1. Funny how time flies, so goes the saying. Since the late 80s, iconic rap quartet A Tribe Called Quest has captivated Hip Hop listeners who still rabidly debate the merits of the veteran rap group’s second album. Released in September of 1991, The Low End Theory ushered in a more aggressive sound for the crew – going away from the sample loop heavy offerings of their debut People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm. Whereas the preceding album managed to highlight front man Q-Tip as the face of Tribe, Low End was fellow microphone rocker Phife Dawg’s coming out party. With their 1-2 punch solidified in the annals of rap, VH1 caught up with the longtime and formerly feuding rap pals as they reminisced over the creation of what’s considered to be their landmark classic. Joining Tribe in the discussion of their seminal second release are critic and writer Nelson George, journalist Boss Lady, and our own Hip Hop encyclopedia Sway Calloway – who all weigh in with their thoughts on the significance of The Low End Theory. Of course the brothers Tribe offered plenty of insight throughout the two-part VH1 anniversary piece, revealing that aside from the rumored grumblings inspired by their Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels Of A Tribe Called Quest documentary from director Michael Rapaport that the pains of all are slowly being buried. “It was a dope time,” said Q-Tip of the early 90s. “N.W.A. was crushing it, and I just remember being influenced by that, how it sounded sonically.” Q-Tip’s brother-in-arms Phife chimed in with, “We just spoke on how we felt at the moment and it was the truth. We were one of those groups that didn’t have a problem admitting that we cried in front of our mothers.” Head on over to the VH1 Blog site to see all of the interviews and read the rest of the backstory on their classic album by following this link: http://blog.vh1.com/2011-09-29/the-low-end-theory-turns-20/ Is The Low End Theory a classic in your book? 2. Not so fast, says Ray J about the supposed collaboration between him and recently vanquished pro boxer Victor Ortiz. The younger brother of R&B singer and actress Brandy said that a recently leaked track featuring his vocals and the raps of Ortiz never actually happened. The reality TV star and singer also closed the book on the alleged dustup he had with rapper Fabolous at a Floyd Mayweather victory after party in Vegas. As a guest yesterday afternoon (September 29) on Shade 45’s The All Out Show, Ray J spoke on the news bits and is doing his best to move past the Fab situation. “You gotta grow from that," Ray J said. "That was me letting my frustrations take over. Whatever situations happen behind closed doors [we] should have left it at that.” Although gossip site TMZ leaked a song that was supposedly an official offering from Ray J and boxer Victor Ortiz, Ray J said the song was never something he signed off on. “"I don't know how the media even comes up with these crazy stories. We ain't never been in the studio together not one time,” said For The Love Of Ray J star. Ray J is reported to be busy with a new television show and book, although he has yet to go public with the details surrounding his new media projects. What do you think of the latest news on Ray J? Do you think Fabolous is ready to bury the hatchet as well? Tweet to us at @MTVRapFix or leave us a comment below. Sarah Gadon Having been in the industry for more than a decade, Sarah's career is really starting to heat up this year. She's currently in theaters with this week's thriller "Dream House" opposite Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz, for one. She's also taken on the titanic Viggo Mortensen and Michael Fassbender in David Cronenberg's "A Dangerous Method." Oh, and did we mention that she'll be teaming up with Cronenberg again, this time with a "Twilight" twist? That's right, she's Robert Pattinson's leading lady in "Cosmopolis." Keep your fangs at bay until 2012 for that one, though! Shailene Woodley You've mostly seen her on the small screen at this point—weekly, in fact, if you're a regular viewer of ABC Family's "The Secret Life of the American Teenager," which she stars in as reluctant teen mom Amy Juergens. But her big break is just around the corner: Shailene has a starring role opposite George Clooney in Alex Proyas' "The Descendents," the Toronto International Film Festival darling about a man (Clooney) trying desperately to reconnect with his daughters after his wife is seriously injured in a boating accident. Woodley's performance is already soaked in Oscar buzz, so keep an eye out on this project. 