2. By Marvin Van Buren Nicki Minaj has a lot to celebrate this week, most importantly the release of her sophomore album. Minaj debuted at #1 last week, selling 253,000 copies of Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. Dozens of fans and industry insiders gathered at LIV nightclub in South Beach on Sunday night to greet Minaj as she rolled up to her album release party in a convoy of Maybachs. Nicki's Cash Money family, including Birdman and Lil Wayne played hosts for the night. Nicki Minaj Says 'Hip-Hop Culture Is Still In My Heart' The extended family in attendance included Fred Durst, Bobby V, Mack Maine and Mystikal. Video footage from Derrick G showcases Nicki being greeted by a large, lavish cake in honor of her album. The footage also shows Lil Wayne performing at the party, and concludes with Nicki Minaj laughing and joking with Wayne and Birdman at her soiree. The party doesn't stop in Miami though. Today fashion designer Jeremy Scott posted several pictures on his Twitter timeline showing Minaj wearing a very vivid outfit from his fall collection for Adidas. This follows news of Nicki Minaj closing a new endorsement deal with Pepsi to promote their "Pop" drink. 3. In March Nas dropped "The Don," the first single from his upcoming 10th album Life is Good, with production from Salaam Remi, Da Internz and the late Heavy D. “The Don” mixes a 90s reggae vibe with vintage boom bap, and the Queensbridge rapper took some time out this week to film visuals from the track. On Thursday (April 12) Nas even tweeted a few snapshots from the video set. More flicks after the jump. Last month Nas broke down production on "The Don" to MTV News. "When Salaam played me the beat for it, I said, 'That's the single — do this and do that and we're golden.' So he started flipping it around," Nas said of the first time he heard the instrumentals. "When we heard that Heavy D died, of course we were messed up, and Salaam called me and told me, 'You know your record "The Don"? You know who gave me that, right?' "He's like, 'Heavy D gave me that. He liked what we did with the other single, "Nasty," and he sent me this record.' And the rest is history," Nas continued. "So rest in peace, Heavy D." 7. For years, when people suggested that the labels should adapt their business models to the digital age and compete with piracy, the RIAA claimed that it’s impossible to compete with free. Today the RIAA takes this notion back. “The single most important anti-piracy strategy remains innovation, experimentation and working with our technology partners to offer fans an array of legal music experiences,” they now say. The usage of the word “remains” is remarkable, since to our knowledge this is the first time the RIAA has admitted that innovation is more important than enforcement. But let’s not dwell on that for too long. While the RIAA’s statement can be seen as a victory for those who in recent years spread the “innovate not legislate” mantra, it is tucked away in an article that spreads dubious claims and statistics on the effectiveness of copyright enforcement. RIAA Vice President of Strategic Data Analysis, Joshua Friedlander, begins as follows: “Although the impact of anti-piracy efforts often seem self evident to us, it’s important to see the real world effects, and we’re happy to see two new studies illustrating the value of these efforts in the marketplace.” The first study highlighted by the RIAA shows that the French anti-piracy law Hadopi boosted iTunes sales. A highly controversial report, as the main conclusion is that the media buzz a year before the law went into effect was the single cause for this jump. No third variables are seriously considered, and the authors fail to mention that digital sales actually went down in 2011, the first full year Hadopi was active. More on this in our full analysis of the report. The second “study” isn’t really a study, but an attempt by the RIAA itself to show how effective the LimeWire shutdown was. Using Nielsen Netview data the music group reveals that 9.5 million of the 14 million people who used LimeWire shortly before the shutdown, stopped pirating entirely. This also had a significant impact on the total number of US file-sharers. “The Limewire shutdown affected the overall numbers of users of illegal content sources. The overall number of U.S. users of the illegal sites in September 2010 was 28 million, but that fell to 19 million by September 2011,” the RIAA writes. In other words, the total number of US file-sharers dropped 9 million a year after the LimeWire shutdown (which is +0.5 million if we discount the LimeWire users). So far so good, but what the RIAA fails to point out is that there’s absolutely no evidence that the drop is related to the LimeWire shutdown. We doubt it, and also have some numbers to show that RIAA’s