Eric Clapton Guitars

Recommended Posts

guitar.jpgFollowing the legendary sale of Eric Clapton guitars in 1999, Christie's once again offers at auction a group of fine guitars that Clapton describes as the "cream of my collection." Proceeds from the sale are to benefit the Crossroads Centre that Clapton founded in Antigua in 1997.

Highlights include 'Blackie', the unique composite Fender Stratocaster, circa 1956, that Clapton played throughout the early 1970s until the mid 1980s; the 1964 cherry red Gibson ES-335, the second electric guitar he ever bought and the one most associated with his days with Cream; the 1937 Martin, 000-42, used extensively on The 'Unplugged' recording; and the Fender Stratocaster 'Crash 3' designed by famous street artist Crash and the first of Clapton's graffiti guitars to be offered at auction.

Also featured are a group of pre-World War II C.F. Martin & Company guitars; a 12-string guitar co-designed by Clapton in 1969 with renowned guitar maker Tony Zemaitis; and guitars donated by musician friends such as Pete Townshend, Brian May and B.B. King.

Thats a pretty guitar - but is it really worth 100 grand? I used to have one just like except it was a 1956 - white with black pick guard and a rose wood neck with grover tuning pegs - I sure would like it back...

Question:

When and where did the phrase “Clapton is God” originate?

Answer:

The phrase “Clapton is God” originated during Clapton’s tenure with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers (1964 / 1965) when Clapton first rose to prominence in the burgeoning British Blues scene. The phrase was spray painted on a wall in the Underground station in Islington in the mid-60s. Islington is one of the many boroughs of the greater London Area. The graffiti was captured in a now-famous photograph. Helped along by the photo, the legend grew. It is now commonly believed that graffiti proclaiming “Clapton is God” could be seen all over the walls of the London Underground system during the mid- to late-60s. This was definitely not the case.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
