The Look On Your Math Teachers Face

The animation makes it difficult to see what is going on, if you look at this pic of the second diagram it helps you to see it better.

Basically, the diagram is not a true rectangle, you can see this by calculating the gradient of the long diagonal.

If you count horizontally from the bottom right hand corner, along the bottom until you come to the join: this is 8 squares. Then count up from there to the next join ; 3 squares, which gives a gradient of 3/8. Now count from there along to the edge which is 5 squares. From there up to the top is 2 squares. So the gradient of the long diagonal is 2/5. So the long diagonal has two different gradients. But a straight line only has one gradient, so the long diagonal is not a straight line. Problem solved.

i was just demonstrating that the part of the long diagonal from the bottom left hand corner to the square dot directly under the 8 has a gradient of 3/8. Also the part of the long diagonal from the dot under the 8 to the top right hand corner has a gradient of 2/5. It is a simple fact of maths that a straight line only has one gradient. The long diagonal has two different gradients so it is not a straight line.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