conclusion may be completely bogus. Let’s add two more data points that former RIAA boss Mitch Bainwol shared last year. “The number of Americans engaged in illegal music consumption fell from roughly 30 million in May of 2010 to about 24 million in May of this year,” he said. Combining the four points, we see that during the 4 months prior to the LimeWire shutdown the number of music pirates decreased by 0.5 million a month. The 8 months after the LimeWire shutdown this average is exactly the same, 0.5 million a month. Interestingly, there is a larger drop between May 2011 and September 2011, a decrease of more than 1 million music pirates a month. Surely, that can no longer be a LimeWire effect? What it is, we don’t know, but something happened last summer around the same time Spotify was introduced in the US……. And that brings us back to the innovation part. After all, we now agree with the RIAA that innovation is the best way to kill piracy – creative statistics and overbroad censorship clearly aren’t. Source: RIAA: Innovation is the Best Way to Kill Piracy View the full article
8. By Sowmya Krishnamurthy Back in March Swizz Beatz confirmed that A$AP Rocky would be featured on "Street Knock," the first single from his upcoming Limitless mixtape and last week Swizz invited MTV News to hang with him, Allen Iverson and A$AP on the video set in New York City. "Right now, I'm here at the shoot with the homey Swizz, about to make history," Rocky told the cameras. The two were joined by basketball veteran Allen Iverson, who showed off his crossover skills in one of the scenes. "Music is a form of expression," Swizz said. "I just love to be here and being able to share that expression with the world." Slated for debut later this year, Limitless is set to include a slew of additional features including Rick Ross, Nas, DMX and the Lox. "When the Rick Ross mixtape [Rich Forever] came out, that inspired me to do a mixtape, because sometimes people need to get back into the element of what you do, since they see you doing so many different ventures," Swizz explained to MTV News in early March. "People have to know that you can take it back to the basics and keep it hip-hop and keep it fun and just do what made you the person that you are," he continued. "That's why I think this mixtape is important. I'm vibing with Nas on it, Rick Ross, DMX, the Lox — people that everybody asks, 'Man, when are you guys gonna do a track together?' and 'When is this happening?' I thought the mixtape was a great way to bring that to life." Many fans were expecting the "On to the Next One" producer's next musical project to be the LP Haute Living, but Swizz is opting for perfection over expediency. "I know that everybody was looking for a whole album," he added. "But I'm a perfectionist, and I felt like I just wanted to put some more finishing touches on it and figured I don't have to rush anything." 11. by Ryan Rigley Some might argue that the new Guy Pearce movie "Lockout" is just "Taken" in space. Well, first of all, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. "Taken" in space is a brilliant idea. Second of all, both movies were written by the same guy! Luc Besson, the famed French filmmaker, is the man behind several of the best action movies to come out of this past decade. Although his name might not be instantly recognizable, Besson has been involved in the production of over 50 films as either a writer, director or producer. He's also the creator and founder of the EuropaCorp film company, which has produced over 100 films since it's inception back in 1997, including this weekend's "Lockout." In honor of the space-set action flick, written and produced by Besson, we've compiled a list of the five best films that Luc Besson has ever been involved with. Check them out after the jump! » 1. "The Fifth Element" (Writer/Director) Taking place in the 23rd century, Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovovich must join forces and collect four mystical stones in order to stop Gary Oldman and Evil itself. This French science fiction film is set in a unique, futuristic landscape and chock-full of fun, memorable outfits. Who could forget Jovovovich's masking tape bikini or Chris Tucker's leopard-print space pimp suit and loofah hair? » 2. "Taken" (Writer/Producer) Liam Neeson has a very particular set of skills. Skills that make him a nightmare for the Albanian mafia, who have TAKEN his daughter and plan to sell her as a sex slave. But not to worry. Liam Neeson will look for them, he will find them, and he will kill them. Although the premise for this film is admittedly very basic, it's still one of the most badass action movies ever made. Good thing they're making a sequel! » 3. "The Transporter" (Writer/Producer) The movie that made Jason Statham a household name, Frank Martin (Statham's character) is an exceptionally talented mercenary driver that will deliver anything, anywhere without a second thought. If the price is right, that is. However, complications arise when Frank soon discovers that one of the packages that he's meant to deliver is a helpless young woman. » 4. "Unleashed" (Writer/Producer) One of the most bizarre concepts for a martial arts movie, "Unleashed" tells the tale of Danny, a skilled fighter that will only attack once the metal collar has been removed from his neck. Raised as a dog, Danny (played by Jet Li) has the mentality of a child with no recollection of who he is or where he's from. All he knows is how to beat people up on command, which his owner takes advantage of as often as he can. » 5. "Leon: The Professional" (Writer/Director) A hitman, living on his own in Little Italy, becomes the unwitting instructor of a 12 year old girl whose family has just been murdered. Jean Reno, who plays the hitman, stars alongside Gary Oldman, who plays a corrupt DEA agent, and Natalie Portman, in her feature film debut. In exchange for Jean Reno teaching her how to kill, Natalie Portman teaches him how to read. The two develop a very strange bond over the course of the movie that is even somewhat uncomfortable at times. It's great! 13. Getty Images Remember when Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV VMAs, prompting President Obama to call him a "jackass?" Well, Obama isn't quite ready to retract that statement. In an interview with The Atlantic, the president was asked to choose between Jay-Z and Kanye West, and he didn't have a very difficult time coughing up his answer, which was, "Jay-Z." After confirming that his favorite Throne MC is Hov, the ever-diplomatic Obama threw in a few nice comments about 'Ye. "Although I like Kanye. He's a Chicago guy. Smart. He's very talented," the president said. The interviewer didn't let the subject drop without mentioning that President Obama once referred to Kanye as a "jackass" when he interrupted Taylor Swift's VMA speech, but Obama didn't shy away from the comment. "He is a jackass," Obama replied, with a perfectly even voice. "But he's talented." Even without the whole VMA fiasco, it's clear the Obamas have a very close relationship with Jay-Z and his wife, Beyoncé. Jay has been outwardly supportive of President Obama's campaign from the beginning, and B recently joined a group of celebrities who designed personal swag for Obama's re-election campaign. This week, Beyoncé even penned a heartfelt letter to Michelle Obama, thanking her for being a great role model. "I am proud to have my daughter grow up in a world where she has people like you to look up to," she wrote. The two have previously collaborated on the first lady's Let's Move! Campaign, which targeted obesity in children. Beyoncé reworked her hit single "Singles Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" into "Move Your Body," encouraging kids to get fit. 14. There just might be some trouble brewing for Jessica Lange on season two of "American Horror Story." What kind of trouble? The catty kind, which just so happens to be our favorite kind. Per The Hollywood Reporter, French actress Lizzie Brochere has been confirmed for a part on the second season of the creepy, drama-filled FX series. And, according to sources, she could serve up some trouble for Lange, who will take on a new role as the show takes on a whole new set of story arcs. TV Line reports that Brochere’s character will go by the name Gia. Sources add that while the role has been revamped a bit, Gia was previously described as a "fierce, ferocious, extremely sexual and dangerous wild-child sexpot, the character—billed as a nemesis for Jessica Lange—was likened to Angelina Jolie in ‘Girl, Interrupted.'" Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine recently confirmed that he will also appear on season two of the show playing one half of “The Lovers." "I mean, it's pretty much happening. I think it's happening. I don't know how much I can divulge, because [series co-creator] Ryan [Murphy] is very under wraps,” he said. "It's going to be fun. And I told [show creator Ryan Murphy] I really didn't know what I was doing, but he didn't seem to really care. So I'm just going to go and try to [do] acting. I think I'm going to be kind of playing myself, so hopefully it will be easy." Season two is set to premiere in October with returning season one favorites Lange, Zachary Quinto, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters and Lily Rabe. It has been reported that the new season might take place on the East Coast in a mental institution. Season one took place in Los Angeles with a troubled family moving into a new home, lovingly referred to as "Murder House" on the series because so many people were killed there. 