I probably shouldn't post in this thread.

Cattle are my parents livelihood. Following the arrival in Canada of a Mennonite who brought the disease with him, the Canadian industry has died. They can't afford to sell animals for 1/3 - 1/4 the usual price and continue on, so like every one else they are just keeping the offspring and holding out hope.

Should I mention the Mennonite was arriving from America? Nobody south of the border seems to want to hear that the single Canadian animal which got infected received the disease from south of the border. It might call into question America's beef industry, but now it doesn't matter anyway, one of the American animals has turned up infected. Again, a single animal.

The Canadian Beef industry is calling for Canadians to stand beside there American counterparts and offer any support possible. Luckily we have a gov't with a little more sense willing to at least block some incoming meat. Our southern neighbor closed their border completely to our meat, and now is starting to try to gain steam on the whole idea that this problem came from Canada.

I'm pissed as hell.

--------

I have no intention of not eating beef. With the glut of extra animals milling about needing food, my parents are about to conk a few to give meat to us and my siblings.

1 animal in each country - - Both of which were found before the meat made its way into the markets. Meat has some of the best regulatory efforts among anything we eat. Eat a cow today.

C.P., I can understand this. I don't make a living in the cattle industry, nor do any of my family. But the Part of West Virginia I live in is big cattle country. Beef mostly. A lot of people aruond here are pissed too. Most of them think it's a load of bullshit! The tendency here is to blame everything on the government. But I'm a beefeater and always will be!!

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
