NEW YORK (AP) - Howard Stern, surrounded by strippers and cheered by thousands of fans, began promoting his switch to satellite radio Thursday at a rally where he handed out free boom boxes and satellite subscriptions.

"Down with the FCC!" the shock jock told a legion of sign-waving backers. "They have ruined commercial broadcasting."

The fans agreed, screaming "Howard rules!" as their hero addressed the overflow crowd. Stern supporters spilled into the streets surrounding Manhattan's Union Square, stopping noontime traffic throughout the neighborhood.

even though i can't stand him, i wish him the best of luck (for freedom of speech reasons). i found this gem yesterday:

FCC claims right to regulate your PC so make of that what you will (it's NOT good)

my BF said that if this shit goes through, as long as we're over here, they can't do anything to us. but i don't like it anyway.

method, i listened to him in the mid-80s in NYC because of his very irreverent attitude. they called him a 'shock-jock' because his thing was so 'shocking' (to most). but then, all the leering at chicks like jessica hahn (her claim to fame was that she had sex w/this huge pseudo religious nutjob, the kind that got rich off poor people's donations) anyway, HS began having these women on and i just gave up since i'm not a guy--couldn't appreciate him anymore.

I find his programming to be boring and repetitive.

Sometimes he'll have something funny, but most of the time it's the same content. It's mostly sexual dialogue and retarded people being pitted against each other or put in certain situations (Stuttering John, Beetle Juice, some crack head, a few others I forget). He’s also not very bright (I’m sorry to say).

But of course, I’m glad to see his show alive, well, and moving on to a place suited for him. The FCC are a step backward; may they fail at whatever they do.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
