  1. Sembello wrote this with his songwriting partner Dennis Matkosky, who got the idea when he saw the William Lustig movie Maniac, which is about a serial killer who stalks his victims in New York City. Says Sembello: He came up with the original kernel of inspiration and to me with the basic idea and groove and i believe the temporary lyrics for the chorus he had were: "He's a maniac, maniac that's for sure He will kill your cat and nail him to the door" That direction obviously wasn't going to work at which point the genius of Phil Ramone, producer of the soundtrack who had the vision to see the potential of the song, asked us to change it to the present concept of a girl possessed with the passion of a gift for dance. Without Phil it would not have happened. Sembello: "It was nominated for an academy award and was disqualified according to "academy rules" because the song was changed from the original and was not originally written solely for the film, which pisses me off to this day. (Thanks for Michael Sembello for the info. To learn more, check out michaelsembello.com.) This was accidentally included on a tape of Sembello's songs his wife sent to Paramount for consideration in Flashdance. The studio loved it and used it in the movie. The dance scenes in the video (and the movie), were performed by body double Marine Jahan. The video was the first to use nothing but scenes from the movie. It started a movie/music cross-promotion trend (Pretty Woman, Dirty Dancing, etc.). SongFacts The song "Maniac" was selected for inclusion in the blockbuster movie "Flashdance". This song was the number #1 song on the Billboard chart and went on to become the third highest grossing song from a soundtrack. His contribution to that soundtrack was rewarded with a Grammy in 1983 for Best Album of Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or a Television Special. Sembello has done considerable soundtrack work, including such movies as Cocoon, Gremlins and Independence Day.
  2. Th 80's was the decade of androgyny . Prince Michael Jackson, Adam Ant.
  3. It was the band's ninth single release in the United Kingdom (the third taken from their sophomore LP Songs from the Big Chair) and seventh UK Top 25 chart hit, peaking at #2 in April 1985. In the USA, it was the lead single from the album and gave the band their first ever Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit on June 8, 1985, remaining there for two weeks. The song has since become the pinnacle of Tears for Fears' chart success, its endurance allowing it to accumulate over two million radio broadcasts by 1994, according to BMI.Wikipedia®
  4. Tears for Fears (abbreviated TFF) are an English pop band formed in the early 1980s by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, which emerged after the dissolution of their first band, the mod-influenced Graduate. They were initially associated with new wave and the burgeoning wave of synthesiser bands of the early 1980s, but quickly branched out into mainstream chart success. Tears for Fears have sold more than 21 million albums worldwide. "Shout" is written by Roland Orzabal and Ian Stanley of the British band Tears for Fears. It was the band's eighth single release (the second taken from their sophomore LP Songs from the Big Chair) and sixth UK Top 25 chart hit, peaking at #4 in January 1985. In the USA, it reached #1 on August 3, 1985 and remained there for three weeks. A bonafide smash hit, "Shout" would become one of the most successful pop songs of 1985, eventually reaching the Top Ten in 25 countries.Wikipedia®
  5. They were good without him, but Dave was a real shownman.
  6. "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" is a song originally released by Dead or Alive on their 1985 album Youthquake. This song was the first UK number-one hit for the Stock Aitken Waterman production trio. Originally released in November 1984, the record reached number one in March 1985, taking seventeen weeks to get there. The music video for the song is cheaply made, very surreal and tells no story, but the visuals are nevertheless bizarre (such as Pete Burns in a purple kimono, seemingly growing extra arms, or him with the infamous eyepatch; the other three band members tied up in some ribbons; close-ups of a disco ball, etc.). 7. "Jump" is the only single the group released in their career to reach #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.[1] "Jump" was released in 1984 as the second track on the album 1984. The song breaks the mould of earlier Van Halen songs, mainly in its rolling synth line (played on an Oberheim OB-Xa), although the song contains the standard Eddie Van Halen guitar solo, which Edward claims as his favorite solo he ever wrote. The video for "Jump" was directed by David Lee Roth. "Jump" may be Van Halen's most popular and instantly recognizable composition, perhaps because its sound embodies the key aspects of both of the two genres of popular music most associated with the 1980's in America: synth-driven pop and "arena"-style metal. Its synthesized brass introduction is one of popular music's most recognizable musical introductions. "Jump" changed the future and style of Van Halen from being a predominantly Hard Rock band to one of more radio-oriented popular music. Wikipedia®
  8. This song was trying to say something very pertinent back in '86. The really sad thing is that the player and faces have changed over the last 21 years but the song holds up as much today as it did then.
