Will Frank Ocean's new sexual declaration affect the sales of his upcoming Def Jam debut Channel Orange? There's a good chance that it might. When Frank Ocean released his acclaimed Nostalgia Ultra mixtape via Tumblr last year, details on the shy and mysterious singer/songwriter were scarce. But when he drops his Def Jam debut Channel Orange on July 17, that anonymity will be no more. In addition to the many fans Ocean has picked up in the past year, his recent sexual revelation has now made him a hot search topic. Via a Tumblr post, in which he shared the liner notes for his album, Ocean detailed an intimate relationship he had with a man at age 19, putting to rest assumptions that the New Orleans native was heterosexual. In the days that followed, Ocean was praised by his peers — including Odd Future ringleader Tyler, the Creator, Beyoncé and Russell Simmons — and supported by his mother and fans, but a whole new crop of potential consumers learned his name as well. There hasn't been a major promotional push behind Ocean's album yet (save for some very private listening sessions and a commercial that aired during the BET Awards) but when news of his coming out spread across Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter, those who had not previously heard his music were interested enough to start clicking frantically on his name. Official projections for his first-week album sales cannot be confirmed yet, but Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts at Billboard, thinks Ocean's revelation could draw more curious eyes to the Odd Future crooner and more ears to his music. "American Idol" alum Adam Lambert is one of the most recent gay pop stars to have a #1 album, but things work differently on the urban-music front, Caulfield said. "For Frank, it's different. He's in the R&B and hip-hop world, and he's relatively under the radar to most people, but this is important, especially in light of Anderson Cooper," Caulfield said, citing the CNN anchor's recent revelation. "On one hand, it could give him visibility that he didn't have before, because suddenly people are writing about him and headlines with his name are coming across people's Facebook and Twitter dashboard and they're wondering, 'Who is this dude? Let me read about him, let me listen to his music, I've never heard of him before now,' so it could help. No one in R&B music who's that huge, or could be huge, has ever been frank, so to speak, about their sexuality in this way." Ocean was rather careful and poetic in the way he revealed the news, not addressing whether he considers himself bisexual or homosexual, but Caulfield thinks it was a good move to make at this point in his career. "It's better to do it now instead of two or three albums into your career when you have all this pressure mounting on you to be a ladies man and to sing all these songs to women in your videos," Caulfield continued. "Everyone knows that there are rumors and allegations haunting some celebrities in the closet, and they've had to continue a career fronting something else. "People were anticipating that the album was going to debut in the top 10 on the Billboard 200 charts, but the jury is still out as to how his recent news will affect his first week," he added, noting that official sales predictions will be available July 18, the day after Channel Orange is released. The hearing, which would see Dotcom and alleged co-conspirators Mathias Ortmann, Finn Batato and Bram van der Kolk protest their extradition to the United States, was originally scheduled to take place next month in Auckland. It was the moment VH1 viewers were waiting for. Estranged castmember Stevie J of the much talked about VH1 reality series "Love & Hip-Hop" went toe to toe with Lil Scrappy after a confrontation over Stevie insulting Scrap's main squeeze Erica. While security managed to swiftly end the brawl, Stevie J vowed to get back at Scrappy soon enough for the fight that also involved his pregnant mistress Joseline. Last month Lil Scrappy visited the RapFix Live set and touched on the seriousness of last nights episode. "It was a situation; it was a real situation," Scrap said when he appeared on "RapFix Live." According to Scrappy, the argument began after Stevie disrespected recurring castmember Erica, Scrappy's child's mother. The ATL MC feels that if Stevie had a problem with Erica, he should've bypassed her and addressed Scrappy instead. "Like I told him, you can walk off, you don't gotta disrespect no female," he said. Last Wednesday the Odd Future singer/songwriter sent shockwaves through the music industry when he revealed that he once had a love affair with a man and after much conversation, analysis and speculation, Ocean finally released his major label debut Channel Orange one week before it’s July 17 scheduled release. The digital drop came hours before Ocean’s scheduled appearance on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.” Andre 3000, John Mayer and Frank’s Wolf Gang cohort Earl Sweatshirt all appear on the LP which also features production from Pharrell Williams. What doesn’t appear on Channel Orange however is the passage that Ocean posted on his Tumblr last week where he revealed that his first true love affair was with another man when he was 19 years old. The “Thinkin Bout You” singer said that he originally intended the tell-all to appear in his album’s liner notes, but it is no where to be found on the digital booklet that comes with the iTunes release. The 2012 Essence Music Festival successfully capped another year celebrating the African American culture in the New Orleans area. Artists including Mary J. Celebrity friends and fans have been sending their prayers to Usher and his ex-wife Tameka Raymond after a jet ski accident which left their 11-year-old son Kyle Glover (Usher's stepson) brain dead, and MTV News has some more details on the accident that took place on Friday. The incident report, obtained by MTV News from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, identified Jeffrey S. Hubbard as the vehicle's operator. According to the report, Hubbard was operating the watercraft in Atlanta's Lake Lanier when he ran