Les Paul To Celebrate 89th Birthday in June 2004-05-12 11:59:26

If you plan on attending Les Paul's June 7 gig at the Iridium, remember to bring a present. This spring, the legendary guitar inventor will celebrate his 89th birthday with two guest-laden shows at the popular New York jazz joint, affirming his status as one of the city's most prolific performers.

Best known as the father of the full-bodied electric guitar, Paul has played thousands of concerts since the 1930s, performing with the likes of Bing Crosby, the Staples Sisters and, more recently, Derek Trucks. Described by some as "a mad-scientist," Paul also had a hand in the development of the bass guitar, guitar reverb and guitar echo, influencing a generation of electric players. Since 1995, Paul has led a weekly stand at the pristine Iridium jazz club, despite his struggle with arthritis. Paul McCartney, Keith Richards, Tony Bennett, Steve Miller and Slash are some of the musicians who have stopped by to jam.

Though Paul's actual 89th birthday is June 9, the guitarist will celebrate on June 7 with performances at both 8PM and 10PM. Paul will also receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Jazz Journalist Association's annual Jazz Awards. For a detailed interview with Paul, be sure to pick up the June issue of Relix .

But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
