  5. Superfly is a 1972 film soundtrack by Curtis Mayfield for the blaxploitation film Superfly. Widely considered a classic of early-1970s soul and released in July of 1972, Superfly was a nearly immediate hit. Its sales were bolstered by two million-selling singles, "Freddie's Dead" (#2 R&B, #4 Pop) and the title track (#5 R&B, #8 Pop).
  6. This was featured in the 1971 movie of the same name starring Richard Roundtree. It was remade in 2000 starring Samuel L. Jackson as Shaft. Hayes made an uncredited appearance in the remake. This won a Grammy for Best Instrumental Arrangement and an Oscar for Best Original Score. Hayes wrote this. He was the first African-American to win an Oscar in a composer category. The instruments were played by Memphis funk group The Bar-Kays. For a while, they were Otis Redding's backup band. The distinctive funk guitar and hi-hat cymbals make this a very recognizable song. It is often used in commercials and TV promos, sometimes with the product name put in place of the word "Shaft." When Hayes was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, he opened the ceremonies with this. Sonfacts
  7. Hey Shawn great posts, I'm trying to slow up a bit by jumping to different forums. ;) Still love "she drives me crazy" just a fun song, something you sing along with while your home alone. Not my fav, Men W/out hats song but cool. These two Scottish brother impressed me with the kind of Buddy Holly looks and the throwback sound, and I love how they incorparated the clips in the video. 8. Songfacts: This is one of the most famous instrumental Rock songs. It got its title because of the intense editing that went into the song; it became a monster when it was pieced together in the studio. Says Winter: "When we were editing it in the studio, back in those days when you edited something, you physically had to cut the tape and splice it back together, so it was all over the control room, draped over the backs of chairs and the couch. We were making fun of it, trying to figure out how to put it back together, saying 'Here's the main body; the leg bone's connected to the thigh bone ... ' Then Chuck Ruff, my drummer, says, 'Wow, man, it's like Frankenstein.' As soon as I heard that, I went, 'Wow, that's it!' The monster was born." (thanks, Mike - Mountlake Terrace, WA. U.S.A) This was edited down to a manageable single in a long, arduous process. Edgar had band members perform over and over in an attempt to get it right. This wasn't supposed to be the single. It was originally released as the B-side of a song called "Hangin' Around." The sides were flipped when disc jockeys realized this was the hit. Songfacts
  9. Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band was a big band/swing/disco band formed in Brooklyn New York. Their biggest hit was "Whispering" / "Cherchez La Femme" / "Se Si Bon," which hit number twenty-seven on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1977. They topped the Hot Dance Club Play chart with "Cherchez La Femme" / "Sour and Sweet" / "I'll Play the Fool." Band members Thomas "August Darnell" Browder and Andy Hernandez later formed Kid Creole & the Coconuts. Cory Daye provided the lead female voice in the group. Ms. Daye also had some chart success as a solo act with the singles "Pow Wow" and "Green Light." They were sampled in a song by M.I.A. called "Sunshowers", and the song "Cherchez La Femme" was remade by Ghostface Killah in 2000 as "Cherchez La Ghost" on his Supreme Clientele album. Their song "Sunshower" was also remixed by Japanese recording artist Fantastic Plastic Machine.from Wikipedia
  10. Creedence Clearwater Revival, commonly referred to by their initials CCR or simply Creedence, was an American rock band, fronted by John Fogerty. Though hailing from the Bay Area of California, the group was influenced by the swamp blues genre that came out of south Louisiana in the late 1950s and early to mid-1960s. CCR cultivated a Louisiana connection through its choice of song and album titles, such as "Born on the Bayou," Bayou Country, and Mardi Gras, as well as through the southern "good ol' boy" image projected by its members. CCR was also an anti-war band with songs like, "Who'll Stop the Rain", "Run Through the Jungle", "Wrote a Song for Everyone" and "Fortunate Son".From Wikipedia
  11. It Don't Come Easy" is a song released as an Apple Records single by Ringo Starr in April 1971, reaching #4 in both the UK and U.S. singles charts. It was Starr's second solo single (the first was 'Beaucoups Of Blues') after the breakup of The Beatles. Starr reportedly composed the song in 1970. Decades later, he admitted that George Harrison "co-wrote" the song (as he did with other hits such as "Photograph"). But controversy still surrounds the assertion that Ringo really wrote the complex and mature song--especially since demo tapes have surfaced by Harrison where Ringo is completely absent and the song is more or less in its final form. Whether Harrison really wrote it or not (and gave it to his friend to start him on his career), the released version (recorded on March 8, 1970) included George Harrison on guitar, Klaus Voorman on bass guitar, Stephen Stills, Ron Cattermole (brass), Badfinger members Pete Ham and Tom Evans performing background vocals, and Starr on drums and lead vocals. Starr was featured performing the song at the Concert for Bangla Desh in 1971.From Wikipedia

  13. "Mama Told Me Not to Come" was a 1970 song by acclaimed songwriter Randy Newman. It was released on his album 12 Songs. Since its release, several cover versions have been made, the most famous being a longer, more funk inspired version released by Three Dog Night on It Ain't Easy (titled "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)"), also in 1970. This version has the distinction of being the first number-one song on the American Top 40 countdown show with longtime host Casey Kasem. In contrast with Newman's version, the party is rendered as chaotic, confusing and terrifying. Since then, artists as diverse as Tom Jones, Wilson Pickett, Lou Rawls, The Wolfgang Press and Stereophonics have produced versions of the song. "Joy to the World" is a song written by Hoyt Axton, and made famous by the band Three Dog Night. The song is also popularly known by its incipit, "Jeremiah was a Bullfrog". The words are nonsensical. Axton wanted to convince his record producers to record a new melody he had written and the producers asked him to sing any words to the tune. Three Dog Night's version went to number one on the pop music charts in February 1971, and was on the band's album Naturally. It was also released on their albums Around the World With Three Dog Night (1973), Joy to the World: Their Greatest Hits (1974), The Best of 3 Dog Night (1982), and Celebrate: The Three Dog Night Story, 1965-1975 (1993). Three Dog Night never really wanted to record the song but they needed one last track for their Naturally album. The group had been on an overseas tour when that album was released and were greatly suprised to hear that the song they didn't want to record ended up being a big hit.

