1. There is not a single film coming out in 2012 that I am looking forward to more than "Prometheus." It's not just Ridley Scott's return to science fiction that has me jazzed, or the fact that we'll once again dive back into the "Alien" universe — the same universe that made me fall in love with movies, for what it's worth — but also the all-star cast that's on board: Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender… and perhaps my favorite of the bunch, Guy Pearce. Pearce, starring in this weekend's sci-fi thriller "Lockout," appears in "Prometheus" in what sounds like a small but pivotal role. He'll play Sir Peter Weyland, founder of the infamous Weyland-Yutani Company that's played a central role in the "Alien" mythology to date. We've already enjoyed a glimpse of Weyland in a fictional TED Talk, part of the "Prometheus" viral marketing strategy. According to Pearce, however, that might be the last we'll see of Weyland — the actor's take on the character, anyway — until the film hits theaters in June. "You've seen everything you're going to see out of [the TED Talk], but there were some sections of the speech that were trimmed out, just for economics," Pearce told MTV News about shooting the viral video. "But there are other viral videos that are going to come out that involve the other characters from the film, with Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender. Mine was just the entrée to bigger and better things." Even if we don't see him again until the movie hits, there's certainly a lot of attention on Pearce's character, given Weyland's behind-the-scenes prominence in previous "Alien" movies and official tie-ins. The actor himself didn't feel the pressure while playing the character — though that's changed in the weeks since the TED Talk hit. "To a certain extent I'm feeling it more and more now! Every time I do an interview, and someone goes, 'Sooo... Peter Weyland!' And I go, 'Oh god!'" he laughed. "Yeah, there's a bit of pressure. But look, you're standing there in front of Ridley, and you're offering up whatever you can offer up. If it's not right, Ridley would say. So I just have to trust Mr. Scott there." Trust Mr. Scott he did, though as it's often said, trust does not come easily. Pearce admitted that while shooting "Prometheus" was a fun experience, "it was a difficult time as well, and I won't explain why [without spoiling the film], but it was quite rigorous." "Still, it was amazing to be part of such a historic series of films, ultimately," he added. "It was fascinating." Are you looking forward to Pearce's "Prometheus" role? 4. We here at MTV Movies Blog love "The Cabin in the Woods." There is no way around it. We love it so much, in fact, that it's really important to us that you love it too. So in the lead-up to this Friday's release of "Cabin," we're going to tell you everything you need to know about the film from Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard. But here's the thing. You're not supposed to know that much. We respect that as much as anyone else who has seen "Cabin," so here are the five things we can actually safely say about "The Cabin in the Woods." The Story The official production notes for "The Cabin in the Woods" tell you everything you'll need to know about the film before heading into the theater. "Five friends go to a remote cabin in the woods. Bad things happen." That's the official plot summary for a reason, so before you think, "Oh, that's a really boring premise," check yourself. That's the humor of the movie, so if you don't get it, maybe this isn't the movie for you. Delayed One of the great tragedies of "The Cabin in the Woods" is that the movie was supposed to come out two years ago. The world was supposed to be in year two of the post-"Cabin" bliss, but instead MGM filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy and spoiled the fun. "Cabin" sat on the shelf for nearly two years—at one point, there were talks of a 3D conversion. Eventually, Lionsgate ended up with it and will release it in glorious 2D. Whedon Works With Friends Whedon has earned a reputation for filling out roles with people he knows. One of the key roles in "Cabin" went to Fran Kranz, who had previously worked with Whedon on the show "Dollhouse." Whedon's two films with Chris Hemsworth were much more coincidental. Hemsworth had already joined "Thor" before Whedon was attached to "The Avengers." Not Knowing A Lot Actually Matters The thing you're most likely to hear about "Cabin" is that you shouldn't know anything going in. They are not lying to you. (Why would they lie to you?) The secrecy is there for a reason, and it's not to protect the final twist at the end of the movie. The whole effect of the movie relies on figuring out what the hell is going on as the movie progresses. It's carefully made to give you just enough information to keep you as interested as possible. It's Fun That used to be the point of going to the movies. Most times when thinking back to what you thought of a movie, words like "good," "sucked" and "really sucked" will come up, but when was the last time you thought a movie was genuinely "fun." The fun of "Cabin" makes it feel like a more active experience than most movies. You're sitting there trying to figure it all out, but you're also just enjoying the ride. Seeing "Cabin in the Woods" is a true theater-going experience, and one that should not be missed. 