1. Rodney King, who will always be remembered as the man who set off a chain of events leading to the 1992 Los Angeles Riots, was found dead in his California home on Sunday at the age of 47. Although King's own foray into music was short-lived, his unfortunate experience resonated across the country and clearly affected the content of legendary hip-hop albums like Ice Cube's The Predator. King was brutally beaten during a 1991 traffic stop in Los Angeles, during which he was struck more than 50 times by four white officers, who were later accused of using racial slurs during the attack. Footage of the incident eventually made its way to TV, sparking public outcry. The controversial outcome of the trial led to a series of deadly riots and looting in the city that claimed 50 lives and cost approximately $1 billion in damages. According to CNN, King was found dead on Sunday morning, after his fiancée Cynthia Kelly placed a 911 call to the Rialto, California, police at approximately 5:25 a.m. When officers arrived at the scene, King's body was at the bottom of a pool; he was confirmed dead at a nearby hospital. Captain Randy DeAnda told reporters that police would investigate the crime as a drowning, and added that there were no obvious signs of foul play at the scene or suspicious injuries to the victim's body. "His fiancée heard him in the rear yard," DeAnda said describing the events before Kelly placed the 911 call. (Kelly met King while serving as a juror in his 1994 lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles.) Even after the L.A. riots had ended, King's beating continued to send shockwaves across the nation, thanks to the clear picture of the racially motivated police brutality that captured in the taped footage. In 1993, the accused officers stood trial, this time in federal court, and two were sentenced to 30 months in prison, while two other were acquitted. King, who brought his own lawsuit against the city, received $3.8 million in damages. Strangely enough, in 2011 was King was ticketed for a minor traffic violation on the 20th anniversary of the beating. Besides that, the Californian also attempted to pursue a career in music, using some of his settlement money to launch it. Four years ago, King appeared on VH1's "Celebrity Rehab," where he was open about his battle with alcohol. The impact of King's beating on the state of race in America can be heard across classic hip-hop albums like Ice Cube's The Predator and Dr. Dre's The Chronic, which captured the racial tension in Los Angeles at the time. On his single, "Who Got the Camera?" Cude made direct reference to the beating, by telling a realistic story of being assaulted by the police after being pulled over. 2. After a few days of making headlines for his fight with Chris Brown's entourage, Drake got back to the music on Saturday night, hitting the Nikon Theater in Jones Beach for his Club Paradise tour. In addition to his usual lineup, he along brought along a few surprises in the form of The Weeknd, Busta Rhymes, A$AP Rocky and Dipset. Following opening sets from French Montana, 2 Chainz, Meek Mill, Waka Flocka Flame and J. Cole, Drake kicked things off with his Take Care tracks "Lord Knows" and "Underground Kings." He formally introduced his crowd to the "greatest club in the world," and assured them that no afterparty could measure up to what he had in store for the night, since he'd brought out "every single n---a that you wanna hear." Cue "Crew Love" and an appearance from Drizzy's Toronto pal the Weeknd, who momentarily sent the crowd into a frenzy, as the first in a chain of surprise guests. In addition to summoning Waka, Meek, 2 Chainz and French Montana back to the stage for features, Drake also brought out his Cash Money labelmate Busta Rhymes to perform the throwback "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See" plus A$AP Rocky and his mob to perform "Pretty Flacko." It wasn't until Drake performed his soul-baring single "Marvin's Room" that he finally made a blatant reference to the controversy surrounding the Chris Brown incident. He told the audience that he was in a great mood, despite the last few nights being difficult. Once he got that off his chest, he continued the show with an appearance from Jamaican dancehall star Mavado, who performed his own single "I'm So Special." Despite earlier rumors that Drake might be arrested before the end of the night, the YMCMB rapper was calm and cool, focused only on delivering a night to remember. He saved his biggest stunt for the final minutes of the show, bringing Jim Jones onstage to perform his hit "We Fly High," followed by Juelz Santana with "Dipset (Santana's Town)" and finally, Cam'ron. If having A$AP's crew on the bill wasn't enough shine for Harlem, Drake managed to get all three members of Dipset on stage with him for a memorable moment as they performed "Salute." While details are still being revealed about the club altercation Wednesday night, Drake did his best to brush off the drama and stay focused on the music. This weekend, MTV News caught up with Cash Money CEO Birdman in Atlanta, where he threw his full support behind Drake. "To me, Drizzy ain't did nothin' wrong, he ain't done nothin' wrong to nobody," Birdman said. "He just doin' great music. He's not a reckless guy out there just wildin' out; he's a humble kid makin' great music." 