  1. Old thread but I haven't been here in...forever... so I figured what the heck. Joe Higgs is worth checking out. He taught Bob Marley how to play guitar and had his hand in a great many of the best reggae albums. An unsung superstar of the genre. I'm liking Groundation lately. They've been described as avant garde reggae, the entire album telling a story. The one that I have, Hebron Gate, kind of reminds me of The Moody Blues' Days of Future Passed. The Congos and The Mighty Diamonds are kings in their own right. Toots and the Maytals, The Upsetter... Alton Ellis was king of the mountain in Jamaica until Bob came along. On the more modern world stage, there is Lucky Dube from south africa, martin jondo from germany, Svenska Akademin from I don't know! Buju Banton's 'til Shiloh stands amongst the best reggae albums of the 90s, imo and theres about 2 dozen Marley's all with albums worth a listen. yeah, I like reggae. Roots reggae, mostly. Someone mentioned political reggae... hard to top Linton Kwesi Johnson there, the ORIGINAL don gorgon.
  2. Umm that might make traffic bunch up a bit. lol. this reminds me of a story my parents used to tell when they were still together and pretending to be happy. My mother was one of those innocent, religious girls growing up who, when she gets to college, turns into a wild woman. So, she took an art class while in school and, for her final project, decided to make a 6foot tall paper mache penis (the artistic symbolism being: all men are dicks). Macon, Georgia was a small town at the time and she had no transportation so she had to walk the project to school. So, apparently, my mother was strolling down the street with one of her friends, both wearing daisy dukes, while carrying a 6foot penis. As you can imagine, this got just a few stares. Ultimately, it ended up causing a 3 car accident. Its a funny story and funnier when my mother tells it. I know it has nothing to do with the topic (except in an ancillary way) but I wanted to share it as I was reminded of it. :psychofun: Enjoy your iPODs ladies! ;)

    Which One's Pink?

I think that the confusion here comes from the fact that Waters developed the concept for the character "Pink". therefore, its logical for many to assume that he himself IS Pink when in fact Pink is certainly an amalgamation of characteristics of all the band members- but specifically of waters and barett.
  5. they all are known to wear feathered boas from time to time! as an aside, I met liza minelli one time while visiting with my father at a sleepaway camp for adults. erm... thats a rehab camp actually. and since this is beatking, I will mentions that the "toxic twins" built a building at same rehab center after recovering there. its a building in the round, full of murals and all that and sits on a hill overlooking this entire little town. pretty sweet views for a buncha addicts.
  6. 3 ages of vito corleone. that reminded me of that old riddle about the guy crawling on 4 limbs in the morning, walking on two in the afternoon, and using 3 in the twilight. hell, pacino played michael so.....yeah, I got that wrong. they did all play "The Godfather" though!
  7. yeah... I dont think they ever did sing any songs together... and this is what I meant by were together on Blue Valentine:
  8. Im not too sure DAIC>... Blue Valentine is one album I believe they worked together on. and definetely WERE together on!
  9. I must disagree here. you see, Moore is a talented documentary director and also more than capable of playing to the press as all can see. He is certainly self serving and sensationalist. that is not worth debating it is so true. BUT, I would argue that Moore could be making the same, if not more, money if he bought into the establishment, toed the party line, and produced similar documentaries- only this time, doing them from a conservative "align yourself with those in power" bent. in my mind, love the guy or hate him, it is the individuals choice. but, any man who has the courage of his convictions, the courage to produce such controversial documentaries and books in this time and political climate because that is what he believes deserves nothing but respect- even from his detractors. I mean, lets face it. he is making powerful documentaries with his books and movies. and sure he is getting rich. but dont you think that there might just be an easier way to acquire wealth than to expose such things (be they true or not, I dont mean to start a debate on that) as he does? because, quite simply, some of the things that he documents- if true- could quite easily get him mysteriously killed and he is (like it or not) smart enough to realize it.
  10. never meant to imply that they were. in fact, I havent heard anything of smash since he developed that ill fated p2p program 3 or however many years ago and many people were giving him shit and otherwise discouraging him- once to the point that I believe he wanted to quit as I reacll. I said what I said as I was recalling how I was one of the few (that I recall) encouraging him at that point. so like I said, Im glad he's kept on at it. this just proves to all those naysayers from back when that he has what it takes.

