  1. NCAA bans fancy food, private planes for recruits By Mark Alesia [email protected] August 6, 2004 The NCAA on Thursday passed a host of recruiting reforms -- including banning the use of private planes and other perks to lure high school athletes -- in an effort to head off another football season plagued by scandal. Moving at a speed unusual for college sports' governing body, the school presidents on the NCAA's Division I Board of Directors ratified a six-part plan called for in February. The reforms go into effect immediately. Among the key mandates: Schools must create written policies, signed by the school president, that specifically prohibit the use of alcohol, drugs, sex and gambling during recruiting. Six new restrictions aimed at preventing the scandals of last season take effect immediately. New rules • Schools cannot provide extravagant hotel rooms or meals. • Recruiting "hostess groups" must be administered by the admissions department, not the athletic department. • Private planes cannot be used to fly in recruits. • Schools must establish written policies that prohibit the use of alcohol, drugs, sex and gambling in recruiting. • Recruits must use the same ground transportation as any other prospective student. • Schools cannot give a recruit a jersey with his name on it or make audio/video scoreboard presentations for a specific recruit. http://www.indystar.com/articles/9/168159-8909-102.html

  3. RICK JAMES • Musician Name at birth: James Johnson, Jr. James was a leading funk singer/songwriter of the 1980s. He got his start as a bassist in various bands before going solo in the late 1970s; his 1978 solo debut Come Get It! included the hits "Mary Jane" and "You and I" and made him a force in the world of danceable funk. His signature hit came from his 1981 album Street Songs; "Super Freak" was nominated for a Grammy and remained a dependable party tune for years. (The rapper MC Hammer had a major 1990 hit with "U Can't Touch This," which featured Hammer rapping over the catchy bass line from "Super Freak.") James's personal life has been uproarious; he was arrested several times on drug charges and served nearly two years in California's Folsom Prison (the same prison made famous in "Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash) from 1994-96. Extra credit: James was briefly bandmates with Neil Young in a 1960s group called the Mynah Birds... James is a nephew of The Temptations member Melvin Franklin. r.i.p. http://www.who2.com/rickjames.html
  4. Kittens Are World's First Cloned Pets Tabouli and Baba Ganoush (pictured, left) were born in Austin, Texas, and are almost 8 weeks old, Local 6 News reported. Lou Hawthorne, who is CEO of the Genetic Savings and Clone company in Sausalito, says scientists used more advanced technology to create the kittens. "They're very healthy clones and they also look identical both to each other and to the donor -- which is an important breakthrough because some of the clones of the past did not have this high degree of health or resemblance." The Bengal kittens are clones of a cat belonging to Hawthorne's son named Tahini. http://www.local6.com/news/3623918/detail.html

  16. Look miserable to help the war on terrorism By Philip Johnston, Home Affairs Editor (Filed: 06/08/2004) Holidaymakers and other overseas travellers were ordered yesterday to play their part in the war on terrorism - by looking miserable on their passport photographs. Under new security measures all mugshots must in future "show the full face, with a neutral expression and the mouth closed". http://news.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtm.../06/npass06.xml