7. By Rob Markman, with reporting by FLX Chief Keef already told you what he don't like, but Interscope Records, that's that sh-- he do like. On Saturday (June 16) just hours before he took the stage at Birthday Bash with T.I. the Chicago upstart inked a deal with Jimmy Iovine's label and gave RapFix the exclusive. "I've been talkin' to a lot of labels, but I just noticed that Interscope got people like 50, Eminem," Keef told us after he got off stage performing his breakout track, "I Don't Like." The teenage spitter also revealed that he signed a publishing deal with Dr. Dre. Keef was recruited by a few labels including Cash Money and T.I.'s Grand Hustle. "I like him, he kinda remind me of us," Baby told MTV News back in May. "[He's] out the streets, I think he swagged up and I'm definitely talkin' to his peopleand i'd like to see if we could get it to pop, see if I can get him to be down with the team." During that same month Kanye West remixed Keef's "I Don't Like" along with Pusha T, Jadakiss and Big Sean. Bad Boy and Def Jam were also rumored to have approached the young rapper. With all of the interest he drew in the end chose the Scope. "They was talkin' good to me," he said of Interscope. "They was talkin' like I was talkin' and I liked that. All these other labels, I was talkin' to 'em, but it's time anyway for me and I'm goin' with Interscope." 8. By Rob Markman Atlanta's Hot 107.9 radio station threw their 17th annual Birthday Bash on Saturday night with a blow out line up at Philips Arena that included Gucci Mane, Rick Ross, Usher, Lil Wayne and T.I.. The five-hour bash started as new southern staples like Cash Out, Travis Porter and Future pumped up the crowd alongside beloved veterans Lil Jon, Pastor Troy, Crime Mob, Lil Scrappy, Rocko and Gucci Mane. Each set seemingly outdid the one that preceded it. After Future built the crowd into a frenzy with his catalog of hits ("Tony Montana," "Same Damn Time" and "Turn on the Lights"), Rick Ross stormed the stage as energetic as ever. The MMG big man bounced up and down and controlled both the entire arena running through power tracks like "I'ma Boss," "9 Piece" and "Bag of Money." While all opening acts were appreciated, none were greeted quite like the King of the South. At 10:15 p.m., T.I. took the stage while his live band riffed the opening chords to his 2010 single "I'm Back." It was all very fitting considering it's been a few years since Tip graced the stage which has made him royalty in his native city. "A-Town what's happenin'? I'd like to welcome y'all to my Birthday Bash," T.I. said. Tip dug deep into his discography reciting tracks like "Rubberband Man" and "24s." The Trap Muzik MC set the tone with street bangers before catering to the ladies with "Love This Life" and "Whatever You Like." Immediately after, T.I. began to parade out his long list of multiplatinum friends. "It was a good 30 mil, maybe 50; maybe 50 mil," Tip told MTV News after the show trying to estimate the amount of collective records sold between all of his specially invited guests. First there was Usher, who sang his current smash "Climax" and then came Nelly, who along with Kelly Rowland performed his 2002 single "Dilemma." Nelly exited the stage and left Kelly to rock her #1 single "Motivation." Halfway through her tune, Lil Wayne skated out onto the stage rapping his guest verse. The Destiny's Child singer then turned the stage over to the YMCMB boss, who rocked a number of his own hits like "Bill Gates" and "John." T.I. could've stopped there but then took his stage back proving that he could've easily performed without any help. Tip went solo for a few spitting "Swagga Like Us" and "Bring 'em Out" and then once again played the gracious host inviting out newcomer Chief Keef and ATL veteran Young Jeezy."All these people I called, these are personal acquaintances of mine, these are not people I call just because they have hit records," T.I. told us. At the end of T.I.'s set, which ran over an hour, there was only one song left to sing. As the opening chords for "Live Your Life" rang through Philips Arena, fireworks shot through the air and gold confetti fell from the rafters. 9. All parties that were involuntarily roped into the brawl between Drake and Chris Brown's entourages are suffering the consequences. W.I.P., the New York City club where the incident took place, was shut down on Saturday night for code violations AP reports. Details on the violation have not been disclosed, but the venue has come under scrutiny over the past few days after several patrons were injured in the brief battle. A spokesperson for the New York nightclub W.i.P. told MTV News on Friday (June 15) that club management had turned over to police investigators video footage of the melee between the entourages of Chris Brown and Drake. An NYPD spokesperson confirmed that the videotape had been turned over and that police were reviewing it as part of their investigation. At press time the police would not give any further details about the findings, but TMZ reported earlier in the day that Brown had given a statement to police and that his lawyer had handed over unspecified "physical evidence" that allegedly implicates Drake in the fight. Drake's reps had also reportedly spoken to investigators, but the NYPD spokesperson declined to specify who had come forward so far, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. The W.i.P spokesperson also cautioned that a widely circulated video labeled as footage of the fight is actually an unrelated clip shot in a different club in New