1. An odd holiday release schedule broke this week's programming into three different openings for three different movies, but as we head into the weekend, MTV Movies Blog has your movie pairings for everything that came out this week. Read on for this week's Double Feature Friday! "The Amazing Spider-Man" & "(500) Days of Summer" These two films don't play well together simply because Marc Webb directed both of them. The shared quality does, however, explain the more important aspect that they share. I wrote about it briefly in my review of "The Amazing Spider-Man," but Webb's only two feature films contain two of the most emotionally honest and unabashedly cute movie romances of the last few years. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone's on-screen chemistry will definitely stir up any left over feelings you may have for the days when Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Tom and Zooey Deschanel's Summer first met. "Savages" & "Band of Outsiders" Blake Lively, Taylor Kitsch, and Aaron Johnson are far from the first cinematic ménage à trois to turn to violence. Jean-Luc Godard made that cool all the way back in 1964 with "Bande à part." The movie follows two buddy criminals who fall for the same girl. Jealousies come to a head while the trio plans to rob the young lady's own house. The French New Wave film became a huge influence on later generations of filmmakers, including Quentin Tarantino, who named his production company after Godard's movie. "Katy Perry: Part of Me" & "The Last Waltz" There are few concert films as essential as Martin Scorsese's documentary about The Band's final performance. Not only did "The Last Waltz" revolutionize the way filmmakers capture concerts, but the show's line-up alone merits at least one viewing. Where else are you going to see the original line-up for The Band, Bob Dylan, Neils Young and Diamond all together on one stage? What are you watching this weekend? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter! If one movie is never enough for you and you're looking for a flick to get you in the mood for this week's new release, Double Feature Friday is here to help. 4. Harpers Bazaar By Miranda Johnson Most people would assume that Rihanna is a fearless, risk-taking diva, but the Bajan beauty revealed one huge precaution she takes in her life, in her cover feature for the August issue of Harper's Bazaar. Known for living life on the edge and constantly expressing it all, Rih Rih admits that she finds herself reluctant to indulge in one area of life: love. "[I'm] rebellious through my music, through my fashion, tattoos, and my hair," Rihanna told the magazine, adding, "I have been conservative in my love life… it’s pretty much nonexistent. If I come across someone who I find really cool, I’ll hang out. But the minute I find that we’re getting too close I just — I don’t let people in." Rih then explained, "When I was in love, I fell so hard. The way it made me feel was priceless. And in a blink of an eye my whole life changed. Everything that I knew was different. I never thought I’d feel that pain in my life. I’m afraid of feeling that again." Although Rihanna admits she's certainly hesitant with her heart, please believe she picks up the slack in other departments. One of which is fashion and she surely flexes those skills on the dual covers of the August issue of Harper's Bazaar. Rocking killer snake skin boots in one and a sexy white silk dress in the other, Rihanna shows once again she's a fashion force to be reckoned with....flaws and all. 5. Comic-Con 2012 is rapidly approaching, and you know what that means: wish lists! Everyone on the MTV Movies team is pumped for a whole host of panels and events this year, but if I'm being honest, it's not the big screen that has me most excited. I'm keeping my eye firmly on the television panels, where "Fringe" will have its last-ever Comic-Con presence; "Game of Thrones" will tease us for season three in all of its gut-wrenching glory; and, if we're all good little boys and girls, we'll get a taste of the sweet blue stuff that is "Breaking Bad." (If that panel shows even an iota of the season five premiere's cold open, I guarantee that people will go up in smoke quicker than Tuco Salamanca's drug den.) But that's just what I'm looking forward to at Comic-Con this year. Keep reading to find out what all of our friends in the blogosphere can't wait for! » Katey Rich is the Editor-in-Chief of Cinema Blend, and she and her mighty team of five are excited to be covering Comic Con with more man (and woman) power than ever before. More than anything Katey is excited to catch the panel for Neill Blomkamp's Elysium, because it's something she knows the least about, and therefore has the most potential to be an awesome surprise. » Kristal Bailey returns to Comic Con for the 7th time and couldn't be more excited! Each year provides new surprises, big news and this looks to be like no exception. She and Brian Rudloff, the