3. Usher’s 11-year-old stepson is currently in critical condition after a disastrous jet ski accident in Atlanta on Friday (July 6). Kyle Glover, son of the R&B singer's ex-wife Tameka Raymond was hit by a jet ski while riding on an inner tube with a friend on Lake Lanier in Atlanta. The 11-year-old and a 15-year-old girl friend were riding the inner tube on the lake when a 38-year-old man riding jet skis struck them, hitting Glover in the head. He was unresponsive at the scene, and was airlifted to Egelston Hospital where he remains in critical condition. The girl, who was also transported to the hospital immediately, received a cut on a head and treatment for a broken arm. Several celebrities have sent best wishes to the family via Twitter, including Questlove who wrote, “wishing @TamekaRaymond's son godspeed recovery. horrible news to hear.” Atlanta's 11 Alive reports that it's too early for cops to tell whether or not charges will be filed. Usher and his ex-wife have been going through a very public and messy divorce, but that will likely take a backseat after this unfortunate incident. 6. We’ve all the seen the scenes in movies. The gallant hero tied to a chair, overlooked by a cruel interrogator flanked by two armed and burly minders. The blinding spotlight tears into his eyes, the cold steel of his binding chains weighs him down as much as the responsibility ahead. But when his captor lays it on the line, explaining in graphic detail what will follow should his non-compliance continue, his response is valiant. He spits in his tormentor’s face and laughs out loud, accepting his fate and resigning himself to history. Well, that’s for the movies and in the cold light of day, on lesser matters than saving an entire nation or the life of a loved one, human responses are rarely so honorable. On Friday it was revealed that file-hosting service Oron had agreed in principle to settle a lawsuit with adult studio Liberty Media. Part of that deal was to not only hand over alleged copyright infringers, but also help with their prosecution. There was almost universal shock and outrage at this news, but why anyone should be surprised at Oron’s actions is well, a bit of a surprise really. Snitching on pirates has been going on for as long as someone has been interested in punishing them. So what motivates people to turn informant? In Oron’s case the motivation appears to be straightforward self-preservation. With a potentially ruinous lawsuit hanging over their head, this file-locker has chosen to feed a small number of customers to the hungry copyright lions at Liberty Media. But if you think Oron are alone, think again. In March we reported that the UFC had taken down Greenfeedz, a site offering illicit streams of UFC events. But as part of the arrangement it now transpires that Greenfeedz handed over the personal details over people who merely viewed UFC events via the site. Fifteen of those are now being hunted down in Zuffa, LLC v. DOES 1-15 Skin-saving is a common theme with file-sharing informants. Although he was only hired as a coder for streaming links site SurfTheChannel, in 2011 Boston resident Brendan DeBeasi soon found himself facing a charge of conspiracy to commit copyright infringement and with it a five year prison sentence and $250,000 fine. In the end he never served a day, instead preferring to work out a deal with the authorities to testify against the operators of SurfTheChannel. But for every case like this we hear about, there a potentially dozens more. Remember EliteTorrents, the first BitTorrent site to be raided in the United States and its admins and uploaders jailed? FBI documents handed to TorrentFreak by a reader researching the case appear to show that someone very close to the site was working with the MPAA as early as February 15th, weeks before the FBI received the official complaint on March 1st and months before the actual raid. Who the person was and why they did what they did remains a mystery, but it’s quite possible they were under pressure to save their own skin. But there are other motivations for turning informant too. The UK’s Federation Against Software Theft runs a so-called “grass hotline” where people can inform on their companies for using under licensed software. FAST rely on two human traits to gather information on targets – greed (informants can get paid) and the lust for revenge. Reportedly, FAST snitches are often ex-employees with a grudge. And grudges are dangerous things, particularly in the world of private BitTorrent trackers. On two occasions last month TorrentFreak was approached by clearly angry individuals who asked us to report on alleged wrong doing at a pair of trackers, one very small, one very large. The motivation obviously wasn’t money or to save the person’s skin, it was born out of conflict and desire to do damage. But whether it’s to make money, save money, avoid lawsuits, avoid prison or execute revenge, people are prepared to inform on file-sharers. So don’t be too surprised when you hear about it again – and again. 