Jersey. And while some sources have claimed that the fight was not over the men's mutual history with Rihanna, an unnamed source told Us Magazine that the "We Found Love" singer "loves" the suggestion that she was the cause. "Men fighting over her? Are you kidding? Of course. [She] loves the drama," the source said. Radar Online reported on Friday (June 15) that Rihanna consoled Brown on Thursday night at Jay-Z's 40/40 club in New York all night and, "it was clear that she loved the attention he was giving her ... those two have a thing for each other that will never die, no matter what, and they're on their way to really being back together. Chris just adores her. And she tended to him, making sure the gash on his chin from the fight was OK." The site also reported that Brown needed eight stitches to close up the wound on his chin and had to get a tetanus shot as well. His bodyguard, Big Pat, reportedly needed 20 stitches to close up the wound on his head and also received a tetanus shot, while Brown's girlfriend, Karrueche Tran, sustained minor cuts and had some glass fragments removed from her skin. TMZ added that NBA player Tony Parker suffered a serious eye injury during the bottle blitz. "I was there with a bunch of friends when the fight broke out," he said. "They started to throw bottles about. I got it all .. the cornea has been touched. I can't do anything for seven days. But I was lucky. The injury won't prevent me from competing in the Olympics in any way." The star San Antonio Spurs point guard will represent his native France in the summer games. A person who was reportedly at the club on the night of the melee said it was sparked when a member of Drake's entourage threw a bottle at Brown's crew, but that "Chris and Drake never got in each other's faces ... it was entourage versus entourage, never Drake versus Chris." Nobody seems to want to go on the record, but several anonymous witnesses also reportedly told TMZ that a member of Brown's 16-member crew, "was throwing gang signs and screaming at Drake's table." Witnesses pegged that dreadlocked man as the "primary instigator" of the brawl, claiming he verbally taunted Drake's table and yelled out, "somebody's gonna die." He also later allegedly threatened rapper Meek Mill, saying, "F--- you, we're gonna kill you n---a." As this was going on, Brown is reported to have stood up and embraced the dreadlocked friend. If the purported gang signs were indeed thrown and are on the videotape being reviewed by police, TMZ reported that it could spell trouble for Brown, whose five years of probation from his felony assault conviction on Rihanna stipulates that he cannot associate with gang members. In another bit of potential fall-out from the scuffle, TMZ noted that the New York City Council is holding an emergency meeting with nightclub owners to discuss whether bottle service policies should be changed in the wake of the fight. "I am deeply concerned by reports of the bottle throwing melee that injured more than five people in SoHo this week," said City Council speaker Christine Quinn in a statement. "That is why I have immediately convened an emergency meeting next week between my office, the NYPD, and the nightlife industry ... The purpose of this meeting is to send a clear message to all nightclub patrons that bottles cannot be used as weapons and to determine if the guidelines surrounding bottle service need to be updated or reworked." A number of photos have been posted online showing the purported aftermath of the bottle blitz, depicting the floor of the club awash in broken glass. 10. Starting two years ago, hundreds of thousands of BitTorrent users who allegedly shared films without the consent of copyright holders have been dragged to court in the US. The aim of the copyright holders, or copyright trolls, is never to take any of the cases to trial. Instead they want alleged infringers to pay a substantial cash settlement to make legal action go away. Some equal this scheme to extortion, but the copyright holders say they are merely protecting their work. One of the most active law firms engaged in these mass-BitTorrent lawsuits is Prenda Law. The firm has filed numerous lawsuits on behalf of adult entertainment companies and is frequently accused of harassment-like practices once they obtain the identity of account holders. For example, the firm is known to call accused BitTorrent pirates at their homes, urging them to pay up. Starting last week, however, these ‘live’ phone calls we replaced by so-called robocalls. Instead of a real person, the accused now hear a previously recorded message. While these calls may be cheap and effective, the way they are carried out by Prenda Law raises all sorts of question. A transcript of the call was posted online by DTD and reads as follows. Note that the call suggests that the defendant is working for the law firm. “This is [accused name] with Prenda Law. With our clients offer to settle being expired now for more than 30 days it is pretty clear to them that you don’t plan to enter into a settlement agreement with them which is fine. This call is to inform you that we are going to start the process of filing a lawsuit with your name in it.” “At first, you will receive time sensitive documents. We have found that most people do have an attorney review them. If you would like to get an idea of what the complaint will look like just go to our website www{.}wefightpiracy{.