Buying a computer

I'm going to be buying a new HP computer in a few days and it looks like they all have Windows Vista on them. What are some good and bad things I need to know about Windows Vista?

as far as i know, everyone here is sticking with windows xp and has had nothing but problems with vista. if i were you, i would get a mac so you you can run all systems...a mini mac is 600 bucks, and all you need is a screen and a keyboard

I wouldn't suggest a mac because everything is so expensive although I think Vista is just not ready yet. They might have to release a service pack like they did with XP.

Since you Koopergeek are an average PC user, Vista is just fine.

Mac is better but if you are used to Windows and just want to keep doing basic stuff, Vista is just fine

Go for it Koop. Since you are at it, get me one as well.

HPs are great computers, Koop - go fer it.

The Wall Street Journal on why people are switching from pc's to macs... and More HERE

That is just all the fanboys talking :p

The reason people are switching to Macs is simple. Macs are more stylish and people prefer style over substance. Just look at the iPhone. My MDA Vario can do everything the iPhone can do and much more. It is also much cheaper. So why did the iPhone get so much coverage for less than the competition when it was launched? Because the iPhone is not a useful tool, it is a fashion accessory, so my phone is not competition. My colleagues, quite rightly, call my phone, "the geek phone".

With the exception of video games, Macs are more media friendly, easier to use, less subject to viruses, but more expensive. And you can run any operating system on a mac--that seems to be a big plus. In the entertainment business, we primarily use macs--in technology, I know PCs still rule the roost.

If you want to have old technology that you can rely on, get yourself a pen and paper.

My movie collection, which numbers in the thousands, is cataloged on 3 X 5 index cards...

it would take forever to enter all that stuff by keyboard, and I don't know how to do spreadsheets.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
