9/11 panel: Basic info not available to NYC rescuers

By Mimi Hall, USA TODAY

NEW YORK — Rescue efforts at the World Trade Center following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks were hindered because police, firefighters and other emergency workers lacked even basic information available on TV, a federal commission reported Tuesday.

In the most detailed accounting yet of the 100 minutes between the first plane's impact and the collapse of both towers, the commission investigating the attacks said communication problems and petty rivalries between departments may have contributed to the death toll of more than 2,700 in Manhattan that day.

The hearing turned contentious when commissioner John Lehman called the inability of emergency agencies to work together "a scandal" "

then again, it was a day of scandalous behavior: gwb sat in that little chair trying to read whatever for 9 minutes after he was told about the first plane crashing into the WTC. i can see him going 'whatever!'

Let's not forget G Dubya going into hiding for at least a day and then later claming that the enemy had the code to air force one. Last I checked, that was a lie.

holy shit, i never heard about that. (haven't read a [papier] english-language newspaper since 10 Sept 01 and we weren't wired for the 'net until november 01). in a way i'm glad this is news to me; i dint need any more outrage and this would've been just another piece of bullshit for me to obsess over. the utter nerve of the man, made worse by attempting such a blatant lie, in effect inviting us all to believe this shit which to my biased mind, is tantamount to assuming we're all as stupid as he is (well, that's the way i see it anyway). *bastard*

I never heard the one about Al Queda having the code to AirForce 1, but Georege Bush's travels that day are puzzling. He hung around the school while the Twin Towers were going down and the Pentagon was later attacked. He flew to another base, and then went up in the air again. I have no idea what he was doing, but it sure didnt seem like he was acting like a Commander in Chief and in charge of the situation. Maybe someone has some info on what was going down that down at AirForce 1...did the Commission cover this?

his behavior exactly fits the definition of 'poltroon:' a mental and moral coward.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