18. During MTV News's recent visit to the set of "Skyfall," main baddie Javier Bardem teased that his character, Silva, will give James Bond a run for his money in the upcoming movie, adding that he will be much more than just a cut-and-dry villain. "I see them more than villains. I see them like people with some circumstances behind them make them act and react the way they do," Bardem explained. "It's not only a sign you have to put on a character like, 'This is a villain.' This is a man who has some trouble going on and he has to cope with that." Bardem is no stranger to playing villainous roles. The Spanish actor rose to critical acclaim—and won an Academy Award—for his performance in 2007's "No Country For Old Men." But Bardem said that he felt like his role of Silva in "Skyfall" is something that he hasn't portrayed before. "In these times, there is nothing that we haven't seen before. But I guess it's a different type of person than I've played before. Hopefully. You never know. That's what I pretend to think, but maybe that's not what I achieved as an actor" he said. "When I read it, I see different images that comes to my mind in order to play it. It's fun for me to do that because I haven’t done it before." Some recent set photos tease that there could be a physical transformation occurring as well, but Bardem wouldn't confirm or deny whether he's gone blonde for the latest Bond movie. "I'm not allowed to say," Bardem said with a laugh. "Everything is secret." "Skyfall" is due in theaters November 9, and the cast and crew are still hard at work shooting the flick. Bardem said he's been having a great time filming with his esteemed peers. "It's great. It's a great honor to belong to the same set with Judi Dench, Daniel, Albert Finney, Ralph Fiennes. It's pretty spectacular," he said. Are you looking forward to finding out more about Silva in "Skyfall"? 19. via Jeremy Scott's Twitter By Andrés Marín This morning, fashion designer Jeremy Scott posted some pictures on his Twitter account, showing Nicki Minaj wearing a wildly colorful and puffy outfit from his new fall fashion line for Adidas. The queen of rap, who dropped her sophomore album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded last week, was shooting with Scott as part of a commercial campaign for Adidas. Made U Look: Nicki Minaj Stars In MAC's Viva Glam Campaign Jeremy was particularly amazed by his own appearance in the background of one of the pictures, where he was supposedly yelling “werk” during the session in Brooklyn. He also posted about being followed by paparazzi and meeting some of Nicki’s fans while hanging out with her in New York over the past few days. Nicki's outfit, a long colorful puffy jacket with non-matching colored sneakers fit well with her usual outlandish looks. This new campaign follows Minaj's recent commercial deals with brands such as MAC, OPI and even Pepsi. Nicki Minaj Says 'Hip-Hop Culture Is Still In My Heart' A few months ago Minaj posed for MAC’s Viva Glam Lipstick along side Ricky Martin and in March she signed on to promote Pepsi's new "Pop" drink. 21. The anti-spoiler talk around "The Cabin in the Woods" has almost reached self-parody at this point. Twitter user @williambgoss summed it up perfectly when he wrote "You guys probably shouldn't see The Cabin in the Woods this weekend. It's FULL of Cabin in the Woods spoilers." But all this talk of spoilers is there for a reason. Rarely has the effect of a film relied so heavily on discovering its secrets as the writers intended. Joss Whedon and director Drew Goddard pieced together a brilliantly twisted story that deserves the level of secrecy it has. So if you're looking to avoid spoilers before checking out "The Cabin in the Woods" this weekend, we've put together a helpful guide. Avoid negative reviews A few writers, including Devin Faraci over at Badass Digest, have pointed out that not only do most of the negative reviews of "Cabin in the Woods" spoil the movie's best surprise, some even get facts wrong. (Rex Reed's completely misses the ball, in particular.) Strangely enough, it's predominantly the negative reviews that spoil all the fun. Also, they're totally wrong. Avoid any reviews It's in the nature of a film review to reveal enough about the movie to give you an idea of what the movie is about. Unfortunately, "I can't tell you anything" doesn't help reach a minimum word count or sufficiently describe the film for outsiders. An ideal movie review of "The Cabin in the Woods" would read, "It's awesome. See it, and we'll talk afterward." Depending on how averse you are to finding things out beforehand, that's your safest bet. The trailer doesn't help Usually moviegoers can look to a film's trailer for an accurate representation of what a movie will be like. The trailers for "Cabin in the Woods" do their best, but this