH." On it, Cautious Clay's signature delicate delivery interlaces with the LA producer's work behind the boards for a solid cut that points toward something worth anticipating when it comes to Table Of Context. As we await the project, Cautious Clay is making his rounds as he wraps up a tour through Europe and a few US cities, including NYC and Boston. 14. As if on cue, just days before the Super Bowl kicked off in Atlanta on Sunday, the building that was home to an iconic mural of Colin Kaepernick in Atlanta has been demolished. The mural was painted on a building that sits directly across from the city's Morehouse College, an all-male historically black school, but on Friday afternoon (February 1st) it was demolished just as a reported hundreds of thousands migrated to Atlanta for Super Bowl weekend. A.R. Shaw/Steed Media The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that a fire took place inside the edifice six months prior. Nevertheless, the mural still remained. According to mural painter Fabian Williams, the building's owner never had any complaints about the artwork. He said he liked it,” Williams tells the AJC. “But said that the city was complaining to him about it.” Williams also revealed that he had plans to return to the mural on Saturday to work on a few touch ups, adding that the decision to destroy the mural at this time did strike a chord. "I figured at some point they would tear the building down, but it has been sitting up this whole time,” Williams added. “The fact that the Super Bowl happens here and the weekend when the festivities are gearing up, the building gets demolished is very odd.” View the full article
  15. Cardi B most recently decided to open up some more about her reservations when she ended up turning down the opportunity to perform during the Super Bowl halftime set. On Sunday, fans can expect to watch Travis Scott, Maroon 5 and Big Boi take the stage for the iconic halftime performance, but before these acts became the Super Bowl's headliners, Cardi B was among several of the acts who passe don the NFL's proposition. In an interview with the Associated Press, Cardi admitted that she had "mixed feelings" about turning it down due to the amount of money that was involved, but in consideration of Colin Kaepernick's decision to stand by beliefs and kneel in honor of his community, she felt it was necessary to stand behind him. She even added that Offset would not be going to the Super Bowl despite his affinity for the sport of football in showing of solidarity for Kaepernick as well. Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for Pepsi "My husband, he loves football,” she says. “His kids play football. It’s really hard for him. He really wants to go to the Super Bowl, but he can’t go to the Super Bowl, because he’s got to stand for something [...] You have to sacrifice that. I got to sacrifice a lot of money to perform. But there’s a man who sacrificed his job for us, so we got to stand behind him.” Despite her decision to sit the Super Bowl out, Cardi B has still managed to collect her check on various opportunities directly related to the Super Bowl, including an appearance in the Pepsi Super Bowl commercial while also headlining several events including Bud Light's official Super Bowl Music Festival. Her decision to partake in such gigs has brought up the legitimacy of her support of Kaepernick among critics and in the same interview, she addressed such concerns as well, “I hear people saying like ‘Oh, y’all are saying all this stuff about the Super Bowl, but you’re doing all these parties,’” she said. “And it’s like, well, if the NFL could benefit off from us, then I’m going to benefit off y’all. Y’all make the most money off our people. Why am I not going to take advantage of y’all and take money from y’all too? Because of y’all, we are getting these parties. 16. As promised, Nicki Minaj delivered on new music with the arrival of her latest Queen Radio episode on Beats 1. Decidedly, Nicki took on two smashes from a set of duos in hip-hop, grabbing Drake and Meek Mill's "Going Bad" and Lil Baby and Gunna's "Drip Too Hard" hit, the latter of which is featured here. Just as she does on "Going Bad," Nicki adopts the cadence of the cut's originators as she laces the song with her own flavor as she raps, "Drip too hard, got his dick too hard/He gon' fuck around and drown off this wave/Pretty little toes, stuntin' on these hoes/Buy another bag soon as I get paid." Take a listen to the new flip courtesy of Nicki Minaj and sound off with your thoughts down below. Does she do the song justice or should she have left it alone? View the full article
