Poll: Artists Don't Influence Political Views

dixiechicks.jpgIn one of the most politically charged election years in U.S. history, the majority of musicians speaking their minds seem energized to vote President George W. Bush out of office. But a number of notable performers are slated to appear at next week's Republican National Convention, bucking the left-leaning industry trend.

Anti-Bush acts are making their case in song, such as those on the "Future Soundtrack for America" (Barsuk) and "Rock Against Bush" (Fat Wreck Chords) compilations. Others will do it on stage through outings like Vote for Change swing state tour, which boasts high-profile artists like Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, the Dixie Chicks, Babyface and John Mellencamp, among many others.

The Repub's lineup includes Faith Hill, ZZ Top, .38 Special and the Charlie Daniels Band. You can watch a video comparing the talent lineup for both conventions at the NY Times Discovery MultiMedia entitled 'Political Points':

Ron Silver, actor and of the most liberally active, switched over to the Republican side and says:

"I'm a 9/11 Republican," he said. "If we don't get this right, all the other things don't matter worth a hill of beans. I'll live to fight another day on health care, environmental concerns and sensible gun legislation. But this is such a predominant issue that it towers above all others, and I'm not certain both parties are capable of handling it the right way"

I would like to be there for the ZZ Top and .38 Special performances. :good job:

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