  9. I was looking for the video of this song when I posted Private Idaho but couldn't find it, but i think this one will do just fine. It even has captions in case you want to sing a long.
  10. You can't talk 80's music and not mention what was probably the hottest show in the 80's, Miami Vice. I have add two videos one of the series opening and the often forgotten long version(2:19). The last time some one forgot I won 5 dollars.
  11. The band was formed on 16th August 1977 in Sydney, Australia, which was coincidentally the lead guitarist, Tim Farriss's 20th birthday and Elvis Presley's death. The name INXS is an informal abbreviation for "in excess," used in chemistry. For example, "HCl is INXS" = "Hydrochloric acid is in excess."
  12. Dude, I didn't know I the forum could take embeded codes. Thanks that makes life easier.
  13. They are cool aren't they?
  14. The B-52's are a New Wave rock band formed in Athens, Georgia in 1976. The band's name comes from the large B-52 Stratofortress airplanes, and the hairstyle of the same name. During the band's first years, wigs of that style were often worn by the band's female singers Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson. Wilson and Pierson formed the band with drummer Keith Strickland, guitarist Ricky Wilson (Cindy's older brother) and vocalist Fred Schneider after a drunken night at a Chinese restaurant and played their first gig in 1977 at a St. Valentine's Day party for friends. The B-52's sound is marked by the vocals and lush harmonies of Wilson and Pierson, and the generally monotone or spoken-word vocals of Schneider. The band's quirky take on the New Wave sound of their era was a combination of dance and surf music set apart by the unusual guitar tunings Ricky Wilson used. B-52's Private Idaho
  15. Shannon (born May 12, 1958 as Brenda Shannon Greene in Washington D.C.), is well known for her 1983 smash dance/freestyle record, "Let The Music Play". The record redefined the electro funk sound that Arthur Baker and John Rocca (who produced "I.O.U" by Freeez and "One More Shot/Get Wet" by C-Bank) developed in 1982.In October 1983, the single was released without her knowledge. Shannon was invited back to lay out more songs for Liggett and Barbosa. Barbosa, a Puerto Rican from New York was considered the founder of Freestyle music. "Let The Music Play" is well known as the first freestyle track, with a heavy syncopated drum sound with Latin American rhythms that wasn't so electro as the sound the year prior. The single's success led to the number eight position on the Billboard Hot 100 and took over the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. Today the song is well-regarded as both a pop classic and one of the most influential dance records of all time. Her follow up single in 1984 was "Give Me Tonight," a record that charted poorly by comparison on the Billboard Hot 100, but received the same wild enthusiasm in the clubs as its predecessor and also hit the top spot on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. It also gained Urban radio airplay. That same year she released her debut album Let The Music Play. It was considered the first Freestyle album in history, and featured another club hit with "My Heart's Divided." Wikipedia® Give me tonight Video

  17. Nolan Thomas (born Marko Kalfa) was a Freestyle music artist known for his 1984 single "Yo Little Brother." He was discovered by legendary dance music producers Mark Liggett and Chris Barbosa of Shannon (Let The Music Play) fame when he was still in highschool. The original 12 inch single was initially released by Emergency Records. A full length LP was released by Atlantic Records in the early part of 1985 and yielded two more singles to modest success. 18. In 1985, DeBarge had its biggest hit with the Diane Warren-penned Rhythm of the Night, the main single from both the gold Rhythm of the Night album and the Motown/Tri-Star Pictures motion picture The Last Dragon.
