1. February this year, Sweden’s Supreme Court announced its decision not to grant leave to appeal in the long-running criminal case against the founders of The Pirate Bay. This meant that the previously determined sentences handed out to Peter Sunde, Fredrik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm and Carl Lundström will stand. Part of the sentence are damages that have to be paid to various entertainment industry companies. EMI Music, Universal Music, Sony Music and other labels, for example, were awarded around €550,000 to compensate artists and rightsholders for the losses they suffered. During the trial the court carefully weighed all the individual albums that were brought in as evidence. The resulting damages were eventually based on the fees The Pirate Bay would have paid if they had bought licenses for that content. The music labels were satisfied with this outcome, but have since had trouble collecting the damages. TorrentFreak got a peek at an unpublished document from the legal department of anti-piracy outfit IFPI, which documents the issue in more detail. “We have filed applications with Sweden’s Enforcement Agency to secure assets to satisfy these funds. So far very little has been recovered as the individuals have no traceable assets in Sweden and the Enforcement Agency has no powers to investigate outside Sweden. There seems little realistic prospect of recovering funds,” the document reads. While it may come as no surprise that the music industry has a hard time getting money from The Pirate Bay defendants, what comes next may raise a few eyebrows. “There is an agreement that any recovered funds will be paid to IFPI Sweden and IFPI London for use in future anti-piracy activities,” IFPI writes. In other words, the money that the Court awarded to compensate artists and rightsholders for their losses is not going to the artists at all. Instead, the labels will simply hand it over to IFPI for their ongoing anti-piracy efforts, which we documented in detail earlier this week. According to former Pirate Bay spokesman Peter Sunde, one of the people convicted in the case, this shows who the real “thieves” are. “Regarding the issue that they’ve already divvied up the loot, it’s always fun to see that they call it ‘recovered money’ (i.e. money they’ve lost) but that they’re not going to give the artists in question any of it,” Sunde told TorrentFreak. “They say that people who download give money to thieves – but if someone actually ends up paying (in this case: three individuals) then it’s been paid for. So who’s the thief when they don’t give the money to the artists?” According to Sunde the news doesn’t come as a surprise. “As far as I know, no money ever won in a lawsuit by IFPI or the RIAA has even gone to any actual artist,” Sunde says. “It’s more likely the money will be spent on cocaine than the artists that they’re ‘defending’.” This is not the first time that artists have been left out when damages have been awarded in a copyright infringement case. The RIAA previously told TorrentFreak that the ‘damages’ accrued from piracy-related lawsuits will not go to any of the artists, but towards funding more anti-piracy campaigns. “Any funds recouped are re-invested into our ongoing education and anti-piracy programs,” we heard. 11. The Opening Ceremonies of the London Olympics were a spectacular affair, and throughout the night there were more than a few nods to the UK's pop culture resume. Especially the music. There were plenty of acrobats and athletes around plus performers like Dizzee Rascal who helped paying tribute to 1960s British music. His Olympics theme song "Scream" was a winner, and last night after delivering his hit "Bonkers," the soundtrack ran the gamut from The Rolling Stones to David Bowie. MTV News' full-recap of the Opening Ceremony: By James Montgomery Costing a reported $42 million (less than half of the grand ceremony that kicked off the Beijing games in 2008), the Opening Ceremony of the London games featured more than 10,000 athletes — and nearly as many performers. But music played an important role throughout, scoring the entrances of each nation and, in one segment of the production, taking center stage as an army of dancers worked their way through a routine that focused squarely on the nation's greatest export: classic songs like "My Generation," "Satisfaction" and newer contributions like "Born Slippy," "Valerie" and "Song Two." Aside from the music, the centerpiece of the Ceremony was an English pastoral transported directly into the center of Olympic Stadium. It featured actual grassy meadows, a water mill, livestock and even a cottage with a smoking chimney. Each nation — 204 in all — planted its flag on the gently sloping hill, and after Great Britain's athletes did their victory lap, the Arctic Monkeys roared onto the stage to blast through their hit "I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor" as fireworks blasted overhead. Then, as cyclists dressed as doves (a nod to one of the oldest Olympic traditions) rode into view, the Monkeys turned in a reverent version of the Beatles' "Come Together," frontman Alex Turner looking very much like a young John Lennon in his Teddy Boy phase with his slicked back pompadour. Then, after the Queen officially declared the games of the 30th Olympiad open, the Olympic torch was brought into the stadium by Britain's most decorated athlete, Sir Steven Redgrave (who received it from soccer star David Beckham), completing the flame's 12,800-mile voyage. As a new generation of British athletes lit the Olympic cauldron, the strains of Pink Floyd's "Eclipse" boomed overhead. Then, the elaborate, hours-long ceremony was closed by (who else?) Sir Paul McCartney, who played the refrain of "The End," then launched into one of the Beatles' most famous tunes — "Hey Jude" — leading the packed stadium (and, one can assume, the billions watching around the world) in its iconic "na-na-na" chorus. And with that, the ceremony reached its appropriate conclusion, having honored the spirit of the Olympics and the great musical tradition of the host nation. Let the games begin. 