GWI’s Premium Speed DSL Service Undercuts Cable Competitors’ Prices

BIDDEFORD, Maine, April 21, 2004 — Great Works Internet (GWI), the largest local Internet service provider (ISP) in Northern New England, has installed its fiber optic network and industry-leading Stinger® DSL equipment from Lucent Technologies in communities throughout southern, central, and seacoast New Hampshire. Up to now, much of New Hampshire has been underserved and held captive to single suppliers of high-cost high-speed service. GWI is altering the speed-cost equation by offering an affordable high-performance alternative to existing ISPs. The 10-year old Maine-based company is challenging the Internet speed ceiling with dramatic numbers, capable of handling downloads and uploads of up to double current cable modem speeds.

I hope they do well. Im looking for a reason to dump Comcast...

Yeah, I know.

If I had any kind of decent DSL (or other cable) options in my area I would heavily consider dumping Comcast.

Not that there's anything fundamentally wrong with Comcast, but the price is a bit steep for me ($57.50 a month) and the upstream speed sucks (256k up).

Its reliable if nothing else. ;)

Wow, 8 megabits... and for almost the same price I pay for my 1.5!

Chilling how these companies rip us off and claim to be more "reasonable" than the competition.

      You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention. 
      But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