is a movie that thrives off a 90-minute run time. If the trailer shows the college kids in the cabin, that's a fraction of the whole picture and totally misses out on the point. Twitter is not your friend On that note, neither is the internet. This is a movie people will want to talk about, and nothing is going to stop them from pasting everything over Twitter and Facebook. If keeping the secrets secret means something to you, it's probably best to media fast until you see it. Just see the thing This is the point that should be stressed more than anything. See "The Cabin in the Woods." It is one of the most original and genuinely creative films to hit mainstream theaters in years. If you love movies, horror specifically, and you're looking for a fun time at the movies, it is just the movie that you need to see. Are you going to see "The Cabin in the Woods" this weekend? 23. By Andrés Marín Jay-Z's clothing line Rocawear, co-founded by the Brooklyn-bred rapper more than 10 years ago, has secured a new collaboration with the New York Yankees. The brand will be put on prominent display for baseball fans inside Yankee Stadium as part of an integrated promotions deal set to roll out this year. With Jay-Z being a long time Yankees fan, this deal was just natural, said Jameel Spencer, EVP of Marketing for Rocawear men's division. “Jay-Z has been a long-time fan of the Yankees, regularly attends games and has even included his favorite team in song lyrics, so this was a natural partnership,” he said. With Hov spitting lyrics like, "I made the Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee can"... on his hit "Empire State of Mind" his love for the team isn't really a secret. Ever the fan, Jay-Z even filmed his own personal video of Derek Jeter's 3,000th hit last year, recording from his seat on the 3rd baseline. Rocawear believes that they have a great power in creating culture in ways other than just music. The music-meets-fashion-meets-sports deal has Rocawear and Jay-Z very excited, not to mention predicting another championship this year. “Rocawear, along with Jay-Z are very excited to be working with the Yankees for the 2012 season," Spencer added. "We feel another championship in ‘12!” View the full article
24. The lead love interest for Richard LaGravenese's "Beautiful Creatures" — an adaptation of the young adult supernatural romance novel (also a series) by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl — has been replaced. Jack O'Connell has left the project due to scheduling conflicts, and Alden Ehrenreich is stepping in. The "Twixt" and "Tetro" actor will be starring as Ethan — in love with local girl Lena. Both teens uncover dark secrets about their families and the town they live in. Ethan also happens to have a nasty ex-girlfriend, who enacts some "Mean Girls-style" revenge against Lena. We previously reported that Jeremy Irons is also starring in the film, along with Viola Davis, Emma Thompson, Thomas Mann, and Emmy Rossum. Are you in the mood for a supernatural star-crossed lovers story, or have you had your fill of all things "Twilight-esque" for a while? Get the rest of this week's Horror Bites past the jump! A Pair of 'Freaks' Get Their Own Documentary Tod Browning's "Freaks" is an absolute classic that should be watched by all horror fans. The 1932 story follows the dramas and woes of a group of sideshow performers. Browning cast his film with real-life carnival performers, so the human anomalies you're seeing were not created with prosthetics. Deadline reports that Leslie and Robert Zemeckis will be teaming up for a documentary about the conjoined twins in the film, Daisy and Violet Hilton. The girls worked in wax museums, sideshows, and became notable vaudeville performers thanks to their unique singing and dancing act. Deadline notes that the pair were "exploited throughout their childhood until they eventually sued and won their freedom." Look out for the documentary "Bound By Flesh" sometime in 2013. Darker Version of 'Stand by Me' in the Works "When the Street Lights Go On" will be like an even more morbid "Stand by Me" according to Deadline. The coming of age tale focuses on a young boy who becomes obsessed with solving a murder case. Someone took the life of a girl in his sleepy town in 1982, and the case is impossible for him to let go of. The script comes from the Black List — the best of Hollywood's unproduced scripts — and will mark the debut of director Brett Morgen ("The Kid Stays in the Picture"). If morbid-minded children are your thing, then this one is for you. Remake of Italian Horror Classic 'Suspiria' Finally Gets Green Light "Pineapple Express" director David Gordon Green's remake of Italian horror classic "Suspiria" is finally underway. The project was previously rumored to star Natalie Portman as the American ballerina who visits a prestigious dance school in Germany only to find out that the academy is a cover for something deeply sinister. We're not sure if the Portman rumors are true since the star just played a dancer in "Black Swan," but we do know that Green will be looking for his leading lady soon. We hope he'll cast "The House of the Devil" star Jocelin Donahue who has the right look for "Suspiria's" fairy tale world, big talent, and the bravery necessary to plumb the depths of darkness. Who would you cast? 