5. By: Uptin Saiidi (@uptin) Tyra Banks, Tracy Morgan, Ice T and more came out last week to see Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour at The Garden. The Cirque Du Soleil show honors the King of Pop through music, dance and acrobatics in a celebration of the life of the late Michael Jackson. But how do they take his iconic legacy and put it into a cirque production? When the tour came to New York City recently, MTV News went behind the scenes to talk with the creative forces and performers to find out and ask about performing for the Jackson family. After all, the nerves had to be high when they performed for the family in Montreal, as Creative Director Tara Young described, "The brothers have come and absolutely, that was pretty inspiring for everybody because they all sat in the front row so our artists on stage can see them and Michael's kids came as well [in Los Angeles] which was really something.” When asked what MJ would think if he were sitting there with them, Young smiled, "He would feel such a sense of pride of what he has given us to work with. It evokes emotions in people that they didn't even know were going to come out." “I would hope that he would be very proud of us and excited of what we've done with his music and his messages. We've tried to really encompass all of his body of work, we couldn't do every single song, but really the messages that we thought were important to him and really try to strive to be as incredible as he was. So I hope he would be happy and pleased.” In addition to evoking strong emotions, performing to MJ’s songs also came with a lot of pressure. For Felix Cane, a two-time world champion pole dancer who does a captivating performance to "Danger," it was all about using that pressure to help the audience to remember the pop icon. "You are sharing this passion with them, and this love of MJ. There's times in the show when some people and I, myself, might have shed a few tears. Tara Young recalled rehearsing before the tour began. "I think it is a pressure for sure; something I share with the whole building here is that we have nothing to prove, only to share," Young recalled. "We have an opportunity to share what Michael would have wanted to share and the pressure is only there to achieve excellence." 9. Picture this: a maximum security prison gets overrun by the inmates, with correctional officers and other bystanders taken as hostages. One such hostage just so happens to be the President of the United States' daughter — and the only man who can save her is a former special forces operative with an agenda of his own. Nothing too far outside the realm of blockbuster movie possibility, right? In the case of "Lockout," it gets better: all that aforementioned action? It takes place in space. In certain hands, the far-out premise of "Lockout" could easily be fumbled — it could take itself too seriously, or it could wink way too hard at the viewer. Thankfully, "Lockout" was very much in the right hands from the very beginning (the hands of Luc Besson and his EuropaCorp studio to be precise), a fact that was very attractive to co-leads Guy Pearce and Maggie Grace in signing on for the film. "It seemed so extreme and not ridiculous, but it did have ... a great sense of humor about it, I suppose," Pearce told MTV News when asked what he first thought about the "Lockout" premise. "I think we both responded to that." "It had a heightened sense of reality to it, unapologetically so," agreed Grace. "There was nothing pretentious about it. It was very much embracing this kind of retro action feel with a sense of humor. It didn't take itself so seriously. The movies in this genre that I remember loving growing up were always like that. They had a sense of humor that was fun. I think that's what really drew me to this." In the film, Grace plays the previously noted daughter of the president, Emilie Warnock, who finds herself forced to transform into a badass virtually overnight in order to survive the horrific spacebound prison riot. Thankfully, she has some help in that department in the form of Snow, the former operative tasked by the government with saving Emilie's life. It's not exactly a job that Snow's psyched about, to say the least, even if he has his own motivations for infiltrating MS One. "I have absolutely no interest in [saving Emilie] whatsoever, but I find out that my friend has also been held captive in this prison," Pearce told us about his character. "So that's really my motivation to get up there and get her out: to get to my friend." It's hardly a spoiler to say that somewhere along the way, Snow and Emilie do indeed link up. And when they do, sparks most certainly fly — but not the good kind of sparks, at least not at first. "He's salty. A little cynical," Pearce described of Snow's approach towards Ms. Warnock. "Clearly Emilie is someone he finds attractive — she's a beautiful woman — and she challenges him as much as anyone has in his life. He does his utmost to offend her from the moment he comes