    Which One's Pink?

cool, thanks for the info umma. wish you were here is one of my favorite post barrett albums (the others being meddle, the final cut, dark side, animals, etc. -well you get the idea) and have a cigar always had a special place in my heart. I guess I didnt realize that the question "which one's pink/" was referring back to have a cigar as I thought everyone in the thread was debating pink as barrett or waters (for the most part) as well as the wall's place in it. sorry for the mixup!
  12. but.... there will be more to come, be afraid! :reallymad: actually, as reiteration, anyone wanting any "info" on the albums behind any of the song lyrics I post should feel more than free to pm me with their interest. this is perhaps my other favorite song by Waits... I do have tons of em though really: Tom Traubert's Blues Wasted and wounded, it ain't what the moon did, I've got what I paid for now See you tomorrow, hey Frank, can I borrow a couple of bucks from you To go waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda, You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me I'm an innocent victim of a blinded alley And I'm tired of all these soldiers here No one speaks English, and everything's broken, and my Stacys are soaking wet To go waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda, You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me Now the dogs are barking and the taxi cab's parking A lot they can do for me I begged you to stab me, you tore my shirt open, And I'm down on my knees tonight Old Bushmill's I staggered, you'd bury the dagger In your silhouette window light go To go waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda, You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me Now I lost my Saint Christopher now that I've kissed her And the one-armed bandit knows And the maverick Chinamen, and the cold-blooded signs, And the girls down by the strip-tease shows, go Waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda, You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me No, I don't want your sympathy, the fugitives say That the streets aren't for dreaming now And manslaughter dragnets and the ghosts that sell memories, They want a piece of the action anyhow Go waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda, You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me And you can ask any sailor, and the keys from the jailor, And the old men in wheelchairs know And Mathilda's the defendant, she killed about a hundred, And she follows wherever you may go Waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda, You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me And it's a battered old suitcase to a hotel someplace, And a wound that will never heal No prima donna, the perfume is on an Old shirt that is stained with blood and whiskey And goodnight to the street sweepers, the night watchmen flame keepers And goodnight to Mathilda, too
  13. this may be totally unrelated and perhaps even (gosh!) considered spam but my above use of the word consumate in relation to grief led me down a tangential path causing me to recall this poem by Bukowski. its another one of my favorite things. especially the last line. if I could just one line as well as that in my life I could die a happy man. Consummation Of Grief Charles Bukowski I even hear the mountains the way they laugh up and down their blue sides and down in the water the fish cry and the water is their tears. I listen to the water on nights I drink away and the sadness becomes so great I hear it in my clock it becomes knobs upon my dresser it becomes paper on the floor it becomes a shoehorn a laundry ticket it becomes cigarette smoke climbing a chapel of dark vines. . . it matters little very little love is not so bad or very little life what counts is waiting on walls I was born for this I was born to hustle roses down the avenues of the dead.
  14. hehe.... shawn, I seem to recall that a long time ago (on a website far far away) we were discussing this... or...uh... something like that! by far, the Cale version is better. unfortunately for me, I lost my version of it and can not seem to find the basquiat soundtrack on which John Cale's version appears.
  15. if you would like more shawn, do be in touch in pm... I dont know if I can say that I have all of his albums but I do have many many. actually, all the lyrics I do post here (not just Waits) will be from songs off of albums that I own. so again, the invitation to anyone wanting to PM me for info is extended again. btw shawn: here is probably (debated in my own head) my favorite tom waits song especially the line about "I yealled and I cursed, if I stay here I'll rust and Im stuck like a shipwreck out in the dust..." Whistle Down the Wind (Tom Waits) I've grown up here now All of my life But I dreamed Someday I'd go Where blue eyed girls And red guitars and Naked rivers flow I'm not all I thought I'd be I always stayed around I've been as far as Mercy and Grand Frozen to the ground I can't stay here and I'm scared to leave (Just kiss me once and then) I'll go to hell I might as well Be whistlin' down the wind The bus at the corner The clock's on the wall Broken windmill There's no wind at all I've yelled and I've cursed If I stay here I'll rust I'm stuck like a shipwreck Out here in the dust Sky is red And the world's on fire And the corn is taller than me The dog is tied To a wagon of rain And the road is as wet as the sea And sometimes the music from a dance Will carry across the plains And the places that I'm dreaming of Do they dream only of me? There are places where they never sleep And the circus never ends So I will take the Marley Bone Coach And whistle down the wind.
  16. this song here reminds me.... well, I used to do a little pool sharking myself. and when I was hot on the table I would sing this song to myself all the time. especially the line about "it's hard to win when you always lose..." Fumblin' With the Blues Friday left me fumblin' with the blues And it's hard to win when you always lose Because the nightspots spend your spirit Beat your head against the wall Two dead ends and you've still got to choose You know the bartenders They all know my name And they catch me when I'm pulling up lame And I'm a pool-shooting-shimmy-shyster shaking my head When I should be living clean instead You know the ladies I've been seeing off and on Well they spend your love and then they're gone You can't be lovin' someone who is savage and cruel Take your love and then they leave on out of town No they do Well now fallin' in love is such a breeze But its standin' up that's so hard for me I wanna squeeze you but I'm scared to death I'd break your back You know your perfume Well it won't let me be You know the bartenders all know my name And they catch me when I'm pulling up lame And I'm a pool-shooting-shimmy-shyster shaking my head When I should be living clean instead Come on baby Let your love light shine Gotta bury me inside of your fire Because your eyes are 'nough to blind me You're like a-looking at the sun You gotta whisper tell me I'm the one Come on and whisper tell me I'm the one Gotta whisper tell me I'm the one Come on and whisper tell me I'm the one
  17. consumnate misery (well close) at least in my opinion. and if youve heard the song, you might agree too Woe The ribbon round your neck aganist your skin that's pale as bone It is my favorite thing you've worn The band is playing our song And we wan't go home, 'til morn
  18. btw, if anyone is interested in any of the lyrics I post here (or anywhere else) PLEASE feel free to pm me for album info and....ummm..... stuff. know what Im saying? All The World Is Green I fell into the ocean When you became my wife I risked it all aganist the sea To have a better life Marie you're the wild blue sky And men do foolish things You turn kings into beggars And beggars into kings Pretend that you owe me nothing And all the world is green We can bring back the old days again And all the world is green The face forgives the mirror The worm forgives the plow The questions begs the answer Can you forgive me somehow Maybe when our story's over We'll go where it's always spring The band is playing our song again And all the world is green Pretend that you owe me nothing And all the world is green We can bring back the old days again And all the world is green The moon is yellow silver Oh the things that summer brings It's a love you'd kill for And all the world is green He is balancing a diamond On a blade of grass The dew will settle on our grave(s) When all the world is green
  19. tom waits is one of my favorite artists of all time without any doubt. so umma, you have inspired me! I think I will be posting lyrics to several of my favorite songs by him momentarily.