7. By Rob Markman Frank Ocean used his Tumblr account to share a private part of his life this week. He detailed falling in love for the first time, with a man, and since then some fans have wondered if his sexual declaration would affect his group Odd Future. We asked a few hip-hop experts for their thoughts on the matter. With a name like Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, you'd think Tyler, the Creator and his merry band of musical misfits have a certain level of camaraderie. In the crew's formative stages, they created an us-against-them atmosphere, throwing barbs at anyone who didn't fully support their endeavors. It'll be foolish to think that after Frank Ocean wrote about his love affair with a man that anything would change within OFWGKTA, right? "I think Frank and Tyler fit in perfectly together," Paula Renfroe, editor in chief of Juicy magazine, told MTV News. "I actually love that when Frank posted his Tumblr that Tyler still took jabs at him like he's his man. He didn't change the way he spoke to him just because he made people aware of who his first love was." Frank Ocean's Sexual Declaration: Will It Spark Change In Hip-Hop Community? Odd Future — and particularly the crew's de facto leader Tyler, the Creator — have been painted by many as homophobic. Most of it is due to how frequently Wolf Gang's head throws around words like "faggot," "gay" and his own slang term "sus" on Twitter and, at times, in his music. So after Ocean posted on Tumblr that he had at least once fell in love with a man, many wondered how the group would be affected internally. "My big brother finally f---ing did that," Tyler tweeted on Wednesday. "Proud of that n---a cause I know that sh-- is difficult or whatever. Anyway. I'm a toilet." Not that homosexuality is anything new for the crew: Syd tha Kyd is a lesbian. "I think Odd Future and Frank Ocean are probably tighter than they ever been. You can't be homophobic and have a lesbian in crew. I can't see how you can have that," said Vibe executive editor Datwon Thomas. "I think Tyler does it for shock value. Of course, I think he knows it's still a word that stings or still a concept that stings." Jerry Portwood, executive editor of Out magazine, doesn't believe the members of OF are anti-gay either, no matter how inappropriate they may come off to others. "People really want Odd Future to be homophobic. When we profiled Syd the Kyd and talked to her about using the other F-word, which is faggot, people got really angry with us," he said. "I think Frank, Tyler, Syd — a lot of times, I think they're saying what they say to their friends, what their friends are saying, what we say to each other, but we're not supposed to say in front of a camera or be recorded saying. I respect that." Vibe editor in chief Jermaine Hall agreed and went on to question why Tyler should change who he is simply to make people more comfortable. "They're boys, they're family. Why should he change up the way he addresses Frank?" View the full article

 16. Kanye West and his G.O.O.D. Music team are gearing up to drop their Cruel Summer album in the next few weeks, but 'Ye appeared sans crew last night (save for a very brief appearance from Pusha T) taking his stage show above and far beyond for a solo set at Revel Resort in Atlantic City. With the release of his "Power" music video in 2010, it became clear that Kanye West's art aesthetic is ever-evolving. And when he put on a rare solo show at the Revel Resort in Atlantic City on Friday night (July 6), his use of imagery, sound and dancers gave audience members the feeling of being briefly transported into one of his music videos. 'Ye fueled subtle elements from his statement-making clips into an unforgettable live show that found him running through songs as new as this week's "New God Flow" and classic as "Through The Wire." West once described his "Power" music video as "a moving painting," and when the show began suddenly with a burst of color, energy and searing imagery, it all seemed to make sense. With a grandiose opening, fitting for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy's epic intro track, the stage was flooded with dancers clad in nude feathered leotards, while the beat from "H.A.M." lingered for a few moments, and finally "Dark Fantasy" dropped, with 'Ye rising above the stage on an elevated platform. "Can we get much higher?" resonated from the speakers, with bass shaking the floors, and 'Ye hovered above the crowd while his dancers waited patiently until he made his way to the main stage. The background featured etched imagery of tortured figures that look like they've been carved out of a church wall, and throughout the show, the screen is lit in a variety of colors that complement every song. An entrance of that size could only lead into "Power," and then 'Ye spit some lines from his new G.O.O.D. Music single "New God Flow." "Went from being the most hated to the God flow/ I guess that's a feeling only me and LeBron know," he rapped energetically, before dipping into classics like "Jesus Walks" and "Can't Tell Me Nothing" (which he stopped and restarted after telling the crowd, "This is my favorite song I ever did"). Other highlights of the night came during his performance of "Diamonds." In addition to the multitude of Roc signs in the air, the lights onstage formed dotted diamond outlines that prompted some flashbacks to the lighting effects in the Throne's recent "N---as in Paris" video. "Monster" and "Flashing Lights" drew big reactions from the crowd, and the dancers returned in full force for "Love Lockdown," striking dramatic poses on the beat, but no Kanye West concert is complete without one of the eccentric musician's monologues. This one, delivered during 808s & Heartbreak's "Say You Will." found him upset over a girl who blew him off for the night, the perfect segue into "Heartless." Whatever songs the fans may have been feeling most during the night, it was clear Kanye's favorite was "Cold," which he delivered twice, adding in a few teasing words the second time. "As a man, I'm not perfect, but my music is," he told the crowd, laughing at himself. "This is the best you will ever get. I'm not saying that in an arrogant way. I'm