WASHINGTON - Fearing that terrorists might target Congress, the House on Thursday approved a bill to set up speedy special elections if 100 or more of its members are killed.

The House, in a 306-97 vote, put aside for now the larger issue of whether the Constitution should be amended to allow for temporary appointments in the event that an attack caused mass fatalities among lawmakers.

I wouldn't imagine the founders of the Constitution would have given a thought to things like nuclear warheads wiping out an entire city, including all governmental officials.

Though, this will only work if this is a small scale, possibly terror related attack.

If this is a full blown nuclear war, you won’t have to worry about appointing new officials.

Everyone will be dead or dying anyway. Those who live will die from the climate, and atmospheric changes.

I always assume there was a spare shadow government cloned in some deep buried lab ready to go for that type of thing. However, I hear the George clones keep choking on pretzel and they have to replace it every 6 months. :D

I believe its a good thing. I'm not paranoid but why not have a back up plan?

Terrorism is a sad deal everywhere in the world and I think major steps are required for preparation against it.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