    Which One's Pink?

guess I got my two cents in a little too late in the debate! :P
  21. count me in redneck! I figure I shoot better than at least half the police out there.... I know that some of the times I been at the range and there were some police about they all sure looked at me with a little fear in their eyes after seeing my target perfed over and over at k5. addendum: I am by no means implying or advocating firing upon an officer.... just this one kentucky one!
  22. when I was having an audio system installed in my car I had only two major requirements. one was that I had an equalizer so as to be able to easily adjust the level of bass depending on the genre of music. and the other was that the speakers in the car itself must be of high enough quality to crisply play the high notes found in this song. believe it or not, I blew out something like 3 sets of speakers before finding one that gave me what I wanted. great song! and a great post shawn, thanks for the memories.
  23. for myself, Id never want a woman I was with to have an abortion. BUT (big but) ultimately it is the woman's choice in my opinion. believing anything else relegates us all to a male biased chauvinistic world in which our great and glorious leader can decree what a woman is allowed to do with her uterus. to that, I must call bull shit. Im thinking of pregnant young teens (and sometimes preteens) that I have met in free clinics. many of them did not even know what a condoms purpose was. or what an std was. what would come of the child born to such an undereducated child who had basically no chance herself? it is only fair that the mother (and her parents) have both of the above as well as abortion explained to them in detail and then presented with options. Im thinking of girls I have known who were raped and one who got pregnant as a result. she was herself against abortion but could not imagine raising a child concieved in such a manner especially while still a teen herself. so I went to the planned parenthood with her and held her hand. Im wondering, ken, if you've ever met anyone who was fucked at birth or condemned to a pitiful existence devoid of everything but ignorance and decay finalized in death at the ripe old age of 18. you talk of fucking idiots who dont contribute anything to humanity but there are those who never had a chance- regardless of what you might think or of whatever argument revolving around self determination that you might make. extenuating circumstances are the exception to every rule.
  24. if this is true then this guy deserves a hell of a lot more than just a year in prison which this article says is the maximum jail term if he is convicted. although.... being that he is apparently a pervert with pedophilic tendencies on top of a cop... well, a year in the right prison would probably be more than enough. and he has been placed on paid suspension. wtf is that? you're so f-ing right daic. disgusting individual, disgusting system.

    Which One's Pink?

I was gonna write almost this same exact thing here but then decided to read through the whole thread and found this. the early life of Pink in The Wall (along with basically the entire album The Final Cut and so much more Im sure) is definetely based on much of Waters childhood- the most poignant scene that comes instantly to my mind is the one in which Pink is in a garden- with his mother I believe- while shots of a bomb falling on his father are spliced in. This is surely a cinemazation of events in Waters' childhood as his father died in much the same way during WWII. and I have no proof of it but I also always believed that the mental and emotional deterioration of Pink was largely inspired by the madcap's (barrett that is, not beatking's!) own destructive spiral before and probably after his being made to leave the band. of course, Pink probably could also probably be viewed in a more symbolical context as well in that the character could be a kind of reverse archetype- a combination of the worst- and the best perhaps- traits in each of the band members. in truth though, in my opinion, everything Ive said is neither here nor there and largely done because it just feels good to actually write something again. Im more of the opinion that there's really just a lil bit of Pink in all of us.
