  1. yeah, aretha franklin is pretty good, but on those new records she looks nothing like she did on the blues brothers movie that whole "euro trash" personna really doesn't work for her---can you say "chris gaines"?

    Del Shannon

i have a bootleg of him from 1983 surprisingly good he also was in line to be a wilbury and worked on tom petty's "full moon fever"
  3. he's famous, but by no means overplayed in fact, they almost never play his music on the radio here in the states (i heard "no woman no cry" once, and a few songs on commercials "one love" on a commercial for jamaican tourism, and "jammin'" on the simpsons) he's still a favorite of mine, but he casts a big shadow that obscures the entire sections of reggae i thought about tosh, but i was tired of typing
  4. the life aquatic with steve zissou seu jorge's acoustic samba renditions of classic bowie tunes (in portuguese) made the movie, not just the soundtrack without the songs, the movie would have been much less interesting (wes anderson is great at integrating sound into film)
  5. Bob Marley is synonymous with reggae, that's fine, but here is some that isn't him but well worth the listen (there is some rocksteady, dub, and ska crossover, but it's all Jamaican, and i hate pigeonholing anyway) Jimmy Cliff making albums since 1968, island records shifted all their resources to Marley, and he fell by the wayside, even though his music is great, forcing him to hop from label to label, his troubles magnified by the death of his friend and producer Leslie Kong albums of note: (cd availability is spotty at best, these are available, most of his catalog is buried in obscurity) In Concert: Best of Live(1976) (always a safe choice) released concurrent to an appearance on the then new tv show "Saturday Night Live" The Harder They Come (1972) a movie soundtrack, one of my faves--everything good reggae is about in there: divinity, social protest, good music (features my favorite, "Pressure Drop") Best of (1988) another safe choice AMG likes Struggling Man (1973), Follow My Mind (1976), but they might be hard to find he still makes albums today, his most recent "Black Magic"(2004) features Wyclef, Sting, and others The Skatalites AMG says: more recent incarnations retain the horn section and fast action that typifies Jamaican "Dance Hall" music, lively and bright uptempo stuff (with some social and political stuff hidden in song titles) I have a lot of their stuff, some even AMG doesn't cover, so I'll stick to the stuff you can get Ska Authentic (1967) a gem, if you can get it Ska Voovee (1993) features electric guitar (hair band style) on standard ska bass and horns lineup Greetings From Skamania (1996) lively ska with a few borrowed riffs from classics, not a lot of vocals, but some great music Ball of Fire (1998) features the "James Bond Theme", along with a few other movie tunes great translations emusic.com has several albums, take their free 50 tracks deal and get a few in vbr mp3 others to check out Eek A Mouse! (weird vocal effects, fun to listen to) Mad Professor (bass heavy dub with carribbean kettle drum flavor, and electronc reverb and echo etc.) Lee Perry and the Upsetters (Marley contemporaries, similar style to the Wailers) Lee 'Scratch' Perry (same guy as above, his more recent electronic bass heavy dub) lots of cross over, lots to listen to Marley is great but reggae is much more than him

    New Rock Hub on DC

getting in isn't the point publically advertising a private hub has 2 outcomes 1)you let in everyone, and inadvertently invite trouble for yourself 2)you are semi exclusive, let in some and not others, hurting feelings and inviting another type of trouble for yourself all i'm saying is send your invites by pm and you'll be a lot better off

    New Rock Hub on DC

it's not a private hub if you publically advertise it
  9. thanks all it's my birthday, so i'm eating the whole cake myself
  10. who eats foie gras? rich people who are the people whining about it? other rich people all you have to do is say poor people like it, and it will go out of style serve it at homeless shelters or something (p.s. i hate geese, and am glad to hear about them getting killed--around here, they are a huge nuisance. imagine a 30 pound rat, then give it wings--voila! a goose!)

  15. awww geez i saw "courtney love sentenced to d..." and it was not what i hoped...
  16. their "intros" are so long that the song becomes an "outro" but they weren't as overplayed as the others, so i still sort of like them
  17. recognizable? yes catchy? maybe the best? no i like songs that get right down to business and don't waste time with an intro (pink floyd intros are useful, however, they make it easy to know when to change the station)
  18. or at least the members not slated to be in ringo's all starr band will be there odd that the most influential radio station would showcase the very artists they made into 1 hit wonders and then ignored for 25 years
  19. they will be cut to fit more ads most likely they've been doing this to the simpsons for years lesson=watch the first run, and don't watch syndicated versions
  20. i like ringo, but that incarnation of the all star band is anything but more like "ringo rama second banana extravaganza!" all he needs is oates of hall and oates, and the other guy from wham!

call them it's not like you have to give your name some people's paranoia astounds me it's a pain in the ass, but it isn't hard or dangerous to do--the people on the other line couldn't care less why it was reactivated a zillion times
  22. should have gone with c-jaywalking much smaller penalty
