Happy New Year - 2004

I'm still savoring a few toasts on New Year's Eve here in California to finish off 2003 and thought I'd bring you an update from around the world:

I think these folks having been watching David Letterman for too long:

"South African police will crack down hard on anybody throwing old fridges from high-rise buildings during the New Year's holiday, they say. Police and soldiers are on patrol in Johannesburg's notorious Hillbrow suburb, famous for the practice. Throwing heavy objects from balconies and firing guns have become something of a bad "New Year's institution," said police Inspector Kriben Naidoo."

And I think these folks are out of hand, too:

MANILA : At least 22 people were killed and some 500 others injured as the Philippines ushered in the New Year with raucous celebrations that sparked fires, shootings and accidents.

And with that, play safe and have a Happy New Years Day and a prosperous 2004!!!!

I guess if you don't have electricity you could just throw it out the window. It seems much easier than carrying it down several flights of stairs.

We should probably do a stand up comic act - Red & Blue - we'd probably make more money than we do in aeronautics and movies. You can play Gracie and I will play George

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