13. By Rob Markman Mobb Deep said it was all about the survival of the fittest, but right now it is unclear if the the veteran rap group can survive their current drama. Havoc and Prodigy appeared to be all good, that was until Havoc stood by his April tweets which alleged that Pee was a homosexual. "The tweets is crazy," he told AllHipHop.com Friday, before confirming that he sent all of the original messages on April 9. "And I was speaking of a standpoint of being mad, but still being truthful of how I felt — but it was just the wrong thing to do at that time." Things began to sour between the groupmates in April when Havoc took to Twitter and made serious allegations about Prodigy's sexuality, even strangely congratulating Pee and Rihanna on their engagement, which, of course, never happened. "Congrats to P @prodigymobbdeep and @rihanna for getting married soon!! @rihanna please confirm," Havoc wrote, setting off a barrage of early-morning tweets. "Prodigy abitch and I'm gonna show it, follow!! Ground breaking new," Hav wrote soon after. Each tweet got progressively more inflammatory. Havoc then charged that his childhood friend, with whom he has recorded seven full-length albums, was involved in a homosexual relationship during his three-year jail bid. "I got n---as in the jail system to back up that prodigy was f---ing homes in jail," he wrote. "Now i will silence... and let the jails take care of the rest." Hav went on to write about a fist -fight that he and Prodigy had, writing that he "had to smack P." A few days later, Havoc released a statement claiming that his phone was stolen and denying that he had sent any of the tweets, nor that he had any beef with his partner-in-rhyme. During a May interview on MTV News' "RapFix Live," Pee also debunked the break-up rumors. "If [Havoc] had a problem, he would've told me that, he wouldn't put it on Twitter," he said, adding that the duo would soon be releasing a new album. Well, on Friday, Havoc was singing a different tune. "Right now, Mobb Deep is on hiatus, indefinitely ... until things get hashed out," he told the site. 17. Usher's stepson Kile Glover was buried in Atlanta on Friday (July 27). Family and friends gathered privately in Atlanta on Friday (July 27) to lay to rest young Kile Glover, Usher Raymond's 11-year old stepson, who died from injuries suffered in a tragic Jet Ski accident earlier this month. Glover was the son of Usher's ex-wife, Tameka Foster, and Atlanta TV executive Ryan Glover. He was struck by a Jet Ski while floating in an inner tube on Atlanta's Lake Lanier on July 6. There was no fanfare outside the Wieuca Road Baptist Church on Peachtree Road where the funeral was held, but inside, the Glover, Foster and Raymond families received tremendous amounts of support from many esteemed members of Atlanta's music and political communities. Ludacris, Jazze Pha and Phaedra Parks from "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" were just some of the celebrities in attendance. The hour-long service began at 11 a.m. Young Kile was airlifted to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, where doctors subsequently pronounced him brain-dead. "We know God's in control, and are leaning on our faith in Him and His word at this most difficult time," the family told CNN in a statement. "We firmly believe in the power of prayer and ask that you all continue to pray and lift Kile up, as it's the best way we can all support him now." Glover passed away on July 21 after being removed from life support. Atlanta radio personality and Cash Money record artist DJ Greg Street sent out a tweet immediately after hearing the news of Glover's death, expressing his support for the family. "Lil RG is an Angel now, Ryan, Tameka, Usher & the whole Glover Family we gotta make him proud," he wrote. The man driving the Jet Ski has been identified as 38-year-old Jeffrey S. Hubbard, a friend of the family. Police have determined that no drugs were involved in the accident, and Hubbard has not been charged with a crime. No word on whether or not he attended the funeral. Leave your condolences for the Foster, Glover and Raymond families in the comments below. 23. This week in theaters, there are aliens in the neighborhood, an imaginary girl in real life, and something wrong with the fried chicken. Check out all of this week's pairings in Double Feature Friday! "The Watch" & "Attack the Block" Some of the television ads for "The Watch" have downplayed the science fiction elements of the comedy, but one look at the full synopsis for this alien invasion flick and memories of last year's instant cult classic "Attack the Block" should come rushing back. Joe Cornish's original "aliens in the neighborhood" film boasts genuine laughs, scares and enough gore to satiate the more hardcore horror fans. It was the kind of the movie that was so original and so clearly well-made that it compelled you to anticipate whatever comes next from the filmmaker. Definitely check it out instead. "Step Up Revolution" & "Scarface" Listen, I understand that using dance as a way to call attention to the gaps between the classes and bring about permanent social change in Miami might be the P.C. way to address the climate of today, but back in the 80s, all you needed was a lot of cocaine and some balls. The release of the fourth "Step Up" movie calls for a look back on the real Miami revolution, which occurred back in 1983, was directed by Brian De Palma, and starred Al Pacino. "Ruby Sparks" & "Little Miss Sunshine" After six years away, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris are back in the director's chair with their latest heart-warming offering "Ruby Sparks." Their first feature film, "Little Miss Sunshine," earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture, won for Best Original Screenplay, and started the trend of calling every year's indie-Academy crossover "This year's 'Little Miss Sunshine.'" It's likely that you haven't gone back to this film in a while, but it holds up and is worth the revisit. "Killer Joe" & "The French Connection" William Friedkin makes hard movies. This is the guy behind "The Exorcist" and "The French Connection." His latest film, "Killer Joe" continues that tradition with some serious gross-outs, so why not go back and see where he came from with the movie that won him an Academy Award for Best Director. Gene Hackman is in rare form in this hard-nosed 1971 crime drama about drug smuggling in New York City. Hackman plays Popeye Doyle, and once you see "The French Connection," you won't forget it.