across her." "And succeeds, largely," Grace added with a laugh. Directed by James Mather and Stephen St. Leger, "Lockout" hits theaters on April 13. We are now just two days away from the premiere of the trailer for "Looper," the highly anticipated sci-fi action flick starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis. Every day this week, the trailers site at iTunes will post a small, teasing "vignette" that will lead up the premiere of the full trailer on Thursday. Today's look at the movie focuses on the tone of the science fiction in "Looper." Gordon-Levitt says that he sees "Looper" as a "down-to-earth 'Blade Runner.'" Not a bad comparison in our book. "That's actually one of my favorite things about this movie. It feels real," Gordon-Levitt says. "It's that style of sci-fi that could actually exist in thirty years." 16. Kim Kardashian was pretty bashful about her relationship with Kanye West during a recent visit to the Today Show, but fans might get a better understanding of their relationship if West makes an appearance on the new season of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Kanye West Addresses Kim Kardashian, Amber Rose, Wiz Khalifa On ‘Theraflu’ According to a source, the rapper may appear on the show towards the end of the season. "Kanye is head over heels in love with Kim, and he has told her he would love to appear on the reality show if she wants him to," the source told Radar Online about possible cameos. "Kim is a bit leery of having her man appear on camera because of the whole fiasco with her soon-to-be ex-husband, Kris Humphries, but watch for Kanye to make several appearances on the show towards the end of the season. Viewers won't see him featured in the first part of the season, and it won't be all about Kanye." It would hardly be the first time that Yeezy showed up on a Kardashian reality show. He previously appeared on the NYC-based Shortly after he appeared on the show, Kim brushed off any rumors that anything romantic was happening between the pair, instead dubbing him the Kardashians' "fashion muse." Now, however, both parties seem to be more forthcoming about what exactly is happening between them, and that includes some lyrics about Kanye's feelings for Kim on his track "Theraflu." The source added that "Kim feels extremely comfortable with Kanye because she feels that for the first time she is with a partner that understands what she does for a living and doesn't scrutinize her for being in a reality show. ... She also doesn't feel like Kanye is using her, like she did with Kris." Kim Kardashian Snapped On Her Way Out Of Kanye West's Apt While the Radar source insists that Kanye will appear on the show, another source tells the Huffington Post that the series had already completed filming by the time the two began dating. "The next season shows Kim, after her devastating split with soon-to-be ex-husband Kris Humphries, get even closer to her family," the source said. "Kourtney is getting ready for the arrival of a baby girl, and Khloe is dealing with reports that she might not be the biological daughter of Robert Kardashian. But all 18 new episodes were shot before Kim started dating Kanye." Kourtney Kardashian appeared on Fox News and didn't really have much to say about the couple's relationship status or whether Kanye will appear on the show when it kicks off next month. "Well, he has a 'K,' but I think they're friends," she said. "They're definitely friends and [have] been friends for years. ... I don't think so, who knows." 17. By Sowmya Krishnamurthy Opening statements are set for today in the murder trial of rapper G. Dep. In 2010, the former Bad Boy artist (who gained fame in the early 2000 with songs like “Let’s Get It” and “Special Delivery,") admitted to fatally shooting a man nearly two decades ago. "I shot and killed someone 17 years ago," Dep (born Trevell Coleman) reportedly told an officer at the 25th precinct in Harlem according to the New York Post. Dep told police that he was riding a bike when he approached the victim, 32-year-old John Henkel, on Park Avenue and East 114th Street near the James Weldon Johnson housing projects. Then-18 years old, Dep was planning to rob Henkel, but when Henkel resisted, Dep shot him three times in the chest with a .40-caliber hand gun. Dep then fled from the crime scene and threw the gun into the East River. Henkel was pronounced dead at St. Luke's hospital. When probed as to why Dep would openly confess to a crime that would otherwise have gone cold, a police source at the time said, "It was just eating away at him." According to the Washington Post, Dep has pled not guilty. His lawyer may focus on the effects that years of drug use had on the rapper’s confession. 