amazing duo from Screen Invasion, are most looking forward to the Community panel and the rest of the TV slate coming to SD. With The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and True Blood all having major panels, geek TV is going strong. The movie front is shaping up nicely too, with highlights including Iron Man 3, Dredd, and Pacific Rim. » Jim Littler from ComicBookMovie.com had it easy when picking out his highlights, saying, "It’s a no-brainer what we'll be interested in seeing at Comic-Con this year… All the Comic Book Movie oriented panels--with a particular interest in Disney's/Marvel's IRON MAN 3 and THOR 2 offerings, as well as MAN OF STEEL?!! Plus, a personal favorite is THE VENTURE BROS." » Rob Keyes from Screen Rant is anxious to see the year's two biggest panels happening on Saturday in Hall H where we all hope to get our first real look at Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim and Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. Those two films combined with The Hobbit and a potential presentation about Godzilla make that the panel to be at. On the Disney/Marvel side, the Iron Man 3 presentation also has a chance to steal the show if President Kevin Feige comes prepared to lay down major announcements regarding "Phase 2" of the Marvel cinematic universe. Bring us some Ant-Man, Black Panther and Guardians of the Galaxy! » Matt Patches at Hollywood.com can't decide if he's more excited for Sony's Elysium panel or Nickelodeon's The Legend of Korra panel. He's been waiting patiently for any look at director Neill Blomkamp's long-awaited District 9 follow-up that's not bald Matt Damon standing around on set, and really, who doesn't want a taste of epic sci-fi at Comic-Con? But going cold turkey on Legend of Korra post-season one finale…well, the panel may be the fix he needs to survive. » This year at SDCC, the io9 team is excited to see that fantasy is pretty much ruling the con. With The Hobbit coming up, and Game of Thrones still going strong, there's no doubt that this is the year of foam swords and armor in San Diego. We're psyched for the original science fiction too -- we'll be checking out Guillermo Del Toro's giant monsters in Pacific Rim, getting the latest on the superintelligent computer in Person of Interest, and visiting a post-apocalyptic world with no computers at all with Eric Kripke's new series Revolution. We'll be covering everything from comics and movies, to books and TV, so keep your eyes on io9 at SDCC 2012! » Kevin Polowy, NextMovie and Film.com editor and resident DJ, is eager to trek to 2012 Comic-Con to see how Martin Freeman and friends measure up to Hobbits past (get it? Short joke), hear how many times Quentin Tarantino uses the word "awesome" over the course of the one-hour "Django Unchained" panel (over/under: 16), and once again gorge on those disgustingly delicious Mexican eggrolls at that one place on 1st Ave (Mexican eggrolls!). » ComingSoon.net and SuperHeroHype's Edward Douglas is looking forward to the entire Warner Bros. panel, since we've seen absolutely nothing from Zack Snyder's Man of Steel and very little from Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, two of what should be the coolest movies of next summer. Likewise, the Marvel panel is always hopping and even though they've only been shooting a few weeks on Iron Man 3, they rarely disappoint and I expect them to show some cool stuff from the movie, much like they did with Captain America two years ago. Oh, and we'll finally get confirmation on that May 2014 movie so we can all stop guessing and making stuff up. Also looking forward to talking to lots of filmmakers/actors since interviewing is my schtick at Comic-Con. » The ScreenCrush.com team is excited to see footage from 'Man of Steel' and 'Iron Man 3' for sure, but the one panel we won't miss is for 'Django Unchained.' Watching Quentin Tarantino work the Hall H crowd will be worth the price of admission alone! And maybe he'll bring some special guests along with him... » Alex Billington also returns to cover Comic-Con 2012 at FirstShowing.net. Alex is looking forward to the panels on Saturday the most, specifically Warner Bros' panel for The Hobbit and Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. There's also Quentin Tarantino bringing Django Unchained on Saturday, which should be very fun. He's mostly excited to see how the Hall H crowds react to these presentations, and hear the responses after. » This year, the Film School Rejects will be hiding in the bathroom stalls so that we can be the first in Hall H to check out everything from Frankenweenie to the Batmobile. We'll be ironically wearing Team Bella t-shirts (except for Brian) as we bring news from Jackie Chan's production company, ParaNorman, Disney, Game of Thrones, Disney's Game of Thrones and the science fiction of Total Recall and Looper. While Fure rubs his own chest to the Expendables 2 footage (and reports back), Brian will be writing about