  16. This was written for the movie That'll Be The Day, starring Ringo Starr... and David Essex. Ringo was a musician who sometimes acted. Essex was an actor who was sometimes a musician. It didn't make it on to the movie. (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL) The lyrics are a tribute to the early days of Rock 'n' Roll. This was a US #1 hit for Michael Damian in 1989. Like David Essex, Damian was also an actor. He was on the soap opera The Young And The Restless. Damian's version was used in the Corey Feldman movie Dream A Little Dream. This was Essex' only hit in the US, but he had several more in England. The trippy rhythm made this a popular drug song. This is the opening song for the 2000 movie Sunset Strip. (thanks, Shari - Port Townsend, WA) Def Leppard covered this song for their 2006 CD Yeah! The CD is a tribute to influential '60s and '70s Rock bands. (thanks, Adolfo - Mission, TX) From Songfacts
  17. lol, sorry about that, just trying to share the love.
  18. Forget Me Nots" is a 1982 hit recording by R&B singer songwriter Patrice Rushen. Originally deemed by record label executives as a "flop", Rushen bravely released the song and to her better judgment, the song became a Top 40 (#23) pop and Top 5 (#2) R&B hit on the Billboard charts and is the hit she's most notable for. The bass line is particularly recognisable, and was performed on the record by session bass player Freddie Washington. The song has been heavily sampled by artists in different genres including George Michael's "Fastlove" (which samples the song near the end) and Will Smith's 1997 blockbuster smash, "Men in Black".
  19. Brother of the Bee Gees. Three major chart entries, "I just want to be your everything", "(Love is) thicker than water" and especially "Shadow dancing", appealed to the dancefloor. The latter floundered in the UK but sold platinum in the US, staying at number 1 for 7 weeks. Andy Gibb is born March 5, 1958 in Manchester, England and died only 30 years old March 10, 1988, in Oxford, England, after developing a massive cocaine addiction, which led to his death in 1988 from an inflammatory heart virus, He did experience a solo after the great Bee Gees succes er revival with the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack in1977.
  20. "If I Can't Have You" was written by Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees. The song was intended to be included in the follow-up album to Children of the World (1976), but was given to singer Yvonne Elliman when the Bee Gees became involved in the production of the movie Saturday Night Fever (1977) in which the song, and also in the subsequent soundtrack, appeared. Elliman's version became an international smash hit, and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The song, as sung by the Bee Gees, was released as the B-side to the single "Stayin' Alive" in 1978 and also appeared in the 2001 compilation Bee Gees Their Greatest Hits: The Record. From Wikipedia
  21. Formed in 1968 in Chicago. Family group consisted of 3 sisters. Wanda(b.Dec.17,1951), Sheila(b.Jan.17,1953), Jeanette(b.1951) Hutchinson. Made their big splash in 1976-77, under the guidance of Maurice White from Earth, Wind, & Fire. Faded from sight after their guest appearance on "Boogie Wonderland"
  22. "Sledgehammer" is a hit song by Peter Gabriel from his 1986 album So. It peaked at number one in Canada for four weeks on July 21, 1986, number one in the U.S. on July 26, 1986, and number four in the UK singles chart, thanks in part to a popular and influential music video. The song was influenced by 1960s soul music, as evident by the use of horns and a general Stax sound. The distinctive Horn section was provided by the Memphis Horns - who were house musicians for Stax records. The song was also known for its use of a synthesized shakuhachi flute. "Sledgehammer" was Peter Gabriel's first and, to this date, only number-one hit in the U.S. It replaced "Invisible Touch" by his former band Genesis, which had its only number-one U.S. hit the previous week. Genesis bandmate Phil Collins sang back-up on "Sledgehammer".
