I guess just seeing the World Cup isn't enough...

BERLIN (Reuters) - A German company is looking to cash in on an expected boom in the sex trade during next year's soccer World Cup with a 60-room brothel a walk away from Berlin's Olympic Stadium, German media reported Friday.

Named after the virgin huntress of Greek mythology, the "Artemis" complex is due to open for business in September with whirlpool, sauna, cinema, buffet restaurant and a staff of 100 prostitutes, mass circulation daily Bild reported.

Hey, they can do what they want I guess. I doesn't affect me.

the sex trade

This usually refers to the trading of human slaves/exploited people.

There has been no claim that this particular company has enslaved anyone or forced anyone to do anything.

If Reuters would like to keep their image as being factual and non-biased, they should consider re-wording their news article.

I will say one thing though; organizations like this should be scrutinized very closely.

All employees should be investigated to ensure that they are 100% voluntary (nobody should be paying off debts owed to people associated with the business by working there, etc) and everyone involved should be investigated to make sure they're going about their business in the safest manner possible.

It's all part of the nature of the business. If these precautions aren't already the norm, they should be.

*suppressed raving about legal prostitution*

Please do tell.

I'd be interested in hearing about it. As for myself, I look at prostitution and prostitutes with some skepticism. I seem to get a feeling of something lurking beneath the surface of many of their psyches that is not as honest and as enthusiastic as they sometimes let on. It makes me think that many prostitutes are not happy that they’re in that “line of work”, or that the profession has something to do with "problems" in their lives; perhaps some sort of emotional and/or physical outlet. I don't debate the "freedom" aspect. I'm not happy about laws that ban prostitution.

I could be wrong, or at least partially wrong. I would like to read your opinions on this.

And just for assurance, 99% of the time I don't agree with your opinions, comments, etc, but I, nor anyone else, is going to launch a personal attack against you for just expressing yourself.

I only bite when I've been personally bitten.

Go ahead and do it. You won't be going off topic by doing so.

Back on topic, i think there are different types of prostitution - in some cases, people are just looking for some extra cash, and sex to them is more casual then it is to other people. Prostitution, like everything else in life, comes in diffferent shades

Sex is a part of life - people need to deal with it as opposed to putting all these moral handles on it. Prostitution, after all, is the oldest profession...

That's true, and I tried not to generalize too much in my previous response.

However, your second sentence brings up a useful point.

Do you think that brothels like these should do physiological testing to screen out those who may be self-destructive (or something of that nature)?

Many professions have these types of tests (my cousin is going to be a NYS corrections officer, and he went through many tests both physical and physiological).

I know that it's sometimes difficult and intrusive to meddle in someone life choices, but I think it's also important to the business.

Business problems can develop from personal problems gone awry, and the profession is just as delicate as the job my cousin may have (though in a different way).

Yes - a healthy thing all around.

My point of view has almost nothing to do with morals (though you have to admit, almost everyone has certain "minimum" moral handles on sex; that's why you'd be so repulsed by pedophilia).

My point of view actually (if you believe this) had more to do with personal concern for others.

A form of compassion I guess. I would just hate to see someone not being completely honest with themselves about why they do something, and I have "suspicions" about prostitution in some instances for some people.

By the way, I think the world's oldest profession is not prostitution.

Prostitution requires more cerebral function than perhaps some primitive man doing some mundane task like rubbing two sticks together to start a fire, or something of that nature.

Actually, I always thought the oldest profession was the guy who shoveled shit during a parade.

Why buy the cow, when you can get the milk for free.....

Why give the milk for free, when they get thirsty... they'll pay whatever you ask.

Since most morality is a society influenced set of ideals.. the only thing I would say is I hope they have room for a private physician to keep the pumps in order.

Legislators drop bid to outlaw brothels

Providence Democrats abandon their bills strengthening the state's prostitution laws after critics say the language unfairly targets women.

PROVIDENCE -- Prostitutes who work behind closed doors will be able to dodge the law for at least another year.

Pressure from local civil-rights groups has killed efforts by the police and City Hall to criminalize prostitution in brothels, escort services, and illegal massage parlors.

The Providence Democrats sponsoring legislation that would have strengthened the state's prostitution laws are abandoning their bills. Rep. Joseph S. Almeida said yesterday he was withdrawing his bill after getting calls from activists and others that the measure unfairly targets women. His decision came three weeks after Sen. Rhoda E. Perry chose to drop her version of the bill for the same reasons.

"They don't feel going after the girls is the answer," Almeida said.

That was welcome news to the Rhode Island Affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, which had lobbied the legislators to drop the bill.

And it was a dismaying surprise to the head of the Providence police's vice squad. Providence has nearly a dozen brothels masquerading as massage parlors -- including three within walking distance of City Hall.

Last week, Lt. Thomas Verdi told the House Judiciary Committee that Providence would be the "capital of the Northeast" for prostitution if the bill wasn't approved.

"I'm very disappointed," he said yesterday, when told Almeida withdrew the bill.

Rhode Island is the only state whose prostitution law doesn't outlaw sex-for-money indoors -- and those involved in the prostitution business know it, he said. "Several years ago, there were one or two [massage parlors]. Now we're up to 10," Verdi added. "Unless we find another avenue, what's to say it can't go to 20?"

There are clusters of massage parlors, which the police say are actually brothels, operating throughout the state. The police raid them, but charges of prostitution don't stick because of a 25-year-old loophole in the law.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
