Well...being on in the draftable age group I (and most peeps around here with me) believe it is BS scare tactics

IMO the military as a whole is kicking ass and there are plenty of volunteers (half my graduating HS class is either in an academy or enlisted...no shortage of peeps) and also tons of people (suprising to me) at ASU are making the military a career for either medical, engineering, or just straight up ROTC. So I don't belive for a second the bleak outlook everyone is saying about our military.

If that's the case, why is it that we've never had enough troops in Iraq to be able to control the violence? And why is it that the National Guard is pulling so much duty?

The fact that former National Guard men and women who are in their 30's and 40's (even 50's in rare cases) are being called back into service and deployed to Iraq speaks volumes about the lack of available troops. If we had the troops, they'd be in Iraq trying to make it safer for our own soldiers as well as the civilians in Iraq, who are taking a beating http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGB2QUGBV0E.html

Can Bush keep his no-draft promise?

And don't forget the horrific numbers of people being told their tours are being arbitrarily extended because the gov't has nobody to replace them with.

More bodies are needed. It's time to draft everyone with a gun.

I think you could double the number of troops in Iraq and still have problems...control the violence?? I think there would be an insurgent problem no matter how many troops you throw in there

I agree.

It was the Republicans that got rid of the draft before. It is only the Democrats that are talking about having one now. Don't bother to ask Kerry. He would change his mind 3 times before you read his answer anyhow.

It was a Republican, George W. Bush, who instigated the back door draft being used right now.

You kids play nice.

The election is a few days away. Then we can hopefully knock this down to a dull roar.

A kid I'm not. Nor am I immature enough to post a joke link in more than one thread simply because I don't like the content of that thread. That's why I deleted the other link in another thread, especially since it didn't have the introduction indicating it was a joke.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