  17. Nicki Minaj's Queen Radio broadcast returned to the Beats 1 platform on Saturday and prior to going live, the emcee assured fans that they would be getting new music with its arrival. While many were awaiting something along the lines of new original tracks, Nick decided to put her own spin on things when she arrived with two remixes to tracks that have been dominating playlists as of late, Drake and Meek Mill's "Going Bad" and Lil Baby and Gunna's "Drip Too Hard." On "Going Bad," Nicki begins with a cadence that mimics Drizzy's on the track as she begins with references to her boyfriends "Onika" neck tattoo and her success in breaking Aretha Franklin's Billboard record. Naturally, the flip caused the most uproar out of the two with Nicki allegedly dissing Drake in her most recent "Hard White" music video as she is seen destroying a small scorpion onscreen. 18. Months after dropping his debut Platinum Fire album, Arin ray closed out 2018 with a deluxe edition of the project, adding three new selections to the mix and most recently, the Los Angeles-based crooner shared a new clip for deluxe add-on "Reckless." In the video, Ray calls on his inner Hugh Hefner as he rides around and partying with a thick throng of women at his beck and call. It kind of reflects more," Ray tells Complex of the new clip. "I'm not wild, but just fun. I see the video as fun and having a good time. I think it shows a different side of me than when I go out not in front of too many people—when I'm with my friends, or say, a house party. It's not something I do every day, but if I go out, go to a party and let loose, have a couple of drinks, you might see that energy out of me." View the full article
  19. This week, Diggy Simmons made some noise when the emcee took to Instagram to upload a classic car freestyle, packed the brim with nothing but lyrical prowess over Jay-Z's "Who You Wit II" track. It was a clear shot at reminding us of just how talented the offspring of Rev Run is. Turns out, the freestyle doubled as a maneuver into Simmons's latest, a new video for his "Anchors" track. The song can originally be found on Diggy's Lighten Up effort, which arrived late last year. Keeping the aesthetic that the XXL Freshman Class alum has been boasting as of late, the "Anchors" selection features a nostalgic backdrop captured by director HDTay. If in search for proof of Diggy's lyricism, "Anchors" is it. Over a backdrop composed of musically rich elements, but no drums, Diggy goes on a calm assault with relaxed yet calculated delivery: "Still again, niggas empty-minded gotta fill em in/Either with a bullet or a busy pen." 20. Last year, Oakland-bred emcee Elujay made a considerable shift when he decided to wholly introduce listeners to a more soulful and melodic side of his artistry, effectively transitioning from the role of emcee to a newfound title of crooner. Dropping off funk-filled bops such as "Starchild" and "Litle Thangs," fans awaited what has come to be the first full-length output of this shift in sound in the form of Adojio. Equipped with seven tracks total, the Adojio EP features the previsouly-released singles "Starchild" and "Blu," but passes on cuts like "Locked In" and "Little Thangs." Previously, Elujay's full-length album was tentatively-titled OdysseyofSelf. 21. Yes, you read correctly. In a simple tweet, the TrapHouse Jazz originator, Masego, took to the Internet to reveal what may very well be a pending record featuring himself, Smino and Denzel Curry. It was when a fan uploaded an old clip of Masego andSmino on Instagram Live together some time ago that Uncle Sego was prompted to add, "and this was the beginning of the @smino x Masego x @denzelcurry record." In the video in question, Smino is seen waking Masego up from a bit of slumber at the hotel where they are staying, Smino taunts Sego for a bit before instructing him to come to join him and a host of others in his suite. "Everybody in my room [...] Denzel in there, too," he says. Naturally, such a collaboration would be one highly-anticipated joint. All three artists have established themselves as prime voices for listeners beyond mainstream channels and they each boast a unique and perfected sound that, when combined, could very well prove to give us the track we didn't know we needed. Other than that, Masego doesn't reveal much else, leaving up the possiblities to our own imaginations. The new track would follow up on a pretty solid year for all three men, who all dropped off individual projects in 2018 with Masego's Lady Lady, Smino's NOIR, and Curry's Clout Cobain. 22. It's safe to say, Ja Rule's approval rating might be at the lowest point since 50 Cent's "Wanksta" came out. With the release of two documentaries centered around the Fyre Festival fiasco, on Hulu and Netflix respectively. True to form, his immediate reaction to both releases was to differentiate his actions from the perils of Billy McFarland and to a lesser extent Jerry Media. But in the grand scheme of things, the general public isn't ready to allow Ja Rule safe passage back to the "good side." In fact, Ja Rule's own fans let him have it, at a New Jersey concert last night. Keep in mind, these Ja Rule fans paid for their tickets with their own hard-earned cash - and it was Ja himself who incited the crowd to turn against him. Maybe a seldom-revealed part of himself is full of remorse over the Fyre Fest fiasco, maybe not.. At a certain point in the concert, Ja Rule couldn't make out whether the riled-up crowd was in good spirits or mad as hell - so naturally, he presumed the worst. After insinuating that concert-goers "might be a little mad" over the Fyre Fest claims, Ja launched into a really ill-conceived call and response session. "I want y’all to repeat after me,” he said with his middle finger pointed in the air. "And let me he hear you say, 'Fuck you, Ja Rule.'" And you bet your bottom dollar, the concert-goers complied. Some things are stranger than fiction; Ja Rule's concert last night might just be exhibit A. View the full article