his experiences as a first-timer, and we'll collectively make sure that you, dear reader, feel like you are at the Con yourself. Dressing up like your favorite comic book character is on you though. We can't be held responsible for clothing you. » Don Kaye, lead writer at MSN's Parallel Universe, is split between two things that he wants to see the most: "On the one hand, I am really looking forward to the Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures panel, because I can't wait to get a first look at footage from Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim and Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. Both have been shrouded in mystery until now. We're apparently also going to get a peek at Legendary's take on Godzilla. But at the same time, I am super-excited about seeing the Sony presentation on Elysium. I loved District 9 and can't wait to see what Neill Blomkamp has done for his follow-up. If anyone can come up with the big sci-fi movie with big ideas (the one we didn't get this year), it might be him." » This year the gang at Movies.com is planning to load up their Comic-Con page with as many interviews, panel reports, footage reviews, podcasts, and, most importantly, costume galleries as biologically possible. It'll be like you're at comic-con, minus the huge crowds and Slave Leia dance contests. » Matt Goldberg is going to be at Comic-Con covering Hall H for Collider.com. "I'm jazzed to see Django Unchained and Iron Man 3, but not so much because of the footage since that will all be released in due time. I'm more excited to see Quentin Tarantino and Robert Downey Jr. since big personalities on the Hall H stage always makes for a good time," he says. He adds he's "also eager to see what surprises various presentations may have in store." What are you looking forward to at Comic-Con this year? Forbes has put out their annual list of the highest paid actors in Hollywood and, considering the year he's had, it's unsurprising that Cruise is on top. Between the great success of "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" and his recent paycheck for Joseph Kosinski's "Oblivion," Cruise made a whopping $75 million over the past 12 months. That puts him far ahead of the rest of the pack. Leonardo DiCaprio and Adam Sandler tied for second place, each making $37 million this past year. DiCaprio managed to eek out quite a few dollars for his upcoming film slate, which includes "The Great Gatsby," "Django Unchained" and "The Wolf of Wall Street." Meanwhile, Sandler released quite a few critical flops that were box office successes like "Jack and Jill" and "Grown Ups," and can still walk away from this and call it a successful year. Rounding out the top five are Dwayne Johnson with a well-deserved $36 million and Ben Stiller with $33 million. Johnson helped boost the box office intakes of established franchises like "The Fast and the Furious" and "Journey to the Center of the Earth," and is front-and-center in the new "G.I. Joe" movie. Meanwhile, Stiller continues to make the big bucks from his cash cow series' like "Meet the Parents" and "Madagascar," as well as new films like "Tower Heist" and "The Watch." Finishing up the list are Sacha Baron Cohen, Johnny Depp and Will Smith with $30 million a piece, Mark Wahlberg with $27 million and Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson with $26.5 million. 9. Frank Ocean's friends and family seem to be nothing but supportive of his decision to share details about his sexuality. This week Ocean posted an intimate letter on his Tumblr account, revealing a relationship he had with a man at the age of 19 and so far, his Odd Future cohort Tyler, The Creator has expressed that he's 'proud' of his 'big brother,' and Ocean's mother says the same. Katonya Breaux Riley took to Twitter to thank fans for their support, adding that her son is an' incredible human.' @katonya "My son is brave and honest and i am very proud of him. I wish more people in the world could be brave enough to be who they really are," she wrote. "Thank you to all who have shown love and support," she wrote. "My son is the most incredible human I know. Honest, true and loving. We appreciate you! " Odd Future frontman Tyler, the Creator, was one of the first to show public support after Ocean published the note on Tumblr. "My big brother finally f---ing did that," Tyler tweeted on Wednesday. "Proud of that n---a cause I know that sh-- is difficult or whatever. Anyway. I'm a toilet." 