'The Innkeepers' Director Scratching Up Script for 'Bedbug' Adaptation Speaking of "The House of the Devil," director Ti West will be writing a script for urban paranoia tale "Bedbugs." The critters that love to hide in mattresses and become your living, crawling souvenirs when you travel to fleabag motels far and wide will be featured in the "slow-burning supernatural story" West is adapting for the big screen. It's based on Ben H. Winters’ bestselling horror novel set in Brooklyn. A family moves into a new home and encounters strange activity. The Mrs. starts to find what she thinks are bedbug bites on her body, but she's the only one getting them. Is she insane? A menacing surprise reveals all, eventually. We hope West also directs, but Deadline hasn't confirmed as of yet. Cue scratching forever times infinity. 'Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter' Writer Chats 'Beetlejuice 2' "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" and "Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter" writer Seth Grahame-Smith recently chatted about working with Tim Burton, "Beetlejuice 2," "Night of the Living Dead," and more. On the follow-up to the tale about a ghostly couple that haunts their former home where an angsty goth girl and her obnoxious family have taken up residence, the scribe shared: "The 'Beetlejuice' sequel will come after 'Unholy Night' in my schedule. The first opportunity to tackle that will probably be later this year." "Unholy Night" is part of his "Three Wise Kings" trilogy, which puts an action-adventure spin on the biblical figures that protect Mary and baby Jesus. The book just hit shelves a few days ago, but the story is already in development for a feature film at Warner Bros. "Beetlejuice" almost got a sequel (in Hawaii, according to a 1997 interview in Fangoria — and thank goodness that never happened), but it will be interesting to see what kind of spin Grahame-Smith can put on the horror-comedy. Read the full interview at THR. 'Full Metal Jacket' Star Gets Homicidal with Linkin Park We love when "Full Metal Jacket" star Vincent D'Onofrio gets creepy. The "Law & Order" actor will be executive producing and starring in Joe Hahn's "Mall." Hahn is Linkin Park's DJ who has directed a ton of the band's music videos and has soundtracked a number of big projects. The dark indie pic follows "the empty and sordid lives of various mall-goers which are brought into stark relief when a disgruntled former tuxedo shop employee goes on a massive killing spree," according to Dread Central. As you probably predicted by now, Linkin Park will be providing the soundtrack for the movie. Gemma Arterton Cast as Violent BFF in 'The Wright Girls' "Clash of the Titans" actress Gemma Arterton has been cast for "The Wright Girls." This is the project that Megan Fox was rumored for, originally. The comedy-thriller finds two young actress hopefuls that room together. Although they pretend to be besties and are co-stars on a popular TV show, they hate each other in reality and will go to violent lengths to stop the other from getting a part in an upcoming movie role. The other actress may end up being Fox, but THR swears their sources confirm she's not interested. The script comes from "Easy A" writer Bert Royal, so expect two hours of snarky, snappy banter, and bitchiness. Excited? 25. By Gil Kaufman We all miss Nate Dogg. The Long Beach hook master died a year ago at age 41 after several years of health problems. And if you listened to MTV News' Sway Calloway's Shade45 "Sway in the Morning" show on Thursday (April 12) you might have gotten a bit choked up when Warren G's "Regulate" came on. Nate Dogg Remembered One Year Later But the reason Sway chose that classic was because of the rumors that the big Dogg might make a return engagement this weekend at the Coachella Festival during a set from Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kurupt, G and Daz Dillinger. That on-stage combo is historic enough, but TMZ reported that Nate Dogg will join his boys for several songs in the form of a hologram. We're not sure how that's gonna look, but we're wondering what you think about that virtual cameo? Is it creepy, or kind of legit? Let us know if you are down with the virtual Nate Dogg hologram in comments below. And peep the full Coachella lineup.
