Looking for a song about a changing world

Hello,

I am wondering if there are any songs from this era (maybe Ray Charles or similar in style) that are about a changing world (changing technology in particular). I want to use it as theme music for a small school project.

Thanks

How about Chuck Berry - Roll Over Beethoven I think that signfies a changing era for the period. If you have the lattitude, Marvin Gaye's Mercy, Mercy Me (1971), is more dramatic

Pete Seeger - Turn, Turn, Turn Written in the 50s, made popular by the Byrds in the 60s

Words-adapted from the bible, book of ecclesiastes

Music-pete seeger

To everything (turn, turn, turn)

There is a season (turn, turn, turn)

And a time for every purpose, under heaven

A time to be born, a time to die

A time to plant, a time to reap

A time to kill, a time to heal

A time to laugh, a time to weep

To everything (turn, turn, turn)

There is a season (turn, turn, turn)

And a time for every purpose, under heaven

A time to build up,a time to break down

A time to dance, a time to mourn

A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together

To everything (turn, turn, turn)

There is a season (turn, turn, turn)

And a time for every purpose, under heaven

A time of love, a time of hate

A time of war, a time of peace

A time you may embrace, a time to refrain from embracing

To everything (turn, turn, turn)

There is a season (turn, turn, turn)

And a time for every purpose, under heaven

A time to gain, a time to lose

A time to rend, a time to sew

A time to love, a time to hate

A time for peace, I swear its not too late

Pete Seger - If I Had A Hammer (1958) More of a metaphor, than having to do with technology, but it does talk about change

IF I HAD A HAMMER (The Hammer Song)

words and music by Lee Hays and Pete Seeger

If I had a hammer

I'd hammer in the morning

I'd hammer in the evening

All over this land

I'd hammer out danger

I'd hammer out a warning

I'd hammer out love between my brothers and my sisters

All over this land

If I had a bell

I'd ring it in the morning

I'd ring it in the evening

All over this land

I'd ring out danger

I'd ring out a warning

I'd ring out love between my brothers and my sisters

All over this land

If I had a song

I'd sing it in the morning

I'd sing it in the evening

All over this land

I'd sing out danger

I'd sing out a warning

I'd sing out love between my brothers and my sisters

All over this land

Well I've got a hammer

And I've got a bell

And I've got a song to sing

All over this land

It's the hammer of justice

It's the bell of freedom

It's the song about love between my brothers and my sisters

All over this land

mid 50's

Drifters - The World Is Changing (not a lot of lyrics about changing world however and I don't have the lyrics)

Mid 60's

Sonny & Cher - The Beat Goes On

The beat goes on, the beat goes on.

Drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain.

La de da de de, la de da de da.

Charleston was once the rage, uh huh.

History has turned the page, uh huh.

The miniskirt's the current thing, uh huh.

Tennybopper si our newborn king, uh huh.

And the beat goes on, the beat goes on.

Drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain.

La de da de de, la de da de da.

The grocery store's the supermart, uh huh.

Little girls still break their hearts, uh huh.

And men still keep on marching off to war.

Electrically they keep a baseball score.

And the beat goes on, the beat goes on.

Drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain.

La de da de de, la de da de da.

Grandmas sit in chairs and reminisce

Boys keep chasing girls to get a kiss.

The cars keep going faster all the time.

Bums still cry 'Hey buddy, have you got a dime?'

And the beat goes on, the beat goes on.

Drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain.

La de da de de, la de da de da.

From the late 60's

Zager & Evans - In the Year 2525 (rock tune 4sure)

In the year 2525

if man is still alive

if woman can survive

They may find

In the year 3535

Ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lie

Everything you think, do and say

Is in the pill you took today

In the year 4545

You ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes

You won't find a thing to chew

Nobody's gonna look at you

In the year 5555

Your arms hangin' limp at your sides

Your legs got nothin' to do

Some machine's doin' that for you

In the year 6565

You won't need no husband, won't need no wife

You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too

From the bottom of a long glass tube

In the year 7510

If God's a-coming, He oughta make it by then

Maybe He'll look around Himself and say

"Guess it's time for the judgement day"

In the year 8510

God is gonna shake His mighty head

He'll either say "I'm pleased where man has been"

Or tear it down, and start again

In the year 9595

I'm kinda wonderin' if man is gonna be alive

He's taken everything this old earth can give

And he ain't put back nothing

Now it's been ten thousand years

Man has cried a billion tears

For what, he never knew

Now man's reign is through

But through eternal night

The twinkling of starlight

So very far away

Maybe it's only yesterday

Joe South - Don't It Make You Want To Go Home (suitable for background music) Brook Benton also got on the charts barely with a cover of this song. Both versions are great. It just depends on whether you prefer black (Brook Benton) or white (Joe South).