19. By Miranda Johnson The up-and-coming rappers who graced the cover of XXL's 2012 Freshmen Class issue surely performed like seniors on Monday night. Iggy Azalea, Roscoe Dash, Kid Ink, Macklemore, Hopsin, Danny Brown, Future, French Montana, Machine Gun Kelly and Don Trip tore the house down at New York's Best Buy Theater, with MGK and French Montana really showing why they were chosen to hold the prized title at the “Freshmen Live” Concert. The frosh brought along many guests for their big outing. DJ Khaled, SchoolBoy Q, Red Café and Tech 9 all made appearances during the show, while radio personalities Cipha Sounds and Peter Rosenberg played MCs for the evening. Don Trip started things up with his hit "Letter to My Son" which features Trey Songz. The track instantly brought the rambunctious crowd of down to a mellow mood. However, their mood promptly accelerated when he performed his next track, "I'm a Mess.” The freshmen that followed, including Kid Ink, Roscoe Dash Macklemore and Iggy Azalea kept the crowd bumping for the first half of the show. Earlier in the day Azalea told MTV News, "I haven't been doing a lot of shows and I think alot of people dont understand why but it's because I've been working on my album. So every time I have a show lately I'll be so excited," adding, "I wish Tip was here. Lately all the shows I've been doing I've been so lucky that I get to bring him out and now I'm spoiled." Danny Brown continued the show and rose the bar to a whole new level for the following acts. Brown crowd surfed as Machine Gun Kelly would also do later and certainly acted “psycho” as he frequently spits on his tracks. Future followed, taking the crowd to Pluto. The Atlanta rapper had a moon man mascot onstage during his set, which surely set him apart from the rest. Next a masked French Montana hit the stage and he was definitely a crowd favorite, bringing out Khaled who rapped along to some of his biggest hits, including “I’m On One.” MGK closed out the show, with probably the most anticipated set of the night. The Ohio rapper was indeed a “Wild Boy” last night as he sprayed water all over fans and cut an “X” on his stomach to prove his loyalty. 21. The latest Bond movie, "Skyfall," has been a long time in coming. But now the Sam Mendes-directed project which returns Daniel Craig to his role as James Bond is busy shooting in Pinewood Studios, and MTV News was lucky enough to be invited to the set to check out some of the action. Apparently we haven't been the only ones desperate for some more 007. Craig admitted to MTV that he's been "kind of itching to get going for a while." But the "Casino Royale" and "Quantum of Solace" actor promised that having Mendes take his time with the film and bring on actors like Javier Bardem will create "richer content" in the long run. Speaking of Bardem, we're pretty darn excited for his role as Bond villain Silva. Craig said that Silva gives his character a run for his money, and Bardem agreed that that's the general idea. "I think the character is really complex. He's not an easy guy. He's not only a villain, it's more than that -- hopefully! That's what we tried to achieve," he said. "I'm giving James Bond a hard time. That's my job! That's my duty." And what would a 007 movie be without its Bond girl? In this case, it's French actress Berenice Marlohe playing the sultry Severine. "This movie's really like a classic Bond movie, so this character and I really wanted to be part of this classic spirit," she told MTV, adding that she hopes Severine can steal James Bond's heart. "I just try to make the best movie we can," Craig said. "When you have a really good script, which we did with this, then you know you have a foundation to begin a movie, and then you kind of make it bigger and better." 22. Nine years after the last sequel and 13 years after the original was released, Jason Biggs, Tara Reid and the rest of the gang had an “American Reunion” this weekend, as they looked back on their high school years with wistful nostalgia. Yes, it may be shocking to some, but the '90s are now a good decade and some past us. Given Hollywood’s love for remakes and sequels, it’s already started turning towards the '90s well — the 80’s have already been well-plundered, after all. Besides “American Reunion,” there was, of course, the announcement that Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels will reunite for a sequel to 1994’s uproarious “Dumb & Dumber.” Clearly, we’re in for an avalanche of '90s nostalgia for the next decade! So, which '90s movies are ripe for a sequel? Here are five that we think would be great. "Clueless" We already mentioned this yesterday in our high school movie reunions piece, but it bears another mention here. Tina Fey and Lindsay Lohan garnered a lot of attention for “Mean Girls” back in 2004, but if we’re being honest, this 1995 interpretation of “Emma,” starring a pitch-perfect Alicia Silverstone as a privileged high schooler, was better. Chockfull of quote-worthy lines (Cher on boys: “I mean, come on, it looks like they just fell out of bed and put on some baggy pants and take their greasy hair - ew - and cover it up with a backwards cap and like, we're expected to swoon? I don't think so!”) and featuring several great characters, “Clueless” transcends the teen movie genre. Wouldn’t it be great to have a sequel where we could see if lovebirds Cher (Silverstone) and Josh (Paul Rudd) lasted the distance? Now that Rudd’s a major comedic star, surely he has the clout to get a sequel greenlit. I, for one, would love to hear Cher critique the fashion trends of today’s high school boys. Of course, what would be missing from the sequel would be Brittany Murphy, who played