10. "Your mother and I are about to be taken." Those are likely the last words that Kim Mills (Maggie Grace) ever wanted to hear again, but they're the ones we've been desperate for ever since "Taken" hit theaters in 2008. Now Liam Neeson is back for more as Bryan Mills, and this time he's the one who's getting kidnapped. A new international trailer for "Taken 2" has hit the web (via ComingSoon.net), and has got us counting down the days until October 5. What's interesting about "Taken 2" is the fact that it's premise makes a lot of sense for the film franchise, and that it's villains are justified. Bryan killed a whole lot of people in "Taken," so it makes sense that their families would want revenge the same way he did in the first film. Granted, those men he killed ran prostitution rings and sold women like cattle, but they were still people (we guess). The marketing campaign for "Taken 2" is very self-aware and that seems like it will bode well for the finished product. Neeson elevates this film to being so much cooler than it would be otherwise, and everything we've seen for this movie has played off that idea. We love the opening sequence with the happy, family-oriented music that quickly shifts to a more foreboding score. This is not your typical family vacation movie. In fact, "Taken 2" could make you never want to leave the country again. "Taken 2" spins the franchise's premise on its head when its up to Kim to help her father and mother escape from the Albanian kidnappers who captured them. And of course those criminals are sort of right to seek revenge, as they're the parents of the many men Bryan Mills brutally murdered for kidnapping his daughter in the first "Taken." It seems as though much car-flipping, gun-shooting and building-jumping will ensue. Are you looking forward to "Taken 2" as much as we are? There's a star-studded cast, lots of drugs, lots of blood, lots of violence. In the week leading up to the film's release, we've already covered some of the film's serious subjects, like the stars' thoughts on the film's gratuitous violence and equal opportunity nudity, as well as the leading ladies' argument for why their characters are both motivated by love, not war. The results were entertaining, to say the least. Here's a list of our questions, followed by the guys' responses and the correct answer, where needed. Question 1: His nickname was The "Macho Man" Kitsch jumped in right away with the right answer for this one: "Randy Savage!" he said, with both Johnson and Travolta looking puzzled. Question 2: This is a pop music duo from Australia whose hits included “Truly, Madly, Deeply” and “I Want You” (My not-so-softly whispered hint to the guys, since they were stumped: "'Savage' is in every answer," which was met with playful sarcasm. "Oh I got that," Kitsch said sarcastically. "Thanks for that." Answer: Savage Garden "Savage Garden! That’s what I was gonna say," Travolta said, with a reaction that indicated the answer might have been on the tip of his tongue. Question 3: He got his start on "The Wonder Years," and is now a director of TV shows Kitsch and Travolta both nailed this one: "Fred Savage!" (We can give Johnson a pass on this one, since he's a Brit and young-ish, so there's a good chance he's been blissfully unaware of all of these "Savages" until now) Question 4: This last one is a wildcard; this company is the #1 biggest non-government sanctioned arms dealer in the nation. (This really was a random one, but Johnson gets points for offering up the word “savage.”) Answer: Savage Arms "We didn’t do well at all," Travolta said. "Well, [we got] 50%," Kitsch pointed out. "We passed." What did you think of the "Know Your Savages" quiz? 18. Last month, adult studio Corbin Fisher (through owners Liberty Media) sued the operators of file-hosting service Oron for a cool $34.8 million, claiming that they induce the sharing of copyright infringing files via their service. The rhetoric in court filings has been harsh, with Liberty Media’s lawyer Marc Randazza openly referring to Oron as ‘criminals’ who do not quality for safe harbor under the DMCA. After having their funds in the US frozen, Oron unsuccessfully tried to have several hundred thousand dollars released, ostensibly to pay for their legal battles and hosting. A judge agreed to release $100,000 but no more, leading Liberty Media to warn Oron users that the file-hoster could collapse. But for all the rhetoric and public aggression, more considered discussions were going on behind the scenes last month. It is already a matter of record that Liberty Media asked Oron for $500,000 to settle the case and that Oron rejected the amount as “unreasonable”. But the negotiations between the two companies went much further than straightforward cash offers – much, much further. TorrentFreak has learned that on June 23rd Oron offered Liberty Media $50,000, some ten times less than was originally demanded. In addition, Oron said that should an agreement be reached it could become particularly helpful towards the adult studio. After a request from Liberty, Oron said it could indeed take “both strong and bold measures to keep Liberty Media content off of its servers” by giving Liberty direct and “unfettered” deletion access to its systems. Then, in order to generate revenue, removed copyright-infringing content could be substituted for links pointing to locations where people could buy official product from Liberty instead. “Oron will receive no