saying that in a factual way." Well over an hour into the show, Yeezy had plenty of energy left, telling the crowd he was ready to "get the show started," launching into "Gold Digger" and "All of the Lights," relaying a story about how The-Dream helped him come up with the song's hook. He wasn't joking about having more tricks up his sleeve, either, saving one of the biggest moments of the night for "Runaway." Using poles, swaying along to instrumental music, his dancers held up a white sheet, rustling it back-and-forth until they finally removed it to reveal 'Ye clad in all red leather on the stage. He stood at a synthesizer, tapping out the notes to "Runaway," while the dancers convulsed around him, and Pusha T joined him as the only feature of the night. "Runaway" brought the memorable set to a climax, rolling right into "Lost in the World," with the dancers banging out their interpretive moves, much like in the video. And, after the energy mounted to fever pitch, Kanye brought things back down to calm, closing out the show with "Hey Mama," an ode to his late mother Donda West. West will perform a second show at Revel Resort on Saturday (July 7). View the full article

 18. By Rebecca Thomas D'Angelo made headlines last month when he joined Questlove onstage at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Tennessee for a surprise jam session, and the veteran singer continued his comeback with a full performance at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans on Friday night. I couldn't help but think there was something poignant about D'Angelo taking the stage for the latest in a season of comeback concerts in the same week that Frank Ocean had seized the news cycle for his game-changing personal revelation. Kindred musical spirits: one ahead of his time, the other firmly a product of his time. More than 15 years before Ocean was hailed as a radical voice poised to remake the oft-beleaguered genre known as rhythm and blues, Michael Eugene Archer became a messianic figure, sent down to save our (neo) souls from the hackneyed bump-and-grind of R&B with his 1995 debut, Brown Sugar. So maybe it's just me, but the moment feels right for the now-38-year-old to be reemerging. If fans were expecting the Richmond, Virginia-born singer to bask in the nostalgia of his classic first LP, though, they were disappointed. Taking the stage without any fanfare, he dove into his cover of Roberta Flack's "Feel Like Makin' Love," off his sophomore disc, Voodoo. And it was instantly clear that D'Angelo and his raucous band were less concerned with faithful renditions of the well-aged tracks than with turning the songs on their heads. Still, at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, where swag included tote bags emblazoned with the 59-year-old mug of the night's headliner Charlie Wilson, D's highly instrumental approach to his set didn't always gibe with the room. But for die-hards, who largely skewed younger, the singer was mesmerizing. (One row in front of us, Destiny's Child alums Michelle Williams and LaToya Luckett, along with rising star Luke James, were as enthralled as we were, dancing during much of the show.) While D'Angelo rightfully dug into material that will probably appear on James River, his first album in a dozen years, he also dusted off his hits. There was the bewitching "Devil's Pie" and the blissfully profane "Sh--, Damn, Mother------," which he drew out to Church Revival lengths, even leaving the stage for a few moments before returning to cap off the coda. The chiseled, cornrow-rocking D'Angelo of the late '90s is now a thing of a bygone era, tossed into the archives of the "neo-soul" movement that birthed him. For Friday's show, D tied a black bandanna around his unruly mass of locks for a look that seemed inspired by pirates and Hendrix. So we shouldn't have been surprised that for "Untitled" (How Does It Feel), the massive single now synonymous with his break with the music industry, there were no panties thrown and no abs shown. Instead, the all-black clad D'Angelo sat at the keys and ran through a subdued verse as the ecstatic crowd sang along. He seemed eager to get it over with, the song perhaps too much of a reminder of a time when he buckled under the weight of sex symboldom, disappearing for nearly a decade into a haze of addiction and personal demons. It was on the anthemic "Lady," though, that D came alive. With the concertgoers on their feet, he let himself smile, soaring on his falsetto on that infectious hook. In the mid-'90s, lyrics like this had put D'Angelo squarely ahead of his time: "Babe, I know they've seen us before/ Maybe at the liquor store / Or maybe at the health food stand / They don't know that I'm your man." Then only 21 years old, his songwriting was both conversational and reflective, a rare combo in R&B. Now, as he shakes off the weight of his past, D'Angelo seems poised to grab his place again. 