standout character, Tai (Remember “Rolling with the Homies?”), but then, the sequel could be a way to pay tribute to Murphy. After all, the star had gotten her big break with “Clueless.” "Reality Bites" Before Gen-Y and the Millenials, we had Generation X, the children of baby boomers. And if there was one movie that defined the generation that grew up on the end of the Cold War and the rise of AIDS, it would be 1994’s “Reality Bites.” The movie, starring Ethan Hawke, Winona Ryder and Ben Stiller, captured the voice of the early '90s slackerdom culture, and its soundtrack, featuring Lisa Loeb’s "Stay," defined its sound. At the end of “Reality Bites,” Ryder chooses Hawke’s slacker character, Troy, over Stiller’s ambitious, driven Michael. But was that the right decision, 20 years down the road? Certainly, while Hawke is no slouch, Stiller is the bigger star in Hollywood today. A “Reality Bites” sequel could continue to be the voice of Generation X – instead of pondering about hanging out and which boy to choose, the trio could instead discuss mid-life crises, and how decisions made in your twenties can profoundly shape the way your future unfolds. "Wayne’s World" Ok, “MacGruber” didn’t do so hot, but back in 1992, “Wayne’s World,” based on a "Saturday Night Live” skit, became a $100 million megahit and even spawned a quick sequel a year later. Since “Austin Powers” and “Shrek” concluded, star Mike Myers has been trying unsuccessfully to launch another franchise, most recently bombing with “The Love Guru.” Instead of trying to start one, why not revive his first and arguably still best franchise? We can imagine it already: Myers and Carvey rocking it out to Katy Perry and Rihanna, while riffing on erectile dysfunction. "I Know What You Did Last Summer" The “Scream” franchise, which revived the slasher genre in the '90s, was successfully relaunched last year with a third sequel. So, why not a sequel to the obviously “Scream”-inspired “I Know What You Did Last Summer” then? The movie, and its sequel “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer,” was, let’s face it, sold largely on the sex appeal of star Jennifer Love Hewitt. Well, more then a decade later, Hewitt is still smoking hot, as anyone who’s seen the trailers to her latest TV series, “The Client List,” can attest. Plus, a reunion of the original cast of late '90s teen icons Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillipe and Freddie Prinze Jr. will certainly up the curiosity factor. So, bring on “I Will Never Forget What You Did That One Summer Over 15 Years Ago” already! "The Big Lebowski" You know that a movie has become a cult classic when there is an internet religion dedicated to the philosophy of its main character. Yes, “The Big Lebowski” barely made a ripple when it was released in 1998, but over the years, it has gathered many new fans, even inspiring the The Church of the Latter-Day Dude. There’s an obvious plot for a “Lebowski” sequel. At the end of the iconic stoner flick, it is strongly hinted that Julianne Moore might be pregnant with The Dude’s (Jeff Bridges) child. So, of course, we can imagine a sequel where The Dude imparts his ways to his son. Given how James Franco so aptly portrayed a stoner in “Pineapple Express,” we can already see him getting cast for this role. And if you fret about where Steve Buscemi might fit in, remember the original cast remember can always pop up in one of The Dude’s dream sequences. 23. 2 Chainz dropped by BET's "106 and Park" on Monday night (April 9) sporting only one gigantic chain and after a pretty enthusiastic welcome from the crowd, the conversation naturally segued to how far he's come in the past year. 2 Chainz has been working with Kanye West over the past few months, even appearing on the recent G.O.O.D Music track "Mercy," and Ye came out to join him at "106." Unlike the recent mouthful he gave us on "Theraflu," though, Kanye said absolutely nothing during his visit. Co-host Terrence J was pretty pumped about Kanye's appearance, yelling over the crowd, "First televised interview with Kanye in a minute!" but calling it an "interview" was really quite a stretch. Ye kept his lips zipped, letting 2 Chainz do his thing, which included talking about their recent work together. “First of all, I feel like Kanye is the best producer in the world. The way that he describes things, the way that he sees things is different from anyone else," 2 Chainz said. "It’s an honor. It’s a pleasure to just be in the studio with him at the same time, and just clashing worlds. My background, my resume is filled with street credibility music, trap rap and then he kind of brings his colors and images to what I’m doing. So he’ll definitely be a part of my project, dropping August 14th, Based on a T.R.U. Story.” “We need more Kanyes. He really speaks how he feels," he continued. "A lot of things that I want to say, I don’t feel I’m in a position or have a right or platform to say it,” he said. “It just feels good for him to have the mental capacity to know when to tap into urban America, when to cross over, when to take it overseas. He just has the ability to do so many things, and he’s just including me in the equation." View the full article