over two juveniles being towed on an inner tube by another boat at approximately 3:25 p.m. ET on Friday. Both of the injured children were flown to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. While the incident report didn't identify any of the injured by name, it has been reported that 11-year-old Kyle Glover sustained a head injury and had been declared brain dead by doctors, but officials have declined to speak on his condition, citing privacy issues. The second victim, a 15-year-old girl, is said to have suffered a cut on the head and a broken arm. A media representative at Georgia's DNR told MTV News that Hubbard was no stranger to Glover and that he was a friend of the family. Glover's mother, Tameka Foster, spoke to RadarOnline, simply saying, "He's bad." According to the site, the distraught mom also took to her Facebook page to send this message: "Kyle, You are strong.. You'll be saved I know it. I love you my baby. I need all #Prayers for my son! thanks you everybody!" Foster and Usher were married in 2007, but divorced two years later in 2009 and are currently going through a custody battle. They are both reportedly at the hospital. Well, today another face has joined the Panem world — and it's quite a famous, Oscar-winning face. Lionsgate announced in a press release that [url="http://www.mtv.com/movies/person/28930/personmain.jhtml"]Philip Seymour Hoffman[/url] has been cast in the role of Plutarch Heavensbee, the Head Gamemaker for the Quarter Quell games in "Catching Fire." The news doesn't come as a total surprise as it was reported back in mid-June that [url="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1687154/hunger-games-catching-fire-philip-seymour-hoffman.jhtml"]Hoffman had been offered the role[/url], and now it looks like things are finally official. This particular casting news comes just about a week after Jena Malone was [url="http://hollywoodcrush.mtv.com/2012/07/03/jena-malone-catching-fire-johanna-mason/"]reportedly offered the role of Johanna Mason[/url], the tough young woman and former victor, who Katniss and Peeta first meet in the second installment. [url="http://www.mtv.com/movies/movie/422817/moviemain.jhtml"]"The Hunger Games"[/url] gave us a fair amount of behind-the-scenes moments with previous Head Gamemaker Seneca Crane, so it'll be interesting to see if that same approach is followed when Hoffman's Heavensbee takes the helm in this follow-up film. While the series really hangs on the shoulders of [url="http://www.mtv.com/movies/person/1015040/personmain.jhtml"]Jennifer Lawrence[/url] as the young lead, the way the various adult actors in the "Hunger Games" film-verse, including [url="http://www.mtv.com/movies/person/26961/personmain.jhtml"]Woody Harrelson[/url], [url=""http://www.mtv.com/movies/person/63387/personmain.jhtml"]Stanley Tucci[/url], [url="http://www.mtv.com/movies/person/34761/personmain.jhtml"]Lenny Kravitz[/url] and [url="http://www.mtv.com/movies/person/256876/personmain.jhtml"]Elizabeth Banks[/url], brought their unique characters to life all helped author Suzanne Collins' intricate world pop on the big screen. It'll definitely be fun to see how the uber-talented Hoffman carves out his own niche. As with any Hunger Games casting, it brings to mind the famous "Hunger Games" line: "May the odds be ever in your favor." Any actor taking on the monumental task of living up to fans' expectations can surely appreciate the sentiment, but for Hoffman and the others, we predict that the odds will be pretty solid. By Rob Markman 50 Cent celebrated his birthday by dropping his unofficial album 5 (Murder by Numbers) last Friday, and the G-Unit CEO sat down with MTV News to break down the significance of his latest project. "What I'm releasing right now is a part of me wanting music out during the middle of the summer," Fif told MTV News. "I had a plan for myself: I wanted to have the new record come out during my birthday." Over the course of the last year, the G-Unit boss has gone through a number of ups and downs with his label, Interscope. Fif's next album, Street King Immortal, will be his fifth solo album with the label and the last in his contractual requirement. Since the LP isn't due until later this year, 50 decided to drum up some excitement on the mixtape scene, which he revolutionized with classic projects like 50 Cent Is the Future and God's Plan. "Everyone's waiting for my fifth studio album through Interscope, so I titled it that because it will build interest in the actual project," he said of 5. Marked by hard-nosed tracks like the Sizzla-sampling, dancehall-tinged "My Crown" and hometown ode "NY," Murder by Numbers proves that Fif hasn't lost his penchant for making raw and uncut street music. It's a different type of project, one that could easily get misunderstood by a powerhouse rap label, so it requires a more underground distribution method. "I don't really need label support for this project," the music mogul argued. "It's about the actual music, and I don't think people buy what record label you're on; I think they buy music or buy into the actual artist themselves." The success of the gratis 5 can't be measured in album sales, but 50 said he will feel justified in his creativity when he hears his music blasting out of the cars of his faithful following. The fans' approval is the only one that he seeks. The texture of tracks like the money-getting hymn "Business Mind" and smoker-fest "Roll That Sh--" are ripe for the warm weather, Fif says. "I don't think this music will be the same if I introduce it in the winter. I think it's for right now, so I'm putting it out regardless," he said. As far as his next solo LP, the one that has been talked about since he released Before I Self Destruct in 2009, 50 is looking for an end-of-the-year drop now that he has cleared up all issues with Interscope. "They're in full support of me now. We cleared up audit issues. That's always an issue, when you get to the final album or the final requirement you end up going through the books with everything that you've done," he said. "Once those things are resolved, everyone is ready to get back to work, and that's where we're at."