}com. We do have some of our recent filings there. If you have any questions give us a call. We can be reached at 305-748-2102 and your reference number is xxxx.” An interesting technique, but also one that might actually be against the law, as Sophisticated Jane Doe points out. For example, while robocalls are allowed in some states, they are not in others. Perhaps more worryingly is the suggestion that Prenda Law is targeting their entire database of defendants with these calls. This means that defendants whose cases have been dismissed (even with prejudice) are contacted as well. The same is true for those defendants who already hired a lawyer. Directly contacting a defendant who’s represented by an attorney is frowned upon, to say the least. The above shows that the law firms retained by copyright holders can go to extremes to get their settlement fees. In recent months several judges realized this. For example, in the Eastern District of New York they are advised to throw these cases out because they’re a “waste of judicial resources”. In other cases we’ve seen that judges specifically state that ISPs can’t reveal telephone numbers of account holders. The law firms, however, are smart enough to evade jurisdictions where they are not welcome. And as long as they can convince alleged pirates to settle, through robocalls or not, they will continue business as usual. 22. After the shutdown of Megaupload, Hollywood was quick to point its finger at other “rogue” sites, such as US-based cloud storage service Mediafire. The irony is that while the movie companies claim these sites are destroying their business, a majority of corporate employees depend on them. This widespread legitimate use also applied to Megaupload. Founder Kim Dotcom told us last year that movie industry insiders and employees at the world’s top corporations were all using the service. “Among our 180 million users is a large number of celebrities, musicians, film makers, actors, etc. and they love Mega. We have hundreds of premium accounts from employees of the companies the RIAA and MPAA represent. In fact 87% of the fortune 500 companies have premium accounts with us,” Dotcom said. While the numbers above say little about the legitimacy of the files being shared by these users, a new survey reveals that it is common for employees today to use file-sharing sites (e.g. cyberlockers) to share and store work-related documents. The survey conducted by Skydox polled the use of free file-sharing sites among 4,119 workers at companies in the U.S. and U.K. Two-thirds (66%) of the employees admitted to using free file-sharing sites for work. Among these ‘sharers” 45% said their IT departments are aware of their usage of these services. A breakdown of the result in different work sectors shows that file-sharing services are most used among employees in professional services (87%), closely followed by financial services (84%). Health care (57%), the creative sectors (55%) and government employees (54%) score below average. The above doesn’t only emphasize the huge legitimate potential of cyberlockers. The widespread use of these services in the work setting also sheds a new light on the ongoing fight of Megaupload users to get their files back. This week the EFF argued in court that the U.S. Government disadvantaged many former Megaupload users by shutting the site down without warning. By seizing the servers, they deprived millions of users access to their files. The EFF is supported by retired Judge Abraham David Sofaer who is very critical of the Government’s actions. “It’s really quite outrageous, frankly,” Sofaer told Threat Level in an interview this week. “I was thinking the government hadn’t learned to be discreet in its conduct in the digital world. This is a perfect example on how they are failing to apply traditional standards in the new context.” Ignorance might play a role here. Judging from previous criminal investigations the U.S. Government is relying heavily on how the copyright holders portray certain websites. It wouldn’t be a surprise if the investigators were simply unaware of the many legitimate users, including thousands of government workers. 23. By Rob Markman We already know Machine Gun Kelly is a wild boy, but now the Cleveland, Ohio rapper's bad boy rep may cost him. Not only is MGK being sued by a club bouncer, Kellz may also be facing a ban at New York City's Highline Ballroom where he is scheduled to perform Sunday night with Tech N9ne. Kelly said because of his reputation New York City police were restricting him from taking the stage tomorrow night. RapFix reached out to an MGK rep who confirmed that Highline brass has communicated to them that because of MGK's January arrest after a fight in a Florida club and because of the recent Drake/Chris Brown drama in NYC the NYPD has urged the venue to keep Kelly off the stage on Sunday. The rep pointed out that the rapper has performed twice at the Highline without incident. Kelly is extremely disappointed about missing out on tomorrow night's show. After he left the radio station this afternoon the Bad Boy rapper took to Twitter to vent his frustration. "PSA: the NYPD have banned me from tomorrows show at the [Highline] Ballroom. I've been wrongfully stereotyped because of a bullish-- story," he wrote. "Tired of being judged for false sh--! I rap my ass off, I leave my heart on the stage and I'm fueled by the love for my fans," he continued. "I will be back to give my NY fans the show you deserve!"