income from such links until Liberty has recouped gross income of $400,000 after which Liberty shall pay to Oron 50% of its profits from said links,” Oron suggested. There is nothing particularly surprising in the above since similar systems are operated at other file-hosting sites. But this is where things begin to escalate. Oron also offered to “permanently ban, by email address, PayPal account, IP address or any other reasonable and robust metric, any user who is the subject of even a single Liberty Media takedown notice.” Any user flagged as infringing Liberty’s copyrights would also have their payments frozen by Oron. Then, in a wakeup call to anyone who thinks that cyberlockers offer almost bulletproof security, at Liberty Media’s request Oron confirmed that should a settlement deal be reached, the company could offer the following: Oron will assist Liberty in identification and civil prosecution of any parties who have been using Oron to distribute Liberty’s copyrighted material, including but not be limited to, full disclosure of IP addresses, banking information, emails and any other information that may assist in Liberty in such prosecution. Finally, and to wrap the whole deal up in a neat bow, Oron accepted Liberty Media’s offer to provide “some public relations help for Oron in order to minimize the chance of other lawsuits being brought against it” by stating, contrary to earlier assertions, that Oron does deserve safe harbor under the DMCA after all. Liberty Media’s offer was dated June 22 and Oron’s counter offer was dated June 23 with a June 25 deadline. General agreement was evident on all major issues except the cash offer. Whether their differences on that point will kill the whole deal remains to be seen. 20. By Rob Markman Kanye West and his G.O.O.D. Music team are currently gearing up to release their compilation album Cruel Summer, but fans of the enigmatic rapper/producer can be excited to know that 'Ye's sixth solo album is due shortly after his label project. "He's coming right after that," Def Jam VP and multiplatinum Chicago producer No I.D. revealed to MTV News on the red carpet for the ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Music Awards in Los Angeles on June 29. No I.D., who produced Common's 1994 classic "Resurrection" as well as more recent hits for Jay-Z ("Run This Town") and Big Sean ("My Last"), has been a longtime friend of Kanye's, and though he isn't working on Cruel Summer, we can look for his name in the production credits of 'Ye's next solo shot. "I'm not working on that [Cruel Summer] album, I'm working on his album," he said before cryptically telling us what's to come on the upcoming G.O.O.D. LP. "This is Kanye. You know what to expect from the family. He hasn't missed yet, so don't expect him to miss." Hard to believe now, but there was a time when the expectations for a Kanye West album weren't very high. Originally, the brass at Roc-A-Fella Records figured that even if their star producer failed as a rapper on his 2004 debut, The College Dropout, they could just overload the release with a ton of features from the label's star artists like Jay-Z, Cam'ron and Beanie Sigel. Now, after dropping LPs like the Grammy-winning Late Registration and 2010's critical darling My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, the expectations for a Yeezy album are perhaps higher than any other artist out today. But No I.D. is confident the rap star will once again deliver. "It's what you expect and everything you don't expect," he said. 21. By Rob Markman Frank Ocean's peers and members of the hip-hop community have already shown their support for the Odd Future singer since he opened up about his sexuality this week, and the general public seems to share the same sentiments. If any Frank Ocean fans are bothered by the Odd Future singer's sexual revelation, they weren't milling around MTV News' Times Square offices Thursday afternoon (July 5). "I'm not going to hate 'Novacane' because he's gay," 20-year-old Jonathan Johnson said. "I personally have no problem with gay people at all. It's brave that he actually came out." Ocean actually didn't declare himself homosexual or bisexual. On Wednesday, the singer/songwriter hit Tumblr, posting a passage intended for the liner notes of his upcoming major-label debut, Channel Orange. In the writing, he reveals that his first love was a young man he met "4 summers ago" when he was 19 years old. Ocean also wrote about the women he has been with in his life, but didn't clearly specify his current relationship status. Regardless, Ocean's message has sparked lots of conversation throughout the music world, particularly in the hip-hop community, where he shares his closest ties. "It's not the norm for that industry, but I think that it's something that can be accepted just because it is him expressing his own individuality," Rachel Schwarts told MTV News. Hip-hop has never had a notable openly gay or bisexual male, so this is new