LimeWire Creating DRM-Free Digital Music Store

Recommended Posts

Slyck reports that LimeWire has formally announced the arrival of their digital music store.

The music store will launch sometime this fall, and initially will be separate from the LimeWire client. The plan however, is to eventually integrate the music store website onto the LimeWire client. When that will occur however, it anyone's guess as the digital store concept and implementation is still in its infancy."

Another one sells out.

:thefinger07:

Why is it a sellout to sell music? Indie musicians who arent with the RIAA have to make a living for what they do, too

That's a good point too. Anytime I see a p2p app doing something like that, I tend to think the worst!!

:o

Let's see how it plays out. If they married with the majors, then it won't bode well...

I wonder if they'll be watermarking their tunes as well. From the labels they carry, I doubt it, but you never know.

Well after a bit of research, I see the labels they are gonna carry right now are IRIS and Nettwerk. The Iris 'about' wasn't bad, but the Nettwerk 'about' was great.

Nettwerk Music Group is Canada's leading privately owned record label and artist management company. Nettwerk is responsible for managing some of Canada's biggest artists like Sarah McLachlan, Avril Lavigne, Barenaked Ladies and many others. Nettwerk has several offices located around the world including offices in New York, Los Angeles and London; with our main office right next to Granville Island in Vancouver, B.C.

Litigation is destructive, it must stop .... as per Nettwerk copyrights, we have never sued anybody and all our music is open source to encourage fans to share it with others and help us promote our Artists. As per those Artists we manage on other labels (Majors), we take issue with those labels claiming that litigating our fans is in our interest, as it clearly is not.

Gives me hope for the future. I think I could make a safe bet that Limewire isn't gonna have any watermarking, let alone DRM, for the foreseeable future.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