20. “Bunraku,” director Guy Moshe’s latest picture, is, as leading man Gackt so eloquently (and confusingly) described to MTV News in an exclusive interview, “a Cowboy meets Samurai meets Mafia action flick. It’s an action-packed movie unlike any other, mixing various genres in the style of Japanese puppetry.” Confusing, yes, but pretty much spot on: no matter how you slice it, “Bunraku” is nothing if not unique. In a future where bullets have been outlawed and hand-to-hand combat has become the primary method of conflict resolution, the ruthless Nicola the Woodcutter (Ron Perlman) rules the world east of the Atlantic with the aid of nine deadly assassins. But Nicola has a target on his back as well: a Drifter (Josh Hartnett) wanders into town with a thirst for whiskey and a hunger for blood, while the samurai Yoshi (Gackt) also comes calling with his sights set on the Woodcutter. Initially adversaries, Yoshi and the Drifter have to put aside their differences if they’re to stand a chance at achieving their quests for vengeance. Check out five reasons why you should see “Bunraku” past the jump. Game On In a lot of ways, “Bunraku” almost feels more like a video game than a movie -- it’s practically criminal that you can only watch and not play. That’s not a knock, mind you: the world of “Bunraku,” populated by flashy characters, bright colors and endless battles that play out like RPG-inspired random encounters, is incredibly rich and detailed; it’s a world that is positively fueled by imagination in its inception, and one that game and action lovers won’t be able to resist immersing themselves in. Side-Scroll There’s no better example of just how video game-esque “Bunraku” is than a sequence at the midpoint of the film where Josh Hartnett’s character, the Drifter, has to break into a prison. The entire scene is one endless battle, with Drifter punching and kicking his way through opponent after opponent, all from an angle that seems ripped straight out of a side-scrolling fighting game; think “Final Fight” meets “Donkey Kong.” It’s just one of the many inventive fight scenes that “Bunraku” executes so well. Hartnett and Gackt But it’s not all about fighting, even if the Drifter insists it is. “Bunraku” would be nothing without its two leads, played with total confidence by Hartnett and Gackt. But it’s not just their individual cool customers that seal the deal: it’s the interplay between the two of them. Reluctant allies are always the most entertaining to watch, and both actors do a great job at keeping both their rivalry and their begrudgingly mutual admiration front and center throughout the film. Killer Number Two No disrespect towards the film’s two heroes, but they’re not the ones who steal the show. That honor goes to Kevin McKidd, who kicks all kinds of ass as the deranged Killer Number Two, lieutenant to Nicola. A man who more than lives up to his name (though not in the juvenile sense, mind you), McKidd’s performance is flashy and flamboyant and dangerous at every turn. And his final scene in the film? It’s a gut-wrencher, no doubt about it. The Final Fight Considering the heavy amount of combat featured in “Bunraku,” the final showdown of the film is certainly... unexpected. It’s not the kind of encounter you’d necessarily predict based on the movie’s momentum, but it works excellently, and provides us with the greatest kill move “Bunraku” has to offer. Director Guy Moshe, Josh Hartnett, Kevin McKidd and Ron Perlman at Jeremy Kenyon Locker Corbell's BUNRAKU Art Experience "Bunraku" is currently playing in select theaters. 21. Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter has become a force of nature outside his notable and long running rap career. The savvy businessman continues to find ways to turn his Hip Hop fortunes into entrepreneurial gold. Branching outside the chase for profit gains, Jay-Z began the Shawn Cater Foundation alongside his mother Gloria in 2002. With the aim of providing assistance to potential college students facing economic hardships, the SC Foundation and Jay-Z sponsored an event last night (September 29) in hopes to raise funds for college scholarships. The Making The Ordinary Extraordinary event was held at the Hudson River Park pier where Jay-Z played host to a bevy of thrill seekers all while drumming up dollars for a worthy cause. The noble and big-hearted gesture from Jay was cemented by comments from the Watch The Throne rapper as he detailed his overall aim for putting the event together. "Just providing opportunity and seeing what people do with that opportunity. If you want to go further and you want to further your education, just giving someone that extra little push [so] that maybe you'll turn out to be someone special," Jay shared with MTV News. The Brooklyn rap vet added, “It's a real grassroots thing that she's been doing on her own, and I'm just really trying to help her expand it so we can help more people. It started out as a Brooklyn thing, and then it started as a New York thing, and now hopefully we can take it to a worldwide thing” The foundation has awarded a reported 750 scholarships over the years, with over 500 college hopefuls taking part of the foundation’s college tours helmed by Jay-Z’s mother.