territory. Ocean made his first mark with his 2011 mixtape, Nostalgia, Ultra, and has since gone on to collaborate with the likes of Jay-Z, Kanye West, Beyoncé and most recently André 3000 for his upcoming album. "I don't think Jay-Z and Kanye and those kind of people are going to react to him coming out of the closet, but I think maybe some of the more subculture hip-hop kind of guys will maybe react a bit more," Peter Larsen predicted. Already, a number of musicians have spoken out in support of Frank, including Solange Knowles and Ocean's Odd Future groupmate Tyler, the Creator. So far, we haven't seen any notable negative backlash toward the "American Wedding" singer — could it be that the hip-hop community isn't as hung up on sexuality as is often speculated? "I think that people really aren't that closed off to it, and if they like his music, then they're going to like him," Katie Schwartz explained. "They're not going to let that affect how they feel about his music." Dorian Noble ultimately believes that Frank Ocean's revelation will spur meaningful dialogue and understanding. "I think sexuality is sexuality," he said. "I think the hip-hop community hasn't had the chance or the voice for someone to come out and say it, and I think he's going to open up Pandora's box, and it will definitely come out in the community for sure." 22. Two months ago millions of Indians were shaken up by a mass anti-piracy action. Internet providers all across the country blocked access to major BitTorrent sites such as The Pirate Bay and Torrentz.eu after a local court issued a so-called John Doe order. The order wasn’t targeted at a specific site or ISP but gave the copyright holder carte blanche to demand broad blockades, which they did. In response, Internet providers, government websites and media companies were targeted in DDoS attack reprisals by “Anonymous” groups. The blockades were eventually lifted with the Madras High Court ruling that Internet providers can no longer be asked to ban entire sites. With that, millions of Indians were able to access their favorite sites again. In future, copyright holders will have to specify the exact URLs where their content is being made available. This is where the Indian anti-piracy group Copyright Labs comes in again. The group, who previously demanded site-wide blocks, switched to contacting owners of file-sharing sites with the request to remove specific URLs. However, a certain “Anonymous” group took exception to this new strategy and let this be known in an unusual way. Earlier this week the owner of BitSnoop, one of the largest BitTorrent sites on the Internet, received more than a dozen emails from Copyright Labs. The emails in question (see screenshot at the bottom of this article) did not include the usual links, but a special message from “Anonymous.” Here’s an excerpt taken from one of the the emails: … The URLs where our copyrighted material is located include: Kudos to SFLC for following it up and trying to find out how the HC order was misused by ISPs and CopyrightLabs We are Anonymous you should have expected us GTFO best of luck sorting thousands of mails Get a life Nobody watches those fucking movies anyway they are flop You are hated all over the internet With enough soap you can blow just about anything You are requested to remove this infringing material from your website immediately and not copy it and not make it available to other websites or viewers. … Somehow, the person who gained access to the Copyright Labs web server managed to replace the takedown URLs with their message. Using the Anonymous handle the hacker(s) point out that they disapprove of Copyright Labs’ anti-piracy efforts. This message was sent in hundreds, if not thousands of emails to various website owners. Needless to say, BitSnoop’s owner wasn’t pleased with the bogus takedown emails, and he sent the following reply to Copyright Labs. Hello, Your email is blacklisted, don’t bother sending any more. We don’t care if you were hacked or whatever – not our job to read this crap. This left the Indian anti-piracy group with no other option than to apologize. In their reply the anti-piracy group asks for forgiveness while noting that the BitTorrent site has always been very helpful. Dear Sir, Our apologies for the confusion caused. Our system was hacked. BitSnoop has been great support to us always with speedy responses. We request u to kindly accept our apologies and support us as always. Best Regards HARISH RAM L H CEO Copyright Labs It’s interesting to see that Copyright Labs is so fond of BitSnoop, because a letter obtained by the Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC) clearly shows that the group demanded the site to be taken down in April, along with 271 other sites. How much damage Anonymous has done to Copyright Labs’ server is unknown, but its website has been unreachable for days. At the time of publication the Copyright Labs site is still displaying a “down for maintenance” notice.
