School Board Upholds Girl's Expulsion for Possessing "Advil" at School

The Bossier Parish School Board voted unanimously Thursday night to uphold the one-year expulsion of a high school student who brought an over-the-counter pain reliever to school.  The girl will be allowed to attend the district's alternative school during the one-year period.   She has now enrolled in that school.

The girl was expelled earlier this week after administrators at Parkway High School found 'Advil' in the tenth grade student's purse.   Superintendent Ken Kruithof says the one-year expulsion is required for any student in the sixth grade or above found in possession of any type of pill.   Kruithof says the rule is clearly spelled out in the district's rule book.   "What we try to do is make sure kids and parents have good information," Kruithof said.  "Life is made up of choices and sometimes we choose wisely and sometimes we choose not so wise," Kruithof added.

The student, Amanda Stiles, says she doesn't believe the punishment is just.  "We're old enough to know how many we can take without overdosing or being in danger of anything," Stiles said of having Advil on campus.   Her mother, Kelly Herpin, was disappointed by the ruling and says she's still considering whether to take legal action against the district.   "We realize she needed to be punished - she broke a school rule," Herpin said.  "But, I think a one-year expulsion for over-the-counter medication is pretty severe."

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