Here are those lyrics:

Oh, the whippoorwill roosts on the telephone pole

And the Georgia sun goes down

Well, it's been a long, long time but I'm glad that I'm

Goin' back to my home town

Goin' down to the Greyhound station

Gonna buy me a one-way fare

And if the good Lord's willin' and the creeks don't rise

By tomorrow, ah, I'm gonna be there

Don't it make you want to go home?

Don't it make you want to go home?

All God's children get weary when they roam

Don't it make you want to go home?

There's a six-lane highway down by the creek

Where I went skinny-dippin' as a child

And a drive-in show where the meadows used to grow

And the strawberries used to grow wild

There's a drag strip down by the riverside

Where my grandma's cow used to graze

Now the grass don't grow and the river don't flow

Like it did in my childhood days

(Don't it make you wanna go home?)

(Don't it make you wanna go home?)

All God's children get weary when they roam

(Don't it make you) wanna, wanna go home?

That's all I can think of that may remotely work. Good Luck.

Going back to the Great Depression era, from the brilliant Cole Porter, Anything Goes

Anything Goes lyrics

Musical "Anything Goes" soundtrack lyrics

lyrics,

Anything Goes lyrics

[RENO]

Times have changed,

And we've often rewound the clock,

Since the Puritans got a shock,

When they landed on Plymouth Rock.

If today,

Any shock they should try to stem,

'Stead of landing on Plymouth Rock,

Plymouth Rock would land on them.

In olden days a glimpse of stocking

Was looked on as something shocking,

But now, God knows,

Anything Goes.

Good authors too who once knew better words,

Now only use four letter words

Writing prose, Anything Goes.

The world has gone mad today

And good's bad today,

And black's white today,

And day's night today,

When most guys today

That women prize today

Are just silly gigolos

And though I'm not a great romancer

I know that I'm bound to answer

When you propose,

Anything goes

When grandmama whose age is eighty

In night clubs is getting matey with gigolo's,

Anything Goes.

When mothers pack and leave poor father

Because they decide they'd rather be tennis pros,

Anything Goes.

If driving fast cars you like,

If low bars you like,

If old hymns you like,

If bare limbs you like,

If Mae West you like

Or me undressed you like,

Why, nobody will oppose!

When every night,

The set that's smart

Is intruding in nudist parties in studios,

Anything Goes.

[RENO, PASSENGERS & CREW]

The world has gone mad today

And good's bad today,

And black's white today,

And day's night today,

When most guys today

That women prize today

Are just silly gigolos

And though I'm not a great romancer

I know that I'm bound to answer

When you propose,

Anything goes

[RENO]

If saying your prayers you like,

If green pears you like

If old chairs you like,

If back stairs you like,

If love affairs you like

With young bears you like,

Why nobody will oppose!

[ALL]

And though I'm not a great romancer

And though I'm not a great romancer

I know that I'm bound to answer

When you propose,

Anything goes...

Anything goes!

Thank you everybody for your help.

Kooperman, "Anything goes" by Cole Porter seems almost the perfect song i am looking for. The lyrics of this song are exactly what i am looking for, especially "the world's gone mad" so thank you.

Redneck4sure, which album is The Drifters - The World is Changing from? I would like to check it out.

Also, i have heard that Zager & Evans song before - the year 2525 - its a very good song.

If anyone else knows any more songs about a changing/changed/different world then please feel free to reply.

  • 6 months later...

Here's an obvious choice we missed...

What A Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong, song written by George Weiss / Bob Thiele.

I see trees of green, red roses too

I see them bloom for me and you

And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

I see skies of blue and clouds of white

The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night

And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

The colours of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky

Are also on the faces of people going by

I see friends shakin' hands, sayin' "How do you do?"

They're really saying "I love you"

I hear babies cryin', I watch them grow

They'll learn much more than I'll ever know

And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

Yes, I think to myself, what a wonderful world

Oh yeah

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