  23. The Game had some choice words to describe his relationship with Kanye West's wife. In 2016, he revealed that he had entertained sexual relationships with three women of the Kardashian clan. Last week, a leak of an upcoming track included some harsh bars about Kim Kardashian, earning the artist some criticism. He has yet to back down, despite the backlash. In what seems to be a response to the criticism, the rapper took to Instagram to clarify his intentions. "Lotta foul sh*t going on in this industry will be exposed #BornToRap," he wrote in his IG stories. "They are not who they say they are." In the infamous track's leak, The Game raps: “I held Kim Kardashian by her throat, n**ga! I made her swallow my kids until she choked, n**ga!/ I should apologize cuz ‘Ye my folks, n**ga!...” Looks like his next project is set to highlight other targets. The Game is only getting started. A week after those Kim K lyrics stunned the public, DJ Akademiks came through saying that The Game was taking aim at Joe Budden next. The former Slaughter House rapper put The Game on blast after he caught wind of his plans. View the full article
  24. DJ Akademiks fell into the role of a clairvoyant yesterday, in providing details pertaining to who and what The Game speaks on in the song leak that surfaced last week. Just to catch you up, footage from a listening session at The Game's reached the masses. In the video, The Game and his constituents can be seen nodding along to a song that makes reference to an alleged bedroom romp with Kim Kardashian. Well, according to Akademik's Kim isn't the lone celeb The Game puts on blast (on that record). Believe it or not, actress Cyn Santana, who also happens to be Joe Budden's fiancée, ends up on the receiving end, as do countless other women. Even Akademik's was forced to admit, the record was done in poor taste, regardless of whether it makes the final cut. And so it goes: Joe Budden received word in such a timely manner, that it allowed him the chance to touch on the issue with co-hosts Rory & Mal on the 218th episode of his eponymously-titled podcast. To start things off, Joe Budden gave his account of the longstanding animosity with The Game, which started way back - when they were both baby-faced rappers-in-trade. From there, Joe Budden proceeded to audit every bit of The Game's character, persona, and values in an in-depth "character assassination," never once referring to him by his artist's moniker, but his given name of Jayceon. "The more I sat and thought about this, the more I said to myself, 'n*gga, so what?' What type of loser, face-ass n***a is you, n***a?" Budden says emphatically during the episode. "I don't give two fucks about what anyone did before I was involved with them. To me, that's more loser shit." "You didn't say it to me. You said it in a song. And you can call me Game," Budden continued, before finding a simpler explanation for all the fuss. "You talking about my girl with a girl name. Watch your fucking mouth, man." The full-diatribe begins at the 1-hour mark of the podcast, which you can stream below. Although Joe Budden is all but prepared to use his fists in defense of his wife-to-be, the rapper-turned-podcaster thinks The Game is nothing more than a cheap shot artist - his rationale being: if The Game had a hot song in rotation he probably wouldn't resort to such lows. 25. Rachel True starred in a 90's film entitled The Craft, alongside Neve Campbell, Fariuza Balk, and Robin Tunney. The cult classic was released in 1996 and since then, its stars have been indulging fans during appearances at Sci-Fi conventions and the like. The strange part lies in the fact that Rachel True has never actually been invited to attend these events with her colleagues, even though the part she played in the flic bore as much weight as theirs. True's tolerance for the flagrant exclusion recently reached a boiling point prompting the actress to put these conventions on blast via social media. She took to Twitter to inform her following of the reason why they have yet to see her amongst her peers. "I think it’s interesting these conventions are booking Neve, Fairuza &, Robin all together, but excluding me. Sounds about white," she wrote."Kinda like the press junkets back in the day for the film." She later recalled another scenario from which she was excluded: "This thread just made me rem the shitty feeling of watching the other 3 girls present that yr at the MTV movie awards while I sat in the audience despite having 2 movies coming out. These things aren’t the worst to suffer, but accumulated over the years are exhausting." Her call out has paid off since all four cast members are now set to appear together at the Monster Mania convention in March. View the full article