20. By James Dinh Destiny's Child back? Beyonce, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams have been focused on their solo careers over the past few years, but fans will be lucky to catch some previously unheard material from the trio later this year. Almost a decade after their last full-length studio effort, Destiny Fulfilled, Mathew Knowles — DC's longtime ringleader — has revealed that previously unreleased material from the group will appear on two compilation releases via his Music World Entertainment label partnership with Sony. "We still have our joint venture with Sony, and in November, we're putting out two Destiny's Child catalog records with new material," Knowles told The Huffington Post when asked about his label's upcoming plans. Beyond the new tunes, the group's back-in-the-day manager also spoke about the possibility of a DC3 reunion tour, emphasizing that a trek wouldn't occur until the second release drops and if it fits in with each of the stars' respective solo careers. "It takes a year of planning to do these tours, but first it starts with the artist wanting to do it. And I think the ladies are still working happily in their solo careers," he explained, adding, "And I hope in the next five years that there is a reunion tour. I think it would be incredible." What would be harder than getting Beyoncé, Kelly and Michelle to simultaneously devote time to a Destiny's Child tour? Well, according to Mathew, that wouldn't be the biggest challenge. "The hardest thing would be choosing which songs they're going to do, because we would want to mix it up with solo hits and Destiny's Child hits. We would have to throw away some #1's from off the set list," Knowles said. But until Destiny's Child decide it's time to relive the glory days, fans will have to sit back and enjoy each of the women's continuous solo endeavors. With Beyoncé inching her way back into the spotlight after the birth of her first child, Kelly appears to be the busiest out of the threesome, with a mentoring gig on Australian reality series "Everybody Dance Now" alongside Jason Derülo and a brand-new musical chapter with the release of her Lil Wayne-assisted single "Ice." As for Michelle, the diva is currently venturing into the fashion industry and will be designing a clothing line in partnership with African brand Koshie O. 21. After his sentence was made final earlier this year, Pirate Bay co-founder Peter Sunde was due to go prison early May. However, due to various delays, he has yet to be committed to confinement. This week in a final attempt to maintain his freedom, Sunde asked for a pardon. According to his lawyer, Sunde is suffering from serious mental health problems and being sent to prison would only worsen them. It is further being reported that the head of the company where Sunde works – believed to be micro-payment company Flattr – has informed the court that if Sunde is imprisoned as planned, he will lose his job with the company. Of most impact to those who have been following the Pirate Bay case, Sunde wrote the plea himself. The full 4000 word letter was published earlier this week on Sunde’s blog and has been translated to English by Rick Falkvinge. “I ask pardon for a judicial system that has been steamrolled over by lobbyism and ignorance. But ultimately, I ask pardon for our future culture and communication. My case has significant impact on these,” Sunde starts his plea. What follows is Sunde’s view on the controversial case – how he got involved in The Pirate Bay and how he was dragged into the criminal investigation and subsequently punished for crimes that never occurred. Many of the issues mentioned by the former Pirate Bay spokesperson have been covered on TorrentFreak before, but when they are put together it makes all the more impact. According to Sunde Hollywood went to extreme lengths to make an example out of him, while abusing the Swedish legal system. While he understands that there’s a slim chance of getting what he wants, he ends the plea with a request for clemency. “I know that I’m at a point where I have less than a tenth of a percent’s chance of escaping punishment. Not having to go to jail for crimes I didn’t commit. Crimes that weren’t even committed in the first place. Crimes that surely aren’t even crimes to begin with, if they had been committed, and if they had been committed, hadn’t been so by me. It’s a bizarre situation with my distance to any real criminal liability,” Sunde writes. Sunde’s determinedness to stand up for his ideals of free sharing and culture have left emotional scars, but also bankrupted him. “And once I’m out of jail, where I’m certainly going to become increasingly bitter over the situation, I have a debt of 100 million Swedish Kroner (11 million euro). Money in fantasy numbers, supposed to ‘compensate’ for aiding and abetting the assistance of a theoretically possible crime I’m supposed to have done by doing things that didn’t happen.” “An economic debt to some of the world’s richest corporations. A debt that practically means I don’t have a future in Sweden as a country, if I want to live off of anything other than breadcrumbs or the goodwill of my friends. This debt is equivalent to exile, to deportation. I will need to become an economic refugee from Sweden,” Sunde adds. The Pirate Bay co-founder ends by noting that while his conviction may please Hollywood, it goes against the will of the population. A population where millions are active users of The Pirate Bay. The pardon is also for them, according to Sunde. “This bizarre situation is one that authorities in Sweden close their eyes to. It is an insult to everything the judicial system is supposed to represent. It is a shame for the entire population. A population that doesn’t even share the opinions behind the laws I’m convicted of breaking. And it’s these things that I ask that all of us be pardoned from,” Sunde writes. “They lost faith in the justice system with all the bias, all the obvious corruption, the unconstitutional orders across branches of government that was never investigated, all the ugly tactics that have been used to satisfy a trading partner high on its own power. Sweden’s judicial system has sold out individuals. That is not supposed to happen in a democracy.” “Grant the people of Sweden pardon from this corruption,” Sunde concludes.
