Arrests Made in 'Half-Life' Game Hacking Case -FBI

Recommended Posts

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Arrests have been made in the theft last year of source code for Valve Software's highly anticipated PC game "Half-Life 2," an FBI spokesman in Seattle said on Thursday.

Details about the arrests, which were made in several countries, were not made public because they are part of an ongoing investigation, FBI spokesman Ray Lauer said.

Valve officials said the online gaming community tracked down the purported hackers within days of the company's announcement last fall that the release of "Half-Life 2" would be delayed because of the Internet break-in.

:good job: :good job:

This arrest was a very good thing!

Those damn bastards that stole that source code caused HL2 to be majorly delayed :reallymad: (as if the game wasn't already delayed enough <_>

I preordered this game at my local software shop early last year and I plan to purchase it when it finally hits the stores.

The Half-Life series just rocks! :good job:

Well that isn't going to bring out HL2 any earlier. That is what I care about. Valve should have kept the source code safer. They should also quit it with the excuses. :reallymad: The internet is like the wild west. That is what makes it so good. You can't then bitch about it